View Full Version : (Alternate) Schedule for my MeTV-like digital subchannel (a "what if")

A few years ago, I posted a schedule for a digital subchannel similar to MeTV and AntennaTV that run classic TV shows, which had many revision. However, I didn't know about the Syndication Exclusivity law, which is very apparent since no shows (as far as I know) currently air on more than one broadcast TV station, including subchannels. The schedule I wrote in my first thread for this channel is what I would air if I ran it and could air any show. Eventually, this schedule may look like this, but now I am posting what would air if/when the network is just starting out.

Since MeTV has two sister networks (Heroes & Icons and Decades), I am writing this as if the network were a sister network to AntennaTV, which is more logical since MeTV has two sister networks and AntennaTV only has one now (which maily airs movies instead of classic TV series). Also, this would help give access to AntennaTV's library of shows, adding shows no longer airing on AntennaTV (much like Decades) as well as shows on the back burner of their schedule (currently airing overnight) that would be more likely to get dropped. The rest consists of shows not airing on any other subchannel or no longer airing on these networks. Here is what I have so far:

Monday-Friday:
6:00am Square Pegs (Monday)
Angie (Tuesday)
On Our Own (a short-lived 1977-78 sitcom, Wednesday)
Flo (a spin off of Alice, Thursday)
The Bad News Bears (Friday)

6:30am Super Friends
7:00am The Flintstones
7:30am Garfield & Friends
8:00am Captain Kangaroo (E/I) It has been reported that the majority of episodes have been wiped, or destroyed (especially the early B&W episodes), but I do know that MANY episodes aired on PBS during the mid-to-late 1980's; though nearly all of the PBS airings were from the mid-70's onward.

9:00am The Patty Duke Show
9:30am The Honeymooners
10:00am The Rockford Files
11:00am The Waltons
12:00noon Happy Days
12:30pm Happy Days
1:00pm Laverne & Shirley
1:30pm Mork & Mindy
2:00pm Eight is Enough
3:00pm Family Matters
3:30pm Sabrina the Teenage Witch
4:00pm 7th Heaven
5:00pm 7th Heaven
6:00pm Head of the Class
6:30pm Silver Spoons
7:00pm One Day At a Time
7:30pm Step By Step
8:00pm Full House
8:30pm Who's the Boss?
9:00pm The Golden Girls
9:30pm Cheers
10:00pm Cheers
10:30pm Cheers
11:00pm Dallas (the classic 1978-91 run)
12:00 midnight Ryan's Hope
12:30am Ryan's Hope

Fun & Games Overnight:
1:00am Match Game PM (The Daytime run currently airs on Buzzr)
1:30am The Price is Right:
CBS Daytime, 1972-75 (Monday-Thursday)
Syndicated Prime-Time 1972-80 (Friday) Due to the abundance of fur coats given away on this version, as per Bob Barker's wishes, there will only be enough for a once a week airing (approx 40 of the 240 episodes in the 70's nighttime shows had no furs given away). This was hosted by Dennis James (from 1972-1977) and Bob Barker (1977-1980).

2:00am The Price is Right (CBS Daytime; September 1975, November 1975-present)
3:00am Wheel of Fortune (1983-present Syndicated Prime Time run)
3:30am Wheel of Fortune (ditto)
4:00am Jeopardy! (1984-present Syndicated Prime Time run)
4:30am Jeopardy! (ditto)

Saturday:
6:00am H.R. Pufnstuf (a classic Sid & Marty Krofft show)

7:30am Speed Buggy
8:00am The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse/Heckle & Jeckle (1979-82 cartoon)

6:30am The New Adventures of Batman (1977-80 run, yes with Bat-Mite!)
7:00am Totally Tooned In (This is a collection of cartoons released by Columbia Pictures; such as Mr. Magoo, The Fox and the Crow, Krazy Kat, Scrappy, and Gerald McBoing Boing. The show aired on AntennaTV a few years ago, hence my parterning this network with their owners!) ;)

8:00am The New Scooby Doo Movies (1972-74 run, where Scooby and the gang co-star with animated versions of well-known celebrities from the time, such as Don Knotts, Sandy Duncan, Batman and Robin, The Harlem Globetrotters, Sonny and Cher, "Mama" Cass Elliot, Dick Van Dyke, and Jonathan Winters!)

Saturday & Sunday:
9:00am Sparks (E/I) This is a Sci-Fi series about time travel produced for WRAL-TV 5, a local TV station in Raleigh, NC. Here's more about the series:

11:30am The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show (This will include the cartoon from the 1983-86 Saturday Morning run & numerous Prime-Time TV specials from over the years! The Holiday-themed cartoon specials, however, will not be included in this run.)

1:00pm The Best of American Bandstand
2:00pm Sports Classics (4 full hours of classic sports events from over the years!)

In addition to gaining access to Antenna TV's TV show library, partnering with them as a sister network (much like Decades is owned by CBS and MeTV's owner Weigel) would help get a huge boost in gaining affiliates by adding this subchannel to Tribune-owned TV stations (Tribune owns Antenna TV as well as This TV). For example:

.1 Main channel
.2 Antenna TV
.3 My proposed subchannel
.4 This TV

Also, since Sparks (which airs on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9:00am) was produced by WRAL-TV 5 in Raleigh, which is owned by Capitol Broadcasting), this subchannel logically would be added by the two Capitol Broadcasting owned TV stations; WRAL-TV 5 and WILM-TV 10 in Wilmington, NC.

Just wanted to remind everyone again that this is not an actual network, only a "what if" schedule proposal of what I would do it this was real! ;)

Pretaining to the first thing I bolded, aren't some shows on different networks?
Second, can't you show The Price Is Right but just edit out anything pretaining to fur?

Good question! First of all, some of the shows are currently airing on AntennaTV (such as Head of the Class, Silver Spoons, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch), but are on the back burner since these shows are currently airing late at night, and would be more likely to get dropped from the schedule. In fact, Sabrina is getting dropped from AntennaTV in mid-July when Archie Bunker's Place begins it's run there. Some of the shows on my schedule air on cable TV networks, but cable doesn't count in terms of Syndication Exclusivity.

As for furs on The Price is Right, simply cutting out furs on shows that gave them away would make the shows choppy and inconsistent since TPIR is a game show, and the furs given away are part of the show's continuity.

Hope this helps! :)

Exclusivity does apply, but when the contract expires, the channel that had the contract often still retains the show. Case in point, our local Tribune-owned station had an exclusive on Andy Griffith Show. That contract evidently expired, but they still show TAGS. When it expired, the local MeTV affiliate then picked up TAGS on MeTV. Now it's shown by both.

More than likely, that because the TV station has the show grandfathered in.

It does. I will say that why would you want to watch Head of The Class or any other vintage show, when you can watch Reba 8 times a day??

That's true about The Price is Right but something is better than nothing.

This is a list of specials I would run during the Christmas season. I posted this before on my original subchannel thread, but many of the videos in my original post have been deleted from YouTube. Anyway, here they are again:

It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown. This is a straight-to-video cartoon from 1992, not sure if it ever actually aired on TV or not:
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x56pskl

A Garfield Christmas Special:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke6aKPYfGFk

Raggedy Ann & Andy in The Great Santa Claus Caper. Makes me REALLY feel old when no one knows what Gloopstick is! ;)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3d9yTsh92y4

The Tiny Tree:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11A7Y1cq0kE

Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uL65d-hT8U8 (CLIP)

I also would include Rankin-Bass specials that no only air on broadcast TV (only Rudolph, Frosty, and Santa Claus is Comin' to Town currently air) (though some air on cable via Freeform), such as:

Frosty's Winter Wonderland:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmFUJS6uEEw

Twas the Night Before Christmas:
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3ga10f

Pinocchio's Christmas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DR1koNvrXo (CLIP)

The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUFexTwgE7U (CLIP)

Rudolph & Frosty's Christmas in July
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5H3b4u4rESE (CLIP)

Enjoy these videos, and MERRY "CHRISTMAS IN JULY"! :)

Saturday & Sunday:
12:00noon The Best of American Bandstand
1:00pm The Best of American Bandstand

When VH1 ran The Best of American Bandstand in the mid-to-late 90's, the episodes were aired in edited 30 minute installments instead of an uncut full hour as each episode originally aired. I have no idea if this was due to music clearances, or if VH1 simply wanted to air these episodes in a half-hour format.
If the former is true, should I go the safe route and air the 30 minute edits of these shows?
