Art Carney & Audrey Meadows Sketch:

This was filmed on the March 13, 1954 edition of the Jackie Gleason Show. At a fancy room in a house, a producer (played by George Petrie) is pacing back and forth. The guy (who speaks with an English accent) says to the radio engineer that is almost time for Prince and Pickadilly to go on the air. Cecil & Cybil are in their dressing rooms and are told that they have two minutes until airtime. Cybil (played by Audrey Meadows) comes out and calls for Cecil (played by Art Carney) to come out. Cybil speaks with an English accent and so does Cecil. Cecil is wearing a smoking jacket with fake teeth and Cybil is wearing a fancy gown.

They both sit down for breakfast. The table has a BBC microphone on it. Cybil blames Cecil for his behavior at Lady Kramden’s dinner party last night. (Gee, I wonder where they got THAT name?) Cecil fell asleep at the dinner table with his head in the mashed potatoes. They are told by the producer that they have two seconds to go on the air (even though it was more than that.) They are on the air. They introduce themselves to the audience. Cybil asks Cecil if he wants to go for a walk in the garden after breakfast. Cecil: “Get lost in the fog?” Cybil then asks Cecil for some Chumley Big Boo Young. Cybil says to the viewers that you can start the day off right with a cup of Chumley Big Boo Young. Cecil: “Especially if you add Brandy.” Cybil elbows Cecil when he says that. Cecil: “Chumley comes in four forms. The powder, the cube, and um, oh yes in the bag.” Cybil pours some Chumley for Cecil. Cecil puts a monocle on when he tries to eat the Chumley like its soup. The monocle falls off and into the soup and Cecil & Cybil don’t know it until he realizes that it is gone. He tries to look for it while Cybil plugs Chumley some more. Cybil notices that he is trying to find it but says for him to not worry and to read what is new in the paper. Cecil reads an article about the annual fox hunt in Suset begins. Cecil doesn’t want to go because he thinks that they are terrible. He recalls last year when a very big dog tried to eat and kill a fox only for that fox to kill eight of the dogs.

Cecil then sees his monocle in his Chumley but he doesn’t realize it. Cecil: “Something in my Chumley is staring back at me.” Cybil then reads another article in the paper about Winston Churchill making another trip to the USA because Winston is out of cigars. Ha! Cecil says that he ran into someone last night in Savoy. When he tries to remember who he ran into, he forgets for a few seconds but then he remembers that he ran into Lord Clydedale, who was bitten by Titsy flay in Africa. Lord Clydedale has been suffering from sleeping sickness for the past twenty years but was elected to Parliament. Cybil says that yesterday she ran into Lady Jennifer. She has been in a rut. She ran off with her butler. The butler ran off the week after. She ran after her gardener. The gardener ran off a month after that. Finally, she ran off with her chauffer. The chauffer ran off a week after that. Cybil: “She can’t seem to hold on to her help.” Cecil says that her husband should have been suspicious after they hired that “good looking” chauffer because they have no car. Ha! Cecil is trying to remember where his monocle is.

Cybil says it is time for a message from one of their sponsors. The sponsor is Lovey Duvey Soap. Cybil: “The soap that brings romance. Isn’t that right Cecil?” Cecil: “You are so right. A recent survey says that 9 out of 10 girls found out after taking Lovey Duvey soap they became engaged the very next day. It was amazing even though they were already married.” Cybil: “Lovey Duvey soap comes in three sizes. Small, medium and large.” Cecil: “Not to forget the economy 50 pound cake.” Cybil: “How do you lift it?” Cecil: “You don’t. You get wet all over and rub against it.” Cybil: “If you would like a free sample of Lovey Duvey soap…” Cecil: “In London, Weston 3-2000.” Cybil: “In New Tropshere Bigelow 2-4000.” Those were phone numbers back then. Cecil: “I ran into Lord Tuffley the other day. In France, he lost 250 pounds. Not by gambling but his wife falling overboard.” In England, wouldn’t pounds be money and stones be weight? Cybil: “He must have been heartbroken.” Cecil: “He was. She wasn’t insured.” Ha! Cecil wonders where his monocle is. He takes another spoonful of Chumley and of course the monocle is supposedly swallowed. He says to Cybil that he found it. Cybil: “Cheerio.” Cecil: “Ta-ta!” That’s the end of that sketch. I think that this sketch would have been good if it was remade in the 1960s with Shelia MacRae as Cybil. Shelia was born in England.

Ralph Kramden And Ed Norton Old Gold Commercial

This commercial aired during the 6/1/57 episode of the Jackie Gleason Show which had the 1957 version of “Manager of The Baseball Team.” Due to the cigarette ban by the FCC, cigarette commercials are not seen on TV. In this commercial, “Ralph” (actually a bus driver’s hat in a black box) is driving an apparently invisible bus down the street. “Ed” (actually his hat) calls “Ralph” to come back. “Ralph” hears Norton and backs up does but accidentally puts his back axle on top of Ed’s head. Unless the streets on New York were VERY quiet during the day, there is no way Ralph would be able to hear Ed. Also, wouldn’t Ed get hurt if a bus’ wheel was on his head? (The commercial showed his hat being squished) “Ralph” wonders where “Ed” is. “Ed”: “Down here in the manhole. Where do you think I would be? Would you move your bus? I am under the axle.” “Ralph” apologizes and moves his bus. “Ed” (who is apparently a very fast walker) comes up to “Ralph” and asks “Ralph” for a cigarette. So “Ralph” gets mad. “Ed”: “You go nowhere without Old Gold Filters.” They plug Old Gold. An image of the old Old Gold cigarette box and a drawing of a cigarette are shown. “Ed”: “I wouldn’t borrow a smoke from no pasronage (patronage) unless they were smoking Old Gold. How is that Ralph? Haha!” “Ralph”: “Yeah, well I have to go.” “Ralph” leaves. “Ed Norton” doesn’t go with him. Apparently despite supposedly being face to face with “Ralph”, “Ed” was on the outside of the bus. “Ed” (to the people down in the manhole): “The best taste yet in a filter cigarette.” (echoing): “Coming right down.” The words “the best taste yet in a filter cigarette” are shown on the screen in a primitive graphic. That’s the end.
