View Full Version : Why did Bebe leave?!

Well I thought I knew the answer to this for years now, but at the end of "The Bar Manager, the Shrink, His Wife, and Her Lover", Frasier takes Lilith back!

This is what I thought it had been till I recently saw that episode:

Bebe left the show cause she wanted to devote more time to Broadway.

Is that really the case? I mean, there were only 8 more shows after Lilith's last appearance! Did the show's creators and Bebe know that the show was endin'? If so, why couldn't she just stick it out to the end? Did the end of "Cheers" come suddenly?

And, let's not forget, WHEN DID FRASIER AND LILITH DIVORCE?! All this time I thought they split up during that last season of the show...agh!

Bebe did leave the show cause she wanted to devote more time to Broadway. But, she agreed to come back for more guest appearences once in a while. Maybe she thought that Cheers would go longer after 11 seasons and come back again in the 12th. When Ted Danson said season 11 would be his last, I think that they just decided that they weren't gonna do it because the series was done. Any Help?

I think it all boils down to the writers wanting to explain to the fans why Lillith was no longer showing up at the bar. She became too important of a character for her to just be written off as staying home with Fredrick or something lame like that. They wanted her to go out with a bang. Cheers also didn't want to kill her off just in case she could make a guest shot here and there. I don't think she returned because she found out the show was ending(That was announced at beginning of the year) Since the show was ending, the writers just asked Bebe to return one more time to end things on a happy note for Frasier.

How was she "no longer showing up at the bar"? I thought that Lilith was a pretty much on again/off again character, but maybe there was a noticeable absence in the end of Season 10 or somethin' I wasn't aware of...hmmm...

Lillith definitely became a regular character after awhile and even if they didn't have to much for her to do, she still showed up to say a classic line or two. What I meant is that when Bebe finally made the decision to leave the show, the writers wanted to give fans an explanation as to why she was no longer around.(Rather than not mention it at all or just give excuses like she was at some science seminar or watching Freddie.)

She was always a recurring character UNTIL season 10. Then, she became a leading character, having her name credited in the opening. They couldn't just go back to having her a recurring character after making her a leading character, without a good storyline. Like it was said earlier, WHO would believe after years of her spending so much time in the bar, that she miraculously had to stop coming to spend more time with her son. Apparently, Bebe wanted back in NY to do shows (all the more power to her!) so they HAD to make her a recurring character. There's problems with Frasier/Lilith, she's gone for a good few months, she comes back for two episodes just to leave Frasier/Lilith fans happy for the series end. Then, I guess it's just understood, Lilith is spending more time at work and with Freddie to make up for the lost time she spent in the Ecopod.

When they put Frasier and Lilith back together, the idea for a spin-off wasn't even put into the works... sooooo, when they decided on the spin-off, they had to rid Frasier of Lilith somehow to start on a totally clean plate. They basically had to lift Frasier from all Cheers surroundings, so they made it understood that they divorced. I suppose it was easy to get away with, seeing they had so many marital problems in the last season of Cheers.

Anyhow, does anyone else find it odd that both Peri Gilpin and John Mahoney guest starred on Cheers as completely different characters, during years Frasier was on the show. Do these casting directors/writers/producers, etc. think the viewers are that stupid?! LMAO.

Yeah, I knew she was in the credits in Season 10, and then not in Season 11 (since she obviously wasn't there as much).

Thanks for all your input, that's cool. :) And I just knew that you'd post on this topic! lol :D

Of course I'd post on this topic! Any topic where my Bebe is the main focus is worth my input, LOL! Glad to know I'm so transparent. ;) Hell, I even bring Bebe into the topic when no one else could even fathom fitting her in there. I always can bring the woman into the subject! I'm crazy.

Anyway, she was actually in the credits in whichever episodes she was in in Season 11. Unless Nick at Nite is just screwed up (which we all know it is), they switched the openings for whichever ones she was in. :)

N@N was pretty accurate for season 11 eps that Bebe was in, they had her in the theme. i remember tho one ep., earlier (like season 6 or something) that had Bebe in the theme, but she wasnt in the ep. then there was a season 11 ep w/ her in the theme, but she wasnt in the ep. o well, more Bebe! lol

i think bebe left because she missed the stage.

Yeah, they'd drop her into the opening credits for the episodes she was in, and would use the season 6-9 credits (without Bebe) for the episodes where she didn't appear.

When Lilith returned to Frasier in a late season 11 episode, she didn't show up until the end of the first part of a two parter. But the "surprise" was spoiled because Bebe was back in the opening credits for that episode.

Yes, that is why she left. What they were confused on was as to why she didn't just stick it out through Season 11, seeing as it was the last season. She picked an inopportune time to leave, but, the theory circulating is she wasn't aware it would infact be the last season, therefore leaving Cheers behind for her first love, only to return at the end of the season for two episodes. Craziness.
