Mom and I were watching E.T. a few minutes ago and Mom and I were just wondering if the original E.T. VHS is very collectible? Because Mom and I found our VHS copy of E.T. at a garage sale a long time ago and it makes me think that since E.T. has been released on DVD the original E.T. VHS has gone up in value. I do know that it was rereleased on video in 1985 and so it makes me think that I have the 1985 release of E.T. rather than the 1982 version

I would love finding the original ET release!!!

All I can find is a 1988 digitally recorded piece of crap!!

If you have a 1985 one your lucky!!!!!!!!

I have this movie on VHS recorded from OTA TV (A local channel in my area) and its goregous!!!!!!! (I dont think Ill be able to get it any better)

E.T. first came to VHS in 1988 (MCA release w/ green tapeguards) and they don't have much value since they were mass produced.

The 1996 re-release was digitally remastered and came in a clamshell.

So the E.T. VHS tape that Mom and I got is the 1988 version? I found that hard to believe that it was mass produced when it came out. When Mom bought our E.T. VHS tape from a garage sale she mainly bought it because E.T. is one of her favorite movies

E.T. first came to VHS in 1988....Hmmmm are you sure James?? :(

I cant believe there isnt an earlier one...... Its really sad..

The only way to get the original analogue movie is off analogue cable/TV then (Like the one I have)

I havent seen a videodisc of it either but there must be! (That might not be digitally altered)

I found a Japan VHS that IS NOT digitally altered but that would have JAP SUBTITLES .... I guess if thats the only way I can get it on offfical VHS media Ill have to accept that.... (Same with SAVAGE HARVEST (The subs dont bother me on that))

Thanx James!

Spielberg was against releasing E.T. on VHS due to the bootlegging going on at the time. He finally decided to do it in 1988, but released it with security measures.

The tapes had customized green tapeguards, a holographic sticker, and the tape label was printed on a copy-proof stock. All of this made it difficult for bootleggers to duplicate.

What's hard to believe about it? E.T. was (still is) a very popular movie so Universal made a lot of VHS tapes for people to buy.

It first came to VHS in 1988, there is no other earlier date.

That cellulose tape would snap as soon as you'd look at it let alone shove in a player, and it's only worth anything to idiots like me that collect worthless stupid things
