Watching this episode again I found it peculiar that is starts with a flash back scene in which Miss Kraus and Benson are telling Denise all the problems Benson had when he bought his new condo as if Denise was unaware, yet during the episode Denise was fully aware of the problems Benson had with the purchase and work not getting done on the condo as promised. In fact at the end of the episode Denise and Pete went to the condo to help Benson with the others in his scheme to get the Condo management to see the light and finish the work on Benson's condo!

I know, the writing for this show often had me confused. It's like nobody could remember anything written before. The governor delivers a baby in season 1 ("Snowbound"), but when Denise goes into labor, he acts like he's never seen a birth. Clayton mentions a brother, sister and niece, but in the episodes with his parents, he's an only child (and then there's his "secret" live-in girlfriend, who's mentioned in one season 7 episode, then never again)...The best one was Pete and Denise announcing that they were going to have a baby girl--who turned out (with no explanation) to be Pete Jr.!

i think they just let the different groups of writers just make up background information at will and never cared to check anything - and I'm pretty sure that "Sit Ubu Sit" dog was in charge of continuity.

Unfortunately, yes. I even mentioned one to Rene Auberjonois on Twitter: Clayton saying he doesn't know how to show affection to a dog in season 6, when a season or two earlier, he was cuddling a skunk.

Dogs are friendly animals, but a skunk seems to fit Clayton's personality.

True...He told Benson he was more of a cat person, too. :>)
