1.Changes (Pilot)
Scene, Mahoney House
[It’s September 1980 at Eastland. The girls are returning for the New Year, but many things are different. Cindy, Sue Ann, and Molly are sitting on the couch. Nancy runs in]
Nancy: Guys!
Molly: We’re girls! It’s atrocious how important men are to the world!
Sue Ann: Molly, give up the feminist act.
Nancy: Well, girls. I’ve got some news!
All: What?
Nancy: Blair, Natalie, and Tootie…
[Nancy is interrupted by Sue Ann, Cindy, and Molly]
All: Were caught in a bar, and are living over the kitchen.
Nancy: But do you know why they’re living over the kitchen?
All: To help out in the kitchen, to pay off the damages to the school van.
Nancy: You could’ve let me tell, even if you DID know! Well, do you know…
Sue Ann: That we’re getting a new housemother.
Nancy: AND!
Cindy: A new roommate.
Nancy: You guys ruin everything.
Molly: We’re girls!
Nancy: Oh, shut up! Do you know who the new roommate is?
Sue Ann: Of course! Jennifer Calden. She used to live at this house 2 years ago. We have classes together.
Cindy: Yeah, I have GYM with her. She’s a terrible runner!
Molly: Well of course, she smokes! Her and Blair used to combine their money and have someone by cigarettes for them.
Sue Ann: Luckily Mrs. Garrett got Blair to quit. Too bad she won’t be here this year!
Cindy: Yeah.
Nancy: Do you GIRLS know who the new housemother is?
All: No.
Nancy: Great! I guess I’ll tell you then… It’s Ms. Mahoney!
Sue Ann: Ms. Mahoney? She’s the history teacher!
Nancy: Yeah. That means she’ll make sure our homework is done, and she’ll make us study all the time!
Molly: Oh well, I do my homework, Cindy!
Cindy: I do mine too! Sometimes.
[Someone knocks on the door. It’s Ms. Mahoney. Molly answers it]
Molly: Hi, Ms. Mahoney!
Ms. Mahoney: Hello, Molly. I just brought my last suitcase, I’m officially moved in. I’m sure you all know that I’m…
Molly: Our new housemother.
Ms. Mahoney: You guys know your news.
Molly: We’re girls!
Ms. Mahoney: Stop taking things so offensively, Miss Parker. ‘Guys’ is just an expression. Now, I don’t want to hear you talk to me that way again. Go up to your room!
Molly: But!
Ms. Mahoney: Yes, go put that on a chair in your room.
[Molly angrily stomps up the stairs]
Ms. Mahoney: Well girls, you’re lucky I’m your housemother! That means you get your History books early! We’ll be starting on Chapter 1, of course. [She passes out the books] You girls can start reading.
[The girls put the books down, and go on with what they were doing]
Ms. Mahoney: Okay, I’m ordering you to!
[The girls begin reading their History books]
Scene, Mahoney House
[It’s a week after Ms. Mahoney officially moved into the house. The girls are reading their history books]
Cindy: This is stupid! Why do we have to read Chapter 1 every day! School doesn’t even start until next week!
Sue Ann: Jennifer is lucky that she hasn’t come to school yet!
Cindy: Yeah.
[Jennifer Calden walks in]
Jennifer: Hi, everyone.
All: Hi; Hello.
Jennifer: My luggage should be up in my room.
Molly: Yeah, it is. It looks like you brought another one.
Jennifer: Yeah, this is just cig’s and beer.
[Jennifer goes upstairs]
Sue Ann: Great! Now, we have a lousy housemother and a troublemaker housemate! She’ll get us all in trouble, and we’ll end up like Nat, Tootie, and Blair!
