It's most likely something that he did while Home Improvement was taking a break from filming.

He actually retired from acting once the show ended in 1999.

I wonder how Taran Noah Smith is doing today? On the E! THS they said his first wife, who was around 15 years older than him, used him and conned him out of all the money he made from Home Improvement. I hope that's not the case, as E! is not a respectful network, so maybe it wasn't true. If it was true, I hope he's doing better now.

He was on Inside Edition back in 2017 helping out the victims of Hurricane Harvey and was on Access just recently a few months ago towards the end of last year with Zachery Ty Bryan talking about Pamela Anderson on the show.
