View Full Version : The Season 1 Props/Sets/Decor Discussion Thread
'80sSitcoms 07-03-2018, 01:41 PM It's fun to notice the evolution of props, and what props were saved from the season 1 set and recycled for the cafeteria seasons! (and perhaps beyond?)
First, let's examine the globe.
In the first 4 shows, there is a beige/tan-looking (unless it's really dark lighting) globe atop the grandfather clock (where else would you keep a globe, right? haha)
Then, in the spring 1980 shows, there is a different blue globe on top of the clock.
However, there is also a globe in the girls' mainly-shown dorm room set---seen in the same episodes as the globe on the clock in the common room! So there were two globes in the dorm, one on each level; those girls must've really enjoyed looking at the world, lol.
And there's the globe's most famous legendary appearance, in season 2's "Gossip"---could one of these be the very same globe Nancy threatens to shove down Tootie's throat? lol...who knows??
RetroGuy2000 07-03-2018, 02:05 PM Thanks for the screenshots!
From these, it seems clear to me that there were at least three different globes:
1. An antique globe (or faux antique) on top of the grandfather clock, done in brown, which has a tall antique-style pedestal (it sits high above the clock). It has only one metal band: a meridian band that supports the globe.
2. A replacement globe which is done in blue. It is also placed on the grandfather clock, but it's clearly different: it doesn't have the high pedestal, and it has two metal bands: the meridian band and a second, moveable equatorial band. This was likely placed there to replace the original globe; likely some time after the first four episodes.
3 (and 4?). The blue globe in the dorm room, which has only a meridian band. This could be the same as "Nancy's globe" in Season Two, which also has just the meridian band and is blue. They look pretty similar, but they may have been different globes, since this style of globe was very common in the 1980s (I had one which my grandparents gave me in 1983-1984).
Do we ever see a globe in the classrooms?
'80sSitcoms 07-03-2018, 02:14 PM I never thought I would be involved in such a detailed discussion on globes!
Thanks for the screenshots!

I agree, especially from your very detailed points!
The more I look at it, it seems like "Nancy's threat globe" (lol) is noticeably larger than either of the dorm's blue globes. Now granted, the one in the girls' room is seen from a further distance, but it still seems like Nancy's is somewhat larger.
Do we ever see a globe in the classrooms?
Not in Mr. Gideon's room, but we do in the sex education classroom! It looks noticeably smaller than any globe yet seen so far, lol.
RetroGuy2000 07-03-2018, 02:18 PM That last image is also a GREAT screen capture because it also shows the dart board (seen in season one, on the door), the New Yorker poster (seen only in Tumpy's room in season one), and several plaques on the wall, which I think may be Blair's Harvest Queen awards (they are all the same, so likely all are the same award, but from different years).
'80sSitcoms 07-03-2018, 02:21 PM That last image is also a GREAT screen capture because it also shows the dart board (seen in season one, on the door)
Darn it, you revealed one of my surprises! (see prepped shots below, lol)
But I thought you were going to say "that last image is also a GREAT screen capture" because it visibly shows all the girls in class---but I think I posted that while you were typing, lol.
and several plaques on the wall, which I think may be Blair's Harvest Queen awards (they are all the same, so likely all are the same award, but from different years).
Ooo, I like that idea!
RetroGuy2000 07-03-2018, 02:34 PM Not in Mr. Gideon's room, but we do in the sex education classroom! It looks noticeably smaller than any globe yet seen so far, lol.
Weird that there wouldn't be a globe in the journalism room, but there's one in the sex ed room? I kid, I kid! I think that's the same classroom as IQ, so it was likely a general purpose classroom, not just reserved for sex education classes.
Still, that set sure had a ton of globes!
RetroGuy2000 07-03-2018, 02:36 PM Seeing close-ups of the dart board, it sure looks like the exact same dart board.
'80sSitcoms 07-03-2018, 02:41 PM Weird that there wouldn't be a globe in the journalism room, but there's one in the sex ed room? I kid, I kid! I think that's the same classroom as IQ, so it was likely a general purpose classroom, not just reserved for sex education classes.
And the same classroom for Mr. Bradley's genealogy class! (speaking of that, it sure gives a "small campus" feel if the headmaster has so much time on his hands that he has time to teach a class! lol)
Still, that set sure had a ton of globes!
lol, as the kids today say, "ikr??" lol
Seeing close-ups of the dart board, it sure looks like the exact same dart board.
Yeah, it must be. And in that classroom picture above, I love how Cindy and Sue Ann are seated next to each other. It gives credibility to Molly's assertion in "Running" that "You've been best friends all year long" :) So even if we didn't see that played out much, it's nice to have a visual credit.
Now here's one probably no one else has ever noticed---and I didn't until yesterday! It looks like there are recycled flowers from season 1 to season 2! I'm guessing the flowers are fake since they're still blooming a year later
RetroGuy2000 07-03-2018, 02:52 PM And the same classroom for Mr. Bradley's genealogy class! (speaking of that, it sure gives a "small campus" feel if the headmaster has so much time on his hands that he has time to teach a class! lol)
True! And they even were having a housemother teach a class!

Nice find! We get a similar visual clue with the country hats in Cindy's room. We even get a passing mention that they're still rooming together the following season, so I'm glad that relationship lasted. "Buddies Forever" indeed!
RetroGuy2000 07-03-2018, 02:55 PM Now here's one probably no one else has ever noticed---and I didn't until yesterday! It looks like there are recycled flowers from season 1 to season 2! I'm guessing the flowers are fake since they're still blooming a year later
Good eye!
Those flowers look like the fake flowers everyone decorated with in the late 1970s.
'80sSitcoms 07-03-2018, 03:22 PM True! And they even were having a housemother teach a class!
Haha, that's right! The headmaster and a housemother teaching a class---it makes the whole campus feel like it's one acre.
Nice find! We get a similar visual clue with the country hats in Cindy's room. We even get a passing mention that they're still rooming together the following season, so I'm glad that relationship lasted. "Buddies Forever" indeed!
Hear, hear! :)
Well, we've dissected the globes, now did you ever notice there were 2 grandfather clocks?? The first 4 shows have a very squared-off clock with a flat top, then the spring '80 shows feature one with a quite ornate top, and celestial bodies which move along the top of the face---what a great piece!
RetroGuy2000 07-03-2018, 06:27 PM Haha, that's right! The headmaster and a housemother teaching a class---it makes the whole campus feel like it's one acre.
Along with the tiny cafeteria, the one-stall stable, plays being rehearsed in a dorm common room, and the distinct lack of faculty. Yes. But the first season is better than later seasons when it comes to things like having enough students being involved in projects (why were only Blair, Jo, Nat and Tootie the only ones involved in any school project, particularly in season four?), the overuse of the cafeteria (even for episodes that would have been better suited elsewhere), the lack of classroom scenes at what is supposed to be a school, etc.
At least Howard the Cook never taught a class.

Yes, when you posted the globe photos, I could see there was an issue there with the clock. I wonder why they changed the clock. It's not as if they used the clock for anything, so why the need to change it?
Although the new clock is indeed quite lovely, and as you point out, the moving celestial bodies thing is very cool.
Maybe the old clock was Jenny O'Hara's, and when she departed the series, she took her clock with her.
'80sSitcoms 07-04-2018, 08:35 AM the overuse of the cafeteria (even for episodes that would have been better suited elsewhere)
I can see what you're saying, and I can go along with that, but at the same time I just love the cafeteria so much (the architecture and colors of the seasons 2-4 sets as we mentioned elsewhere), that for me, if something isn't in a more appropriate place, I sure don't mind seeing that cafeteria set. :)
At least Howard the Cook never taught a class.
Hahaha, as far as we know!
Yes, when you posted the globe photos, I could see there was an issue there with the clock.
Darn, I was hoping you hadn't noticed---I love pointing out "new things" here, lol.
Although the new clock is indeed quite lovely
That would be my guess as to why it changed. Maybe prop guy went shopping around during the hiatus, found that clock, and thought, hey, that'd be a really nice piece for the dorm.
and as you point out, the moving celestial bodies thing is very cool.
I never noticed that until seeing the clock frozen in time (no pun intended, ha). Now the next time I watch season 1 I want to watch for: 1) if the celestial bodies ever move, or if that moon is always stopped there in the same place, and 2) if the time ever changes, lol.
Maybe the old clock was Jenny O'Hara's, and when she departed the series, she took her clock with her.
 "You think you can get rid of me, 'Facts'? Well, I'll show you---see how much of a good 'time' you can have without me!" [picks up clock and hauls it on her shoulder a la lumberjack, and storms off the dorm set]
And now, a look at the changing phones from season 1, as mentioned in another thread...a pay phone in shows 1-4 (perhaps mounted on the wall by the greedy Mr. Crock? lol), and then a normal "free" phone for shows 5-13.
Per this discussion elsewhere, we cannot be sure if the pay phone was actually taken down from the set for the spring shows when they installed the regular phone, or if they left it up. My guess would be they took it down because it would look odd to the audience to see two phones in the common room (especially one pay and one regular), but, interestingly enough, I don't believe in shows 5-13 that the camera ever does pan to the left of the front door so we could see if the pay phone is there or not (cue conspiracy theory, lol).
RetroGuy2000 07-04-2018, 11:34 AM I can see what you're saying, and I can go along with that, but at the same time I just love the cafeteria so much (the architecture and colors of the seasons 2-4 sets as we mentioned elsewhere), that for me, if something isn't in a more appropriate place, I sure don't mind seeing that cafeteria set. :)
The cafeteria is totally appropriate for things like school dances, assemblies, luncheons (obviously), and many other things. It was brilliant of the producers to have that set built because it could be used for so many things. And yet there are times when the activities in it are out of place. Still, as you say, it's a gorgeous room, and that set is so cozy. Maybe in part because we've seen it for so many years, and it's a little like "comfort food".
Darn, I was hoping you hadn't noticed---I love pointing out "new things" here, lol.
Well, I only noticed when you included a screenshot in your post! So it was still your doing.
That would be my guess as to why it changed. Maybe prop guy went shopping around during the hiatus, found that clock, and thought, hey, that'd be a really nice piece for the dorm.
It's funny because we even see the "celestial bodies" grandfather clock in the revised opening credits for season one, behind both Nancy and Cindy. Isn't that odd?
I never noticed that until seeing the clock frozen in time (no pun intended, ha). Now the next time I watch season 1 I want to watch for: 1) if the celestial bodies ever move, or if that moon is always stopped there in the same place, and 2) if the time ever changes, lol.
I'll be checking that out, too. Likely it's just stopped, as a prop they didn't think about, but we'll see!
 "You think you can get rid of me, 'Facts'? Well, I'll show you---see how much of a good 'time' you can have without me!" [picks up clock and hauls it on her shoulder a la lumberjack, and storms off the dorm set]
Haha! Well, I wasn't imagining that much drama, but sure!

You know, I wouldn't put it past The Crock!
Thanks goodness Mr. Bradley had a biiiit more common sense. No wonder Nancy needed a scholarship! ;)

Found it! We see to the left of the door in "Molly's Holiday", when we see Blair's luggage. No sign of a pay phone! Bradley must have had it removed!
'80sSitcoms 07-04-2018, 11:46 AM Still, as you say, it's a gorgeous room, and that set is so cozy. Maybe in part because we've seen it for so many years, and it's a little like "comfort food".
A "little"? It is enormous visual "comfort food" for me!
It's funny because we even see the "celestial bodies" grandfather clock in the revised opening credits for season one, behind both Nancy and Cindy. Isn't that odd?
But that's where the "celestial bodies" grandfather clock is---the 9 shows in spring 1980. :) It's the plainer squared-off clock that's in the first 4 shows in '79.
I'll be checking that out, too. Likely it's just stopped, as a prop they didn't think about, but we'll see!
Yeah, if anything, they just probably manually changed the time in shows or between shows, lol.
Thanks goodness Mr. Bradley had a biiiit more common sense. No wonder Nancy needed a scholarship! ;)
Ha!

Yes, but what do we see?? It looks like either a large poster/picture or curtain from the top down toward the bottom, but then some kind of white piece of furniture or chair/rack of some kind. lol..hmmmm...
And as we see from the first 4 shows, that pay phone was very close beside the front door.
RetroGuy2000 07-04-2018, 11:58 AM But that's where the "celestial bodies" grandfather clock is---the 9 shows in spring 1980. :)
No, no. I don't mean that it's odd that we would see the clock in the Spring 1980 credits... I mean it's odd that, of all the shots they could have used, the clock manages to get photobombed in two of the girls' photos.
Yes, but what do we see?? It looks like either a large poster/picture or curtain from the top down toward the bottom, but then some kind of white piece of furniture or chair/rack of some kind. lol..hmmmm...
I think the top part is just the wall. The possible rack might be a luggage rack. But it looks to me like the black edge might just be the edge of the set, and to the left a little further would be the studio audience.
And as we see from the first 4 shows, that pay phone was very close beside the front door.
Yep! Another mystery solved!
'80sSitcoms 07-04-2018, 12:05 PM No, no. I don't mean that it's odd that we would see the clock in the Spring 1980 credits... I mean it's odd that, of all the shots they could have used, the clock manages to get photobombed in two of the girls' photos.
Oh, I see; I misinterpreted your "odd", lol.
I think the top part is just the wall.
But it's something there, and it's got colors/patterns on it. I wish they panned over more so we could see what it definitely is, lol.
And yeah with that rack thing it's like you can make out a "leg" and "stopper" kind of thing on the bottom of it (to avoid scuffs, slipping, etc.).
The possible rack might be a luggage rack. But it looks to me like the black edge might just be the edge of the set, and to the left a little further would be the studio audience.!
The black edge is actually from my cropping of the photo from a black background; I wanted to show that I was including as far over in the still as I could when trying to ID these items, lol.
RetroGuy2000 07-04-2018, 12:41 PM But it's something there, and it's got colors/patterns on it. I wish they panned over more so we could see what it definitely is, lol.
I think the pattern/color is cheap replacement wallpaper that doesn't match the existing wallpaper, or the wallpaper that had previously been behind the payphone. When they ripped out the payphone, the wallpaper was likely damaged, and was removed.
As we've previously discussed (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=343672), this set was previously used on another show, an extremely low-budget, low-quality show called Co-Ed Fever that only aired for one episode. But looking at that episode, I can even see the payphone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClD8Fidcd_k&feature=youtu.be) (at 3:41 and again at 3:51), and beyond that, to the left, an odd curtained-off area.
And yeah with that rack thing it's like you can make out a "leg" and "stopper" kind of thing on the bottom of it (to avoid scuffs, slipping, etc.).
Yep, I see what you're saying.

Ah, got it!

Whooooa, that is so surreal to see it be the "same" set, but in a previous form before it was altered/adjusted to "become" the FOL set...wild!
And now, since you've mentioned a couple of times the New Yorker poster which was originally Tumpy's, here it is in its original place, and then after Blair absconded with it---what, after she heard the girls were expelled did she run over to their room and grab that for her own decor?
(sidebar: "Tumpy" always reminds me of Linda Ronstadt!)

I feel the same way!
And also: It's like, "What are the sacred, hallowed halls of Eastland doing on this craptacular show? Who are these random people in the Eastland dorm?"

It's not in Blair's nature to steal, without being goaded into it, like when Jo and she hotwired that van. I suspect that once Tumpy was expelled, Blair salvaged it, as a memento of "The Group".
(sidebar: "Tumpy" always reminds me of Linda Ronstadt!)
Holy crap! I see that resemblance!

Oh I know, I was just making a joke, lol. It does make you wonder though, did Tumpy find Blair before she forever exited the campus and gift her the poster, or did she just leave it and Blair heard their vacated room had things left in it, or what? Interesting...
Holy crap! I see that resemblance!
Right?? I can't look at her and not think of Linda! lol..."You don't hit the microphone...it hits youuuuu!"
And now, "tiger time"!
As mentioned elsewhere, the girls have a stuffed tiger occasionally seen in season 1. There is also a sombrero occasionally seen hanging by the windows. Well, the season 2 set makeshift bedroom set was lucky enough to be gifted these items; sometimes you see the tiger wearing the sombrero  , and sometimes it's bare-headed.
It's funny, I always thought of the tiger as wearing the sombrero, but I see in this Tootie screen cap, he's not. Now when I watch the cafeteria years again I'll have to make note of how often he's seen hatless, and how often he's seen like he's ready to got to Mexico.
RetroGuy2000 07-04-2018, 02:19 PM It does make you wonder though, did Tumpy find Blair before she forever exited the campus and gift her the poster, or did she just leave it and Blair heard their vacated room had things left in it, or what? Interesting...
Based on what we saw, Tumpy might have sold the poster to Blair so she could buy marijuana.
But I'd like to think that, after being so mean, Tumpy realized the error of her ways, and gave Blair the poster as a gesture of peace. She might have even given Sue Ann something, too, although regrettably, we never saw Sue Ann and Cindy's room after the first season.
Right?? I can't look at her and not think of Linda! lol..."You don't hit the microphone...it hits youuuuu!"
Ahahahahaha! GREAT caption! (Much better than mine).
'80sSitcoms 07-04-2018, 02:35 PM I found another season 1 recyclee!
Check out the totally random painting of Notre Dame in this adaptation of the girls' room in "Dope". It was junked away in the storage room over the kitchen that summer!
At first I thought Blair painted it for Parents' Night in LMLD, but, while she did paint Notre Dame, her painting is much different, so it's not hers (you'd think this smaller painting would still be in LMLD with all the French decorations and paintings in the common room, but I haven't been able to locate it there). I don't know if she was supposed to have been the artist behind this smaller one as well, or what. But it's funny that it ended up junked in storage!

Nice find!
And since the painting is still on Blair's easel, I'd guess that yes, she painted that one as well. It's clearly not as good as the other Notre Dame painting, so I suppose that it's justified that it ended up in storage. Can't win 'em all!

Haha! Yeah, maybe she just told somebody to go junk it somewhere, but they didn't have the heart to throw it away, so they found "a nice storage space" for it, lol.
You said "Blair's easel", though; do we know for sure that's her easel? I mean it logically makes sense as I don't think we were presented with evidence of any other girl painting; in that case, yeah, it would make perfect sense to assume it's her easel.
And Retro I think you were posting a reply when I updated a previous post with the tiger/sombrero pics---I loved that I got to use two identifying arrows in one photo---"Ole!"

Well, the whole premise of "Like Mother, Like Daughter" is that Blair is like her mom, who paints: she excitedly comes downstairs with a painting she's just signed. In other episodes, we see the easel in Blair's room.
And Retro I think you were posting a reply when I updated a previous post with the tiger/sombrero pics---I loved that I got to use two identifying arrows in one photo---"Ole!"
Oh, I see!
The tiger (with sombrero) is a cute decoration. I'm glad it made the transition between seasons one and two, like the Notre Dame painting, the 1970s faux flowers, and the New Yorker poster, but unlike the grandfather clock.

This is the only episode I've noticed that painting in so far, and it's the final set in "Dope"---I guess while Sue Ann was drugged out and spacing out about whales, Blair was celebrating her clear ability to think by dashing off a painting of Notre Dame, lol.

lol, the poor clock...we should go put a flower in its hair
Yeah, I've always liked the tiger. For years I thought it was so random (but wonderfully so) with that sombrero on it  - I can't believe you never noticed him before! But I'm glad you're in "the group (about knowing about tigers with sombreros)" now!

Oddly enough, I found a similar grandfather clock, with the rotating celestial bodies, on ebay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Celestial-Grandfather-Clock/192546785428?hash=item2cd4aec894:g:-7cAAOSwEzJbAxd9), for $500.00.

Hee! No, I never noticed the tiger before. I'm honored to be in "The Group"! ;)
That's why I love this forum. There's always someone who has noticed some little detail no-one else has ever noticed, or has some special insight. It makes watching the re-runs so much more interesting!

Quite!
And yes I do take pride in the fact that I have "known the tiger" for decades now, but I have to admit, where I have gotten some credit here for catching things about props on the sets, some of these I believe I never would have even noticed were it not for looking things up in episodes on YouTube. It is SO easy to see something like the Notre Dame painting in NG2, when you are purposefully keeping an eye out for noticeable things, and then just happening to see it in a photo I already had from "Dope" featuring the tiger. Or noticing the vase of flowers in "Shoplifting" and seeing apparently those same flowers in Molly's room in "Molly's Holiday", or seeing how many globes there were, and how there were two different season 1 clocks! Just viewing the shows routinely, it would be hard to catch all of these. But thanks to YouTube and an ongoing gallery of screen caps here, now things like that are much easier to see!
But yes, I am proud that I knew about the sombrero-wearing tiger all along on my own! It was always so cute/random in the girls' room over the cafeteria, and then when I noticed those props in season 1 I was like "Wow! That's where they got the tiger with the sombrero!"
Say, now we can imagine what a world would be like where set pieces on FOL were included in the opening credits! :D
RetroGuy2000 07-05-2018, 01:30 PM Haha! Your revised opening credits are crazy!!!

 True, first the set dressing exodus, and then the girls!
And you know, if anyone had asked me what color the dorm piano was, I would have said "brown".
But it's not---it's, like, "cream"! (all the way through to "Dope")
RetroGuy2000 07-05-2018, 01:59 PM Considering the subject, I'd call that color ivory! ;)

It's darker than the piano keys, but that is funny, lol.
'80sSitcoms 07-05-2018, 03:05 PM Oo! The sombrero is more agile than we thought!
Just take a look at this screen cap from "Molly's Holiday" --- it was so excited for spring break it somehow made its way downstairs and was just waiting to make a break for it!

Nicely spotted!
I wonder why any of the students planned to take it with them during the break? It was supposed to be a short break, and only Blair was taking (what seemed like) the majority of her belongings.
Do we assume the sombrero was Blair's?

Oh I don't like to think of it as one of the girls' planning to take the hat on spring break, I just like to think of it as totally random that it somehow ended up down there.
Or who knows, maybe some of them were just playing around with it down in the common room. Maybe it was "Taco Tuesday" earlier in the week.
By the way, this crushed a last clinging hope I had of the season one pale piano getting any interaction ever---I had this hope that when Mrs. Garrett loses her steam stumbling in through the back door to catch Molly, that she braced herself with the piano for support when she stops and says, "Oh, one more lap and I woulda caught her!"---but no, she braces herself on the banister instead---so close! Oh, poor piano!

Luckily, the cast and crew learned the errors of their ways, and throughout the later years of the show, they played other pianos in memory of the piano that never once was even touched.
Farewell, Ivory Piano in the Common Room! We hardly knew ye!
'80sSitcoms 07-06-2018, 10:02 AM Last night I saw the Mister Rogers documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" in a local theater, and that got me to thinking about something...you see, my favorite puppet character on that show is the French tiger Grandpere (shown below), who lives in the Eiffel Tower in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. He's a new favorite; my childhood favorite was X the Owl, but since Twitch has streamed the entire series twice in the past year I fell in love with Grandpere as a new favorite character (he wasn't shown nearly as much as the others, so I didn't really remember him from the show as a kid).
So in LMLD, it would have been a lovely tribute if Blair had painted Grandpere atop the Notre Dame cathedral---then I would have been even more proud of her than Prototype Monica™ was!
And thanks to the magic of computers, I can now kind of mock that up myself for a "Facts"-meets-"Mr. Rogers" fantasy, lol:

Good ol' "PM", lol...they had to go back to re-do work on her before releasing her in time for the next season, lol.
So, has anyone ever really paid heed to outside the back door before? I assumed it was just an open grassy area, but look---it's a walled patio with furniture! (I like to think to the left of that brick column we see in the 2nd photo is a "gateway/entrance").

GREAT screenshots!
It's possible that they were duplicating the back courtyard of Harwood Hall, if that area was built sometime after it was used on Co-Ed Fever, since Harwood Hall has a back porch area.
That set had a lot of cool areas. It's kinda nice that that set was the one recreated on Dancing With the Stars.
'80sSitcoms 07-06-2018, 04:47 PM And Mrs. Garrett actually looks a little slimmer in that moment than I'm used to thinking of her in season 1. She was probably heavier in those first 4 shows and I'd never realized it.
So who's the cat-lover at Eastland? There's a cat pillow in a chair and a poster with 3 kitties, lol (in the poster shot you can see 2 kitties, and I pointed out the ears of a 3rd one behind Nancy, lol---you can also see it at other times too [I believe it's in "Molly's Holiday" as well] )

The cat poster and the cat... thingy are nice touches. I do wonder who was the cat-lover, among the girls. Did we ever get dialog about pets at home?
I do remember that briefly, Tootie had a cat. So maybe the cat decor was hers?

Not that I recall. And I believe the "thingy" lol is a pillow.

You do? Wow, good memory, lol. But the cat poster is also in "Molly's room" in her episode, and there wasn't a lot of consistency with this one room being made over for each episode to suddenly be "_____'s" room, so who knows, lol.
And look, our old friend the tiger shows up on the downstage side of the chest of drawers in "Overachieving", and in the windows in "Adoption", lol.
It's possible this is "Tootie's Tiger" since it transitions to the girls' room over the cafeteria in the window by Tootie and Natalie's bed, and, noting that this is Natalie and Tootie's room where these two screen caps are from, the tiger is at the head of Tootie's bed in "Adoption" (the fact that the furniture layout in "Tootie's room" in both of these episodes is completely different notwithstanding  ). But that's just a possibility; a likely one putting these pieces, together, but not absolute fact.
RetroGuy2000 07-06-2018, 06:58 PM You do? Wow, good memory, lol.
Yeah, it's the two-part episode where Jeff gets her a cat (5-23 and 5-240), mentioned on this blog (http://cousingeri.blogspot.com/2016/05/the-cats-of-life.html), which also mentions an episode (5-19) where Tootie suggests smuggling in a cat. So apparently, she had an affection for cats.
But the cat poster is also in "Molly's room" in her episode, and there wasn't a lot of consistency with this one room being made over for each episode to suddenly be "_____'s" room, so who knows, lol.

Maybe they just moved the beds between semesters, as you might do when you want to rearrange the furniture for a fresh change.

'80sSitcoms 07-10-2018, 01:06 PM The question has been brought up; is the pay phone in the cafeteria lounge the same pay phone was was previously in the dorm?
And the answer is...
Maybe, but probably not, but at least partially definitely not.
If you look at the bodies of the phone they certainly look mostly identical, so it's hard to tell from that alone. However, the receivers and cords are obviously different.
And, I'd never really thought about it before with such awareness, but one thing I love about that lounge pay phone is the black receiver and the thick black "curly" cord which was the type of cord "regular" phones had back then (I guess I have never seen another pay phone with that type of cord; they're always the cold, hard steely ones like the one in the dorm had).
The receiver being black makes it more "uniform" with the unit, and that thick black curly cord has a warmth to it which makes it a "comfort food' type of phone for me, lol. There is just something about it I find delightfully cozy. :)

Great observation, '80s! The cord styles definitely indicate they were different phones. Like you, I only ever used the ones with steel cords. I think those were much more common, as the other kind would be easily vandalized.
'80sSitcoms 07-10-2018, 10:39 PM Great observation, '80s! The cord styles definitely indicate they were different phones.
I don't know, what if they got that pay phone from season 1, and the prop guy thought or a producer got the idea of switching out the receiver for a corded one like a regular household phone, to give it that "special touch"? Of course it could be a different pay phone, but I wonder if any pay phones ever had coiled rubber cords? I never saw one, but I don't know that any like that didn't exist.
Like you, I only ever used the ones with steel cords. I think those were much more common, as the other kind would be easily vandalized.
Well I'm sure glad they got a solid black receiver with the rubber coils. Those thick rubber coils just had a "warmth" about them that I love. :)
'80sSitcoms 07-13-2018, 01:37 PM And now a look at some season 1 sets we haven't yet seen in this thread:
First, here's a look at different angles of the cafeteria---and apparently, a camera in one of them! I never noticed this before! You can tell when the camera pans over during Mr. Bradley's entrance that that black thing is not part of the set, and isn't supposed to be seen, lol.
Also, between Cindy and Nancy is what looks like a type of sink/washing station, so I'm assuming it's where the girls are supposed to rinse off their dishes before leaving their dishes trays on the cart behind Cindy.
'80sSitcoms 07-13-2018, 05:35 PM And now we have a couple of looks at the gym...

RetroGuy2000 07-13-2018, 08:36 PM Based on your screenshots, '80s, I now strongly suspect the set for the S1 gym is the same set as the S1 cafeteria. '80sSitcoms 07-16-2018, 09:42 AM One more season 1 "set"; as we can see, the front door/porch area stayed pretty much the same from "The Girls' School" onward (though I think in season 1 it was only seen in "The Facts of Love a.k.a. I don't think we can tell if the porch light was there in TGS or not, as the space for it is just to the side of the view. And the exterior siding looks gray and cream in TGS, but it looks blue in season 1 when lit at night.

'80s, I have so enjoyed your analyses! It's been so fun to read your thoughts, see the screen shots of the props and sets, etc. Thanks so much for doing these! You always offer interesting theories.
We do actually see this part of the set, when looking through the door in "Molly's Holiday" and a few other episodes. It might even be worthwhile to see if different episodes reveal other items on the porch.
I definitely think that's Cindy's bike, although there's a small chance it's Molly's or Natalie's (Tootie wouldn't ride a bike on roller skates).
The wall in the back shows that there are other rooms on that level of the dorm. When looking through the common room, one can see the hallway on the left, and beyond that corner, what I assumed was the kitchen behind the closet area... but what would this room then be? Did anybody ever mention a powder room? I ask because the window is high up, indicating the possible need for some privacy.
Of course, having that room jut out like that destroys the illusion of this being the building shown in the opening credits, as that building doesn't have anything like that white wall.

True, I just meant seeing it as its "own set", with staged actors on it. I do like though how we get peeks of it through the door.

Because of that high-up window, I just kind of picture the hallway turning to the left ending in a dead end after several feet, maybe with some type of desk or something there. Not exciting, I know, lol, but I don't think we ever see any characters come from around that corner, although they might. You know how in some places there will just be an up-high window that doesn't really have any rhyme or reason? Maybe this is one of those windows, lol. Or it could even be like a maintenance staircase or something, or leading to an attic (as a fan you there are many imaginative possibilities, lol).
Of course, having that room jut out like that destroys the illusion of this being the building shown in the opening credits, as that building doesn't have anything like that white wall.
The building in the establishing shot bridging the Drummonds' penthouse with Eastlake? I know, it's funny they didn't think about that, lol.
I like how we can see across the lawn when they open the door :-) And our Cindy loves leaving "her" bike by that front door
You will also notice that shorter beige, brick-trimmed "wall" that's outside the front door, is the same that's outside the back door!
(the two front door screenshots below, from earlier in this thread)
Actually, yeah, if you look at the Mr. Bradley pic, it does look like turning left down the hall would just dead-end after quickly after all.
Also, a few "Running" shots here:
"Buddies Forever"
"Cindy, Cindy, Cindy, Cindy, Cindy, Cindy, Cindy, Cindy, Cindy," :D
"Three Champs"

RetroGuy2000 07-17-2018, 10:55 AM Because of that high-up window, I just kind of picture the hallway turning to the left ending in a dead end after several feet, maybe with some type of desk or something there.
All good theories! The screenshot with Mr. Bradley is good, here, as it at least shows us the rug and the hallway coming to an end.
The building in the establishing shot bridging the Drummonds' penthouse with Eastlake? I know, it's funny they didn't think about that, lol.[/quote[
Well, not just the Eastlake dorm, but also the Opening Credits dorm seen from seasons 1 through 4, and the first two episodes of season 5.

Nice shot of the lawn and trees! And another shot of Cindy's bike!

Unless there's a door on the left.
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 11:32 AM Well, not just the Eastlake dorm, but also the Opening Credits dorm seen from seasons 1 through 4, and the first two episodes of season 5.
I'm not following you here, because they don't show season 1's dorm exterior in opening credits.
Oh wait, do you mean that main exterior shot? I never thought of that as a dorm, I always pictured it as like an administration building. Is the real life building a dorm?
Unless there's a door on the left.
Seeing that Bradley shot though, I don't think there would be a door unless it were a closet, since turning left down the hall ends after a few/several feet.
And now, a look at Cindy and Sue Ann's room :) (where the sombrero, Sue Ann's rural hats, the paper flowers, and the yellow penannts got their start!)
And the only ever view of an upstairs hall filmed actually in the hall! lol
-
RetroGuy2000 07-17-2018, 11:52 AM Nice screenshots!
It seems clear, now, from the screenshots, that Cindy and Sue Ann's room is the same as the other dorm room, but the door is on the other side, and the door to (what I assume is the bathroom) is on the side of the wall facing the viewers, rather than in the corner. What great set people they must have had! I never would have suspected this was the same room.
The yellow pennant, the sombrero, and the flowers now all feel like old, familiar friends. Hey! Notice there are two yellow pennants in that room?!
The shot of the hallway is interesting (I remember seeing it during episode viewings). I wonder where that arched door goes?
And there are two desks in that room, strongly indicating that two girls did indeed live in that room. The straw hats confirm what I've long believed.
Cindy seems to be a fan of cats, too, based on the poster above her bed... unless that's Sue Ann's bed.
RetroGuy2000 07-17-2018, 11:59 AM I'm not following you here, because they don't show season 1's dorm exterior in opening credits.
Oh wait, do you mean that main exterior shot? I never thought of that as a dorm, I always pictured it as like an administration building. Is the real life building a dorm?
Yes, Harwood Court is a dorm (https://www.pomona.edu/administration/housing-residence-life/residential-life/residence-halls-pomona-college). Be sure to check out the description, parts of which certainly made me laugh (emphasis mine):
"Harwood Court is the oldest residence hall on South Campus. Built in 1921, it was most recently renovated in 2010 to provide modern facilities, upgrade the plumbing and electrical systems, improve sustainability, and to preserve the original charm of the building. Harwood is arranged around a central courtyard and houses 170 students. The residence hall has a large main lounge area with its own kitchen, television room and grand piano. Laundry facilities are in the basement. Both single and double rooms are available and primarily first-year students and sophomores live there.
Room draw information: Harwood has approximately 114 singles, 23 one-room doubles, plus three four-person apartments. There are outside entrance basement rooms and four tower suites."
170 students could be housed in that dorm... why were there only seven girls there?!
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 12:04 PM ^---Oh, so that really is a dorm! Haha! Nice emphasis too, lol...well, in my fan universe, it's Eastland's administration building :) (I know it's a dorm in reality, but I love picturing it in Eastland's world as a large administration building, lol)
Nice screenshots!
It seems clear, now, from the screenshots, that Cindy and Sue Ann's room is the same as the other dorm room, but the door is on the other side
Ooo, good eye! I believe you're right!
and the door to (what I assume is the bathroom) is on the side of the wall facing the viewers, rather than in the corner.
The one by Cindy's bed? Yeah I would assume that's the bathroom, too. And probably the door near the bedroom's door would be a closet.
What great set people they must have had! I never would have suspected this was the same room.
Right?? And without your investigation I never would have suspected the gym and cafeteria was the same room with a split personality as well!
The yellow pennant, the sombrero, and the flowers now all feel like old, familiar friends. Hey! Notice there are two yellow pennants in that room?!
I actually did!
The shot of the hallway is interesting (I remember seeing it during episode viewings). I wonder where that arched door goes?
Right?? I noticed the arch here too. It's quite intriguing! Perhaps it's like a linen closet at the end of the hall. Who knows? It can be anything! lol
And there are two desks in that room, strongly indicating that two girls did indeed live in that room. The straw hats confirm what I've long believed.
Oh wow, there are! So the girls would be facing each other when sitting at their desks---you have quite the roving eye this morning!
Cindy seems to be a fan of cats, too, based on the poster above her bed... unless that's Sue Ann's bed.
And now for a look at Mr. Bradley's office.
And you will notice Retro, because I noticed so I'm sure you would being as you are the one who cracked the gym/cafeteria case wide open  , that a certain pair of windows behind Mr. Bradley looks very familiar! ;)
However, I believe the trophy is different; at first I wonder if he "stole" one from Cindy's room, but I just looked and Cindy's trophies are all different.
And this scene contains the oddest/worst edit in the show's history!
Check it out, Molly asks for the phone book; Bradley gives it to her, asking why, she says so she can hock her typewriter, and immediately after Molly turns to leave, it cuts to Bradley talking to Miss Mahoney---in the same doorway! (you'll note the bookcase-by-door's lamp behind him in the lower left) This moment was always so jarring, and no wonder! Who staged him there for that line? Who edited this scene??
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 12:32 PM And stepping back to the front door a moment, it looks as though there's no trace of the outdoor wall light yet, and you can see how the path looks.
Also, there's a 3rd yellow pennant!
RetroGuy2000 07-17-2018, 01:00 PM ^---Oh, so that really is a dorm! Haha! Nice emphasis too, lol...well, in my fan universe, it's Eastland's administration building :) (I know it's a dorm in reality, but I love picturing it in Eastland's world as a large administration building, lol)
Well, if you've grown up believing it was an admin building, who am I to shake your long-standing beliefs?
I suspect many people believe it's the cafeteria building, because they started watching the show in seasons 2/3/4. But this shot was used since season 1, and it's of a real dorm, so I believe it's the exterior of the dorm.
The one by Cindy's bed? Yeah I would assume that's the bathroom, too. And probably the door near the bedroom's door would be a closet.
Yes, bathroom and closet.
Right?? I noticed the arch here too. It's quite intriguing! Perhaps it's like a linen closet at the end of the hall. Who knows? It can be anything! lol
It's the secret passage to the gym!
Oh wow, there are! So the girls would be facing each other when sitting at their desks---you have quite the roving eye this morning!
Yeah, imagine those two girls facing each other while doing their studies in "Running"!
And now for a look at Mr. Bradley's office.
And you will notice Retro, because I noticed so I'm sure you would being as you are the one who cracked the gym/cafeteria case wide open  , that a certain pair of windows behind Mr. Bradley looks very familiar! ;)
Nice catch! Wow, they really re-used sets!
However, I believe the trophy is different; at first I wonder if he "stole" one from Cindy's room, but I just looked and Cindy's trophies are all different.
Yes, I looked for that, too! Glad to say they're different.
BUT: shouldn't he have had Sue Ann's trophy in his office?
And this scene contains the oddest/worst edit in the show's history!

GREAT catch!
I actually think the worst edit in the show's history is in Season Three, when Sue Ann and Cindy are talking with Jo about her erroneous story in the school paper, and they suddenly disappear, mid-scene. And they're never seen again... DUN DUN DUN! (Well, except in Season Eight.)
Clearly, the part where they get up and leave was cut out, leading to a continuity issue, and it's also sad that we don't even get to see their farewell.
But yes, I agree Mr. Bradley's move is very odd; you can tell he's on the other side of the door because you can even see the weird lamp in the background.
I suspect the editors spliced in a scene from the second taping into the first (or vice versa), but somehow the blocking for that taping is different. Not sure why they would do that; seems like a bad directorial decision.
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 01:12 PM Well, if you've grown up believing it was an admin building, who am I to shake your long-standing beliefs?
You're right, that's what I grew up believing for decades now! I sort of thought of it as the cafeteria's exterior when I was little probably, but the entrance is different from how we are led to believe with the interior of the cafeteria and how that entrance would be, so I amended my rationalizing to thinking it was like the main administration building, lol. But it someone wants to picture it as a dorm, have at it, because in reality it is a dorm, lol.
It's the secret passage to the gym!
Oo! Oo! Or a secret passage to the door above season 2/3/4 kitchen!
Yeah, imagine those two girls facing each other while doing their studies in "Running"!
Haha! Yup..."Every morning those girls are up at 6 a.m.! At night they fall asleep doing their homework!" (and now we know where!)
Nice catch! Wow, they really re-used sets!
And I never would have thought it before this thread! lol
BUT: shouldn't he have had Sue Ann's trophy in his office?
Haha, yup, if they'd had it as a prop back then, it would've been a nice addition.
GREAT catch!
I actually think the worst edit in the show's history is in Season Three, when Sue Ann and Cindy are talking with Jo about her erroneous story in the school paper, and they suddenly disappear, mid-scene.
Funny, that never stood out to me; I'll have to watch it for it. But this one is always so awkward to see! Bradley's facing his door watching Molly leave, than at the same time he's in front of said door, his back to it, facing inside his office??
Definitely the worst edit in season 1 at least, lol.
Clearly, the part where they get up and leave was cut out, leading to a continuity issue, and it's also sad that we don't even get to see their farewell.

Makes perfect sense about the tapings/blockings; but odd that no one thought about that ahead of time or realized/caught it, lol.
And now...Mrs. Garrett's room! The housemother's den! A look at its progression in the early days...
First, here are some looks at it from spring 1979, in "The Girls' School" on DS---note the tall plant stand in front of the windows, and the chandelier hanging down in this first dressing of the set; and look, Mrs. Garrett's Swiss windows even have a left side window, something I never noticed! It's clearly seen in "The Return of Mr. Garrett", but not sure if it's still there in the spring 1980 shows. (I love Swiss windows!)
And we may have thought that was Mrs. Garrett's bathroom up the windows, but look in the next post---Mr. Bradley and Miss Mahoney come bursting out of it when they hear of gambling! So that's allegedly a door to a hallway and another back door or something if they are not using it as a bathroom for this episode. But how strange!
-
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 01:41 PM And now Mrs. Garrett's housemother room in summer and autumn 1979...
(the decor on the mantelpiece looks nearly identical to how it was dressed for "The Girls' School")
-
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 01:45 PM And Mrs. Garrett's housemother room in spring 1980...(two posts for all these photos...lots of angles/views!)
One thing of note, in the 3rd photo we have as far over to the right of Mrs. Garrett's fireplace as we see.
-
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 01:47 PM Note the clear view of the fireplace in the 3rd photo; it's so strange thinking of Mrs. Garrett having her own fireplace! It's another one of those things I always noticed peripherally, but just never registered enough to ponder.
Also of note:
In the 5th photo you will see what's to the right of Mrs. Garrett's fireplace again
Judging by the mantelpiece, apparently Mrs. Garrett became quite the ocean fanatic by the time of "Overachieving"! lol
And because Mr. Bradley is so tall, in the 6th photo you can see the decor on the top shelf over fireplace mantelpiece, and in the 7th photo you can see the bottom of a frame which shows there is a picture above Mrs. Garrett's door (it's a good thing he's tall so we can catch this stuff, lol).
-
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 03:55 PM Wait a minute, did they adjust the window area??
Check out the way it looks in "Like Mother, Like Daughter"---2 left-side windows back there. Yet in the very next-produced episode, "The Return of Mr. Garrett", there's only one!
-
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 03:57 PM And while we're on the subject of Mrs. Garrett's room (I just love the warmth and comfort of her room), I believe LMLD is the only episode where we see a nighttime scene taking place there, hence the chandelier lit (which only exists in these first 4 shows---maybe it was Miss Mahoney's and she ran off with it when they booted her? lol).
Also, I am really digging this 1970s owl picture!
-
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 04:00 PM I forgot there's a front door scene in "Adoption"---now they've put a chandelier in the hall!
And there's that oh-so-realistic-looking backdrop! But the perspective/angle is all wrong---those front lawns would be right smack up against Eastland buildings!
-
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 04:07 PM Mrs. Garrett a thief?? Say it isn't so!
But look! This bird picture that's in the girls' room first later somehow mysteriously turns up hanging in Mrs. Garrett's room!
-
RetroGuy2000 07-17-2018, 05:10 PM I forgot there's a front door scene in "Adoption"---now they've put a chandelier in the hall!
Makes me wonder if it really is a hall...
And there's that oh-so-realistic-looking backdrop! But the perspective/angle is all wrong---those front lawns would be right smack up against Eastland buildings!

That's... definitely not the most convincing backdrop I've ever seen... Couldn't they at least have put up more shrubbery?
RetroGuy2000 07-17-2018, 05:12 PM Mrs. Garrett a thief?? Say it isn't so!

Now, why would she take that ugly picture? More importantly, why do the girls have a penguin on their wall?
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 10:40 PM Makes me wonder if it really is a hall...
It's only about a 3-foot space, if that, so it sure can't be much of anything at all (the left side when you turn down the hall is the same length as that small column of wall the telephone sits against).
That's... definitely not the most convincing backdrop I've ever seen... Couldn't they at least have put up more shrubbery?
It's surprising someone didn't notice and re-think that! lol
Now, why would she take that ugly picture? More importantly, why do the girls have a penguin on their wall?
There are many odd things on the walls in season 1, but that penguin is definitely one of the oddest, lol.
Even more importantly, did you miss the rest of the posts I put on page 6 with 30 photos? lol
RetroGuy2000 07-18-2018, 12:30 AM You're right, that's what I grew up believing for decades now! I sort of thought of it as the cafeteria's exterior when I was little probably, but the entrance is different from how we are led to believe with the interior of the cafeteria and how that entrance would be, so I amended my rationalizing to thinking it was like the main administration building, lol. Hahaha! Or the secret passage to the door we thought was the basement door, but likely isn't!
Haha! Yup..."Every morning those girls are up at 6 a.m.! At night they fall asleep doing their homework!" (and now we know where!)
Excellent quote! I can definitely picture it now!
Funny, that never stood out to me; I'll have to watch it for it.
Ugh, it's the worst possible edit at the worst possible time. Our last scene with Cindy and Sue Ann, and we're robbed of any kind of farewell. Just... one moment they exist, the next moment they do not. It's an otherwise good episode for them, and they both get to shine just a bit, but that edit makes me mad.
But this one is always so awkward to see! Bradley's facing his door watching Molly leave, than at the same time he's in front of said door, his back to it, facing inside his office??
Definitely the worst edit in season 1 at least, lol.
I do see what you're saying. Yes, it's bad. But at least Molly didn't vanish into thin air. Right then, anyway. ;)

Thanks for these screenshots! I get so involved in the episodes that even when I'm looking for odd details, I don't always spot them. I like Mrs. G's fireplace, and the seashells and starfish are nice decorations.
I also absolutely love that beautiful quilt on Mrs. Garrett's bed.
RetroGuy2000 07-18-2018, 12:48 AM And while we're on the subject of Mrs. Garrett's room (I just love the warmth and comfort of her room), I believe LMLD is the only episode where we see a nighttime scene taking place there, hence the chandelier lit (which only exists in these first 4 shows---maybe it was Miss Mahoney's and she ran off with it when they booted her? lol).

Like you, I love the warmth of Mrs. Garrett's room. The owl picture is very cool! I don't know that I ever saw it, or at least that it registered in my brain. And how symbolic: the owl hangs on the wall of the wise Mrs. Garrett.
It's shows like FOL and HotC which I think helped lead me down the path of being a teacher. Wise characters like Mrs. Garrett made me admire the value of an education, and the importance of books. There were other factors as well, but shows which showed the nobility of education, of the efforts of teachers, definitely left an impression on me.
RetroGuy2000 07-18-2018, 12:54 AM There are many odd things on the walls in season 1, but that penguin is definitely one of the oddest, lol.
Definitely!
Even more importantly, did you miss the rest of the posts I put on page 6 with 30 photos? lol
I had to hurry to go on a long hike today, but rest assured, I didn't miss the other post! I just had to wait to post them when I got back from the hike.
'80sSitcoms 07-18-2018, 12:55 AM But why would students be coming out of that building with their schoolbooks, if it were the administration building?
Maybe they have some sort of event or assembly there, who knows? But you have to understand, I was 4 or 5 years old when I was first exposed to this, so I figured it was some kind of "big campus building" if it weren't the cafeteria, lol (and even though it's a dorm, to my little tot self it didn't look like one, so that never crossed my mind).
Oh wait, wait, I think I've got it---a classroom building! That's what I must have been picturing all these years starting back then. Just a giant school building that could have classes, and administration offices if it wanted to.
I also love the Swiss windows; they make Mrs. G's bedroom feel both homey and elegant.
I feel the homey part too, but instead of "elegant", for me it's more of a "storybook" feel; like Snow White or Pinocchio, very old world and fairy tale-like. :)
That is VERY weird!
Right? Haha! I always think about it as soon as it happens when I watch the episode, but then I forget about it. Not anymore!
'80sSitcoms 07-18-2018, 01:01 AM Like you, I love the warmth of Mrs. Garrett's room.
Right? It's so warm and comforting and inviting and cozy. I just wish there had been a blizzard episode in season 1 where all the girls gathered with Mrs. Garrett in her room, with a warm fire waving and crackling in her fireplace, sipping hot cocoa* as they sit around in blankets and quilts and afghans and gaze out at the blue-gray evening's snowflakes falling outside those Swiss windows, with the gentle glow of the low-lit chandelier overhead; the snowflakes gently landing on the thick blanket of snow all the way up past to the sill, and the girls sharing stories about winters where they come from and what they would love to do if they could get out of the dorm in this snowstorm, while Mrs. Garrett waxes poetic about wintertimes back in Appleton, Wisconsin during her childhood and young adult years :)
*(I call it "hot chocolate", but "hot cocoa" sounds cozier here, heehee)
The owl picture is very cool! I don't know that I ever saw it, or at least that it registered in my brain.
Same here; and now I'm in love with it! I love green, and owls, and funky '70s kitsch, and here it is all rolled into one and hanging on a wall! :D
And how symbolic: the owl hangs on the wall of the wise Mrs. Garrett.
HA! Great connection! I wonder if the set decorator thought about that as well, or if it was a heck of a coincidence, lol.
How insightful, and how wonderful. :)
'80sSitcoms 07-18-2018, 01:04 AM I had to hurry to go on a long hike today...I just had to wait to post them when I got back from the hike.
A long hike, huh? After taking your boots and socks off, do your bare feet now smell like mystery meat?
HA!
:D
RetroGuy2000 07-18-2018, 01:24 AM Right? It's so warm and comforting and inviting and cozy. I just wish there had been a blizzard episode in season 1 where all the girls gathered with Mrs. Garrett in her room, with a warm fire waving and crackling in her fireplace, sipping hot cocoa* as they sit around in blankets and quilts and afghans and gaze out at the snowflakes falling outside those Swiss windows; those flakes gently landing on the thick blanket of snow all the way up past to the sill, and the girls sharing stories about winters where they come from and what they would love to do if they could get out of the dorm in this snowstorm :)
*(I call it "hot chocolate", but "hot cocoa" sounds cozier here, heehee)
You definitely know how to paint a homey picture... it's probably from watching all those '80s sitcoms where people were stranded in snowstorms, and had to entertain each other in flashbacks while it snowed outside. (I was watching, too!)
But it's very likely NBC's quota of blizzards was all used by Little House on the Prairie. I swear, that show had more blizzards than a Dairy Queen!
RetroGuy2000 07-18-2018, 01:25 AM A long hike, huh? After taking your boots and socks off, do your bare feet now smell like mystery meat?

:D
Why yes! Yes they do!!!
'80sSitcoms 07-18-2018, 01:30 AM You definitely know how to paint a homey picture...
Well as you were replying, I was expanding on the "painting" even more, lol.
it's probably from watching all those '80s sitcoms where people were stranded in snowstorms, and had to entertain each other in flashbacks while it snowed outside. (I was watching, too!)
The "shut-in" part, yes (227 did a really good one, and so did The Nanny in the '90s, at Fran's parents apartment, lol). The homey/storybook part, that's inspiration more from the storybook feel of C.S. Lewis's original The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe book, and the lovely animated piece The Snowman, and my own grandparents' house, things like that.
But it's very likely NBC's quota of blizzards was all used by Little House on the Prairie. I swear, that show had more blizzards than a Dairy Queen!
Ha! lol...oh, and of course FOL didn't do a season 1 blizzard because season 1 only existed in summer and spring respectively (4 shows, 9 shows), but boy that sure would've been nice had it been a possibility.
'80sSitcoms 07-18-2018, 01:31 AM Why yes! Yes they do!!!

Well give this man points for honesty! LOL!
And say, now I know where that line in your limerick came from! ;)
(I see this response to your stinky feet started a brand new page, so don't miss my reply containing more weighty substance at the bottom of page 7, LOL)
RetroGuy2000 07-18-2018, 01:58 AM Well as you were replying, I was expanding on the "painting" even more, lol.
I did see the Appleton part.
I also enjoyed the Chronicles of Narnia, and especially the cozy winter scenes in Mr. Tumnus's house.
Ha! lol...oh, and of course FOL didn't do a season 1 blizzard because season 1 only existed in summer and spring respectively (4 shows, 9 shows), but boy that sure would've been nice had it been a possibility.
FOL couldn't have done a blizzard episode in season one because it would have meant no short shorts.

RetroGuy2000 07-18-2018, 10:55 PM My favorite series of books growing up.
I loved them, too, until I turned twelve, and discovered Tolkien's LOTR, and, at 14, Williams' Dragonbone Chair series, which are the bestest books ever. Narnia will always have a special place in my heart, but once I became a teen, I definitely enjoyed slightly more mature fare.

Seeing the van on the set, with space all around it for trees, I wonder just why it was necessary to put the outdoor backdrop -- the one with the Eastland buildings -- approximately six inches behind John Lawler. Couldn't they have, you know, put the backdrop further back, where it would be less noticeable as a painting? Having it slightly out of the lenses' focal length would have helped.

Are we sure he's a Señor and not a Señorita? Not that guys can't wear pink, but that color is/was more associated with girls, at least in the 1970s and 1980s, when FOL was taped. And considering the main characters of this show are all female, I think we may have possibly jumped the gun in determining the sex of this particular tiger. Though I'm not stereotyping, and it takes all kinds, so no worries if he really is Señor!

He just looks like a male tiger to me, and that's how I've thought of him all these years. And you know teenage girls, they may have thought it was cute/silly to tie a pink ribbon around Mr. Big Furry Tiger, lol. Besides, it's not like he could take it off if he didn't like it! lol
Or maybe the pink was a subtle tribute to Snagglepuss, or The Pink Panther, lol.

All valid points, and definitely worthy of consideration. I won't gender shame this noble felid, who earned his stripes by keeping these girls safe at night, and watching over them all day, every day, for at least four years... while also propping up the career of a no less noble, although fallen-on-hard-times sombrero, which moved from room to room like the migrant worker it was. I salute them both!

'80sSitcoms 07-19-2018, 03:03 PM Nice find! But why are the chimes indoors?
Oh, you know what? Examining them closer, I don't think they are wind chimes. I think they might be more kitschy 1970s-era hanging decor? Mrs. Garrett also has a deep pink one as well, which the girls did not get.
But, if you'll look by Molly in the first pic, you will see a set of definite wind chimes. Maybe that's Mrs. Garrett's version of a burglar alarm on a windy night.
And now, a look at the season 1 classroom(s? lol):
Apparently Mr. Bradley wrote on the board in preparation for Mrs. Garrett's Sex Education class, as she obviously could not reach that high! lol
Also, do you recognize those windows? Notice how the right window's light is blacked out (like Blair's eye, lol) in the spring 1980 shows.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a bust sitting on the bookshelves on the right wall (stage left) at some point, too, though I couldn't tell you the episode.
Do we know who the busts are of? Since they are on the piano, I suspect they are composers, such as Bach, Pachelbel, Beethoven, Handel, or Mozart.

P.S. I absolutely LOVE that quilt Mrs. Garrett is working on. You can have the one on her bed, I want this one! :)

I thought the shot-haired dude was Beethoven, but Googling now I don't think so, although, from a distance it could possibly be Mozart, but the long "powdered wig"-looking one seems to be Bach:

'80sSitcoms 07-20-2018, 01:41 PM In RH they apparently wanted the hallway to be their dining room. Maybe not solely, but I never noticed before they have table and chairs and chandelier there!
Also, in the second photo showing the chandelier in full shot, you'll note from the funky green owl picture in Mrs. Garrett's room it's not just an owl picture, but apparently a likeness of "The Owl and the Pussycat" (or that could be just a coincidence, lol).

I had seen a chair in that area several times, and always wondered why they were blocking the hallway with a chair. How it's clear that area could be used for dining. And that explains the chandelier. This is great stuff!

'80sSitcoms 07-23-2018, 11:17 AM I don't know if there are some optical tricks going on in the 2nd photo or what, but man...look how huge that porch light looks in "Molly's Holiday"! ("Adoption" on left for comparison)
-
RetroGuy2000 07-23-2018, 11:39 AM It is just a slightly closer shot. You can tell because the lamp can be measured against the slats of the wall: four slat lengths between the base of the unit and the "roof" of the lamp (we can't see the top of the lamp in the second shot). Even the bike looks bigger in the second shot, and Mrs. G is also larger.
'80sSitcoms 07-23-2018, 12:01 PM The bike does look bigger; wow, that is odd. Even though Mrs. G is closer to the camera in the MH shot, the camera angle for some reason makes that lamp look huge---it looks about as big Mrs. G's whole head in the MH shot, whereas in A it appears to be smaller than her head with that distance between them. But that's just an optical illusion, for I see if you "dragged" the lamp over onto her head, they would be about the same size there as well, lol.

Now, that would have been interesting, especially since Molly says she was intimidated by Mindy. Uneasy bunk-mates! I'd hate to be in that bedroom overnight, Natalie tossing random coconuts during Molly's guitar practice!
It's funny that we see this style of desk set-up at least twice in the first season, but it doesn't appear to be used again: in Seasons 2-4, there's a single desk for four girls to share.

Well, that's not a desk though, but a fair-sized table.
RetroGuy2000 08-05-2018, 12:06 PM Well, that's not a desk though, but a fair-sized table.
"Fair-sized" table? It's got to be the same size as the S1 desks. If they had had two, back-to-back, they could have all studied at the same time. But one table for all four girls would have been hell, with only room for one girl to have one book open at a time.

Well it's not a desk, it's a table. They of course use it as a makeshift "desk" for studying and homework, but it is a table. The season 1 desks were actual desks, each less than half the size of the table in the picture (imagine a girl at each left and right end, facing each other, then saw the table in half; that's what I'm talkin' 'bout Willis, lol).
And we sometimes see about three of them sitting at the table in certain episodes, so they would each have a little room. In comparison, it looks like their table is about the equivalent of three desks.

No way. There's only room for two girls to sit side by side at that table, as shown in "Take My Finals, Please". Tootie and Natalie sit at the ends, with very little space. The table is so narrow that we actually see Tootie's elbows at each end of the table, when she puts her elbows on the table: ergo, the table is not much wider than shoulder width.
Now look at Molly's desk in the screenshot you helpfully took of the room that is potentially Nat and Mol's room. Molly is sitting at a desk with room for a person to sit next to her! And the desks are at least as wide as that table.

I'm not sure why you're disagreeing. Again, the desks are each less than half the length of the table. All four girls can sit at the table with two on one side, and two on the ends, or two on each side (I didn't say three girls could sit on one side of the table, I said sometimes three were sitting at the table; like with Jo and Blair on the long side, and Nat on the end). The point is that a season 1 desk is less than half the length of the table. If you look at Cindy and Sue Ann's desks, they can fit from the left end of the table to maybe around Jo's left elbow (on her right side, from our POV). So that table is about "three desks long" (when the desks are sideways, like in seaon 1).
The chair by Molly seems to be at the corner of her desk. We can see Natalie's side, and she has no extra room for anyone else beside her.

There's no room because she's sitting with her legs to the side. And we can see that even then, her left leg is still under the desk, meaning there's enough room for her to sit sideways and still have her foot under the desk.
The desks look foreshortened because of the angle, but we can see there's room for two chairs side by side, just by looking at Molly's side.

Grammar, Mr. '80s! Grammar! Where's your verb? :nonono:
But yes, you are right. It's odd how the globe bands change positions. Are the girls messing with the globe on their way up the stairs? One would think Miss Mahoney would have had a rule about the girls keeping their hands off the many globes of Eastland. Then again, she disappeared without explanation, so maybe the rules on globe-handling were loosened, with her departure. We certainly see Nancy and Tootie ignore those time-honored Eastland rules.

'80sSitcoms 12-21-2018, 01:38 AM Ya know one thing we never got in season 1? Any good nighttime scenes!
I mean, sure, there were a couple of group nighttime scenes in "The Facts of Love", but we never got any good one-on-one character scenes in the common room late at night. Like, late late, like when they would be in their jammies and gowns.
Now, we did get a good late night (or night, anyway) scene in "Emily Dickinson", where Tootie and Blair are in PJs (I think they both are; I think Tootie must've been, as she was brushing her teeth), but that's about all that I'm recalling right now.
A house-like dorm with 7 teenage and prepubescent girls, and a housemother, and no jammies/gowns nighttime character scenes in the common room? Or Mrs. Garrett's room? Or in the girls' rooms? ("ED" notwithstanding)...What gives?

That's a good observation. Perhaps if the season had been longer, we would have seen some Common Room night-time hi-jinx. Like maybe the girls gathered around the TV, bowls of popcorn in their laps, watching a scary movie. That could have made a nice Halloween episode!
Or how about an episode where Mr. Bradley and Miss Mahoney jimmy the door to get the textbook she needs for class in the morning, and Mrs. Garrett almost hits Mr. Bradley with a baseball bat, mistaking him for a burglar, as she comes out of her room in her nightgown and bunny slippers?
Or an episode where Nancy agrees to meet Roger after hours, so she sneaks downstairs, but Natalie and Cindy are getting snacks in the kitchen? Fearful she'll be discovered, Nancy hides behind the furniture, when she overhears Miss Mahoney and Mr. Bradley coming in from the PTA meeting, talking about the closing of a nearby school. Nancy thinks they're talking about Eastland, and decides she and the other girls have to fight the closure.
Or how about an episode where Blair and Sue Ann go down to the basement to get the school yearbook, to settle a bet on who's kissed more boys, and accidentally get locked in the basement overnight?
Lorimar Television 12-21-2018, 02:53 AM I dont wanna spoil anything but there was a cold open written in the script section that would've given us a night moment.

Also: I think Tootie's apple pajamas should be hanging in the Smithsonian

Haha! I forgot about that one: "Make it a round trip, Lorsie"*
Well, there was also the slug-out "flashbacks count, or don't?" fight where you were Cindy, but I mean to have you as Sue Ann, lol...but yeah, it fits that you're often the youngest .
*(it was "Lorimar" in the published cartoon panel, but now we can use "Lorsie" to substitute "Tootie", lol)

Lorsie can't be trusted
My heart feels like it's busted
Boy, am I disgusted
Lorimar and I will sing the blues...

And, taking a cue from "Running", I was just thinking how, if our series "Night Owls" were really a show  , there could be an episode called "Writing" or "PhotoShopping" where someone pits you and I against each other in nearly-friendship-ruining competition!

Lorsie, have you ever seen that one "Facts" documentary? :
Margie Peters: "No one wears. Skates. In. The House."
(or maybe it was Linda Marsh...it was one of those two, lol)

Lol, well hey, ya can't fault me for askin'---there's, like, 5* different "Facts" docus out there! Wasn't sure how many you'd seen!

Oh I don't think so, Lorsie---I've seen every "Facts" documentary there's been, and I only recall Ms. Marsh-or-Peters being in just that one!

*(this is fairly accurate, no "Littlefielding" here! )
I count seven (appropriately, enough!):
The Biography Channel: Facts of Life (2005)
The Truth Behind the Sitcom Scandals 5 (2000)
E! True Hollywood Story: The Facts of Life Girls (1999)
After Facts (2006)
Remembering The Facts of Life (2006)
Cast Confessions: The Facts of Life (2009)
...And then Nancy McKeon's Biography, which I definitely consider a FOL documentary.

Really? Could’ve sworn she was in Atleast 2
'80sSitcoms 12-27-2018, 12:23 PM ^---Well, you could be right, I just don't recall her in any others. She made such an impression in that one!
'80sSitcoms 12-27-2018, 12:45 PM And the desks are at least as wide as that table.
Regarding page 9, the seasons 2-4 table is definitely longer than the season 1 desks. If you put one desk beside the table, the table would be longer. If you put both season 1 desks end to end, they would be more longer than the table than shorter (perhaps that's where our disconnect was occurring in our debate). But yeah, the width is close (I came across that old argument when doing research, lol). Here's a "blueprint" (ha) I've come up with showing if you essentially put both desks, paired up as they are on the season 1 sets, beside the seasons 2-4 table (exact measurements notwithstanding, lol).

'80sSitcoms 12-27-2018, 12:49 PM Did you ever notice in Mrs. Garrett's Sex Ed class, the girls are seated the youngest in the front row, the eldest in the 2nd row, and the "buddies forever" in the 3rd row? :) (ignore the arrow, it was pointing out one of the ubiquitous globes in an earlier post  )
And maybe one of the other girls is Nina Branch!
-
'80sSitcoms 12-27-2018, 12:51 PM Actually, discussing nighttime scenes, all of LMLD takes place at night! (not late night, but still)
-
'80sSitcoms 12-27-2018, 12:55 PM And check out the "competition cafeteria"---Table Left is "Team Sue Ann", Table Right is "Team Cindy"! Like in "Running"!

'80sSitcoms 12-27-2018, 04:25 PM And we used to have a suitcase that looked similar! It was an old one that my sister and I would use when we'd go stay with our grandparents. :)

LOL!
'80sSitcoms 01-10-2019, 05:48 PM New discovery!
For a limited time only!
Check it out, there's some kind of stuffed bear-wearing-clothes thing on the common room stairs landing. It's there in all 4 Mahoney shows, and then it vanishes, never to be seen again (perhaps Miss Mahoney took it with her when she left? lol)
-
'80sSitcoms 01-10-2019, 05:53 PM I'm pretty sure I've seen a bust sitting on the bookshelves on the right wall (stage left) at some point, too, though I couldn't tell you the episode.
Yes! Retro, you're right! The "alternate piano bust", the one with the long hair, Bach, is indeed a bust on the big book display case to the right of Mrs. Garrett's room! I think I first noticed it in "Overachieving", and here it is in "The Facts of  ":

Cool find! So she took the bear, the clock, and the original tan globe. Hmmm...

Only fair compensation for the hair-don'ts they made her wear!
Lorimar Television 01-10-2019, 11:05 PM Nice finds
valentina warner 03-03-2020, 07:34 PM  True, first the set dressing exodus, and then the girls!
And you know, if anyone had asked me what color the dorm piano was, I would have said "brown".
But it's not---it's, like, "cream"! (all the way through to "Dope")
I love that scene on 'Rough Housing': MRS G straightening BLAIR out hee hee!
80s Dude 03-04-2020, 10:10 AM Nicely spotted!
I wonder why any of the students planned to take it with them during the break? It was supposed to be a short break, and only Blair was taking (what seemed like) the majority of her belongings.
Do we assume the sombrero was Blair's?
I was thinking that the Sombrero was Mr. Bradley's and was going to take it on his tropical vacation in MH, but forgot it because he was so concerned about Molly's situation.

I'm not sure a sombrero will look good in Hawaii... then again, the cowboy outfit he wears in the episode also isn't appropriate, either, so there you go. Sombrero it is.

I thought the sombrero would fit would have fit well with his cowboy outfit. Plus he always needs an excuse to stop by the girls house/dorm.
RetroGuy2000 03-04-2020, 04:45 PM I thought the sombrero would fit would have fit well with his cowboy outfit. Plus he always needs an excuse to stop by the girls house/dorm.
"I had to pick up my sombrero to go with my cowboy outfit on my way to Club Med in Hawaii."
No wonder he came back: Club Med wouldn't let him in!
'80sSitcoms 03-04-2020, 05:24 PM Nope, the sombrero is NOT Mr. Bradley's. (Retro, I can't believe you would support that!!) It is the girls'. It's part of what makes "their room" (though it always changes, lol) so special; all the girls' things. :loveya: (in my faniverse there are none of "Mr. Bradley's things" in the girls' rooms. That's just too odd for me, lol)
And it's not really a "cowboy" outfit, but a western one; kinda "urban cowboy" if you want.
