Former Secretary of State/2016 presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton and former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Gen. Colin Powell will play themselves on "Madam Secretary's" Season 5 premiere, the network announced Tuesday.
In the episode, which was filmed on July 11, Téa Leoni’s Elizabeth McCord seeks her predecessors’ advice about responding to a delicate situation.
“We’re delighted to have these three former secretaries of state be part of our season premiere,” said executive producer Barbara Hall via statement. “It was a privilege to experience their perspectives and discourse both in and behind the scenes.”
Executive producer Lori McCreary added via statement: “Having three powerhouses of diplomacy agree to come on our show is awe-inspiring and humbling. And that we were able to find a time in their busy schedules when they were all available is a miracle… We welcome Secretary Albright, Secretary Clinton and General Powell to the Madam Secretary family!”

Hillary Clinton, secret agent!
When the former secretary of state approached "Madam Secretary" executive producer Lori McCreary about guest-starring on the CBS drama, her first request was to assume a provocative new identity as a spy.
But McCreary had a better idea.
“I said, would you ever play yourself?” McCreary recalls of the conversation she had with Clinton at a birthday party last August for former President Bill Clinton. “And she said, ‘I’d consider it.’ But it was a party, so you think maybe people are just making small talk. So when we confirmed that she really wanted to do it, we were excited.'”
EW has obtained an exclusive first look of Clinton’s much-anticipated trip to the political drama. The former secretary of state, who actually inspired the Téa Leoni drama, is joined on the show by former Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright (who has appeared on the series before).
To incorporate the former secretaries of state, creator/executive producer Barbara Hall penned an episode about nationalism. “There’s an act of violence that is related to that issue, and Elizabeth (Leoni) feels like she needs to make a speech to the country. She feels she needs some help and guidance on how to handle this situation, so she calls them to give her some advice, which is something secretaries of state do. It’s been a protocol, calling each other up.”

Madam Secretary spent nine months on putting former Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell and Madeline Albright in the same room (https://www.thedailybeast.com/hillary-clintons-fall-tv-takeover-inside-her-madam-secretary-and-murphy-brown-gigs)
Executive producer Lori McCreary first broached the idea with Hillary Clinton at Bill Clinton's birthday last year, but the former presidential candidate wanted to play a spy. Then it took time to conceive a story that would be the trio in one room. "The assembly of former secretaries is historic," Kevin Fallon says of Sunday's episode. "It’s reportedly, and understandably, difficult for the trio, who are friends, to even schedule dinner together. And while political cameos are hardly new territory—the Obamas, Bidens, Clintons, and Reagans all constantly appeared in pop culture—it’s certainly an interesting time for Hillary Clinton to rack up so much screen time, as audiences in turn attempt to glean how light-hearted or political she wants to, or should be." He's referring to Clinton's recent appearance on Murphy Brown. McCreary says she didn't realize the history of the shoot until the day of filming. “After all that, when we were shooting, it didn’t hit us what we had just done until we shut the door, when I think it was General Powell who was the last to leave,” she says. “Literally Téa (Leoni) flopped down on her back in her dressing room. That’s how all of us felt. Like, oh my God…”
