Freeform is calling it a day with "Famous in Love". The Disney-owned younger-skewing cable network has opted to cancel the Bella Thorne starrer from "Pretty Little Liars" showrunner I. Marlene King after two seasons.

The show's May 30 season-ender now serves as the series finale.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Freeform initially wanted to do a third season of the expensive series from producers Warner Horizon Scripted Television but asked streaming partner Hulu — which has SVOD rights to the drama — for a larger contribution.

Sources say Hulu has yet to receive a formal proposal from Freeform to save "Famous in Love", which saw its same-day viewership sink. Season two averaged 254,000 total viewers, down from 330,000 in its freshman run.

Sources also say news of the cancellation was considered a relief for many members of the production. Star Thorne and showrunner King are said to have clashed on multiple occasions, with the actress exhibiting what sources described as "diva-like behavior" on set.

Sources note Thorne actively wanted off of "Famous in Love", with the actress and social media star having refused to participate in Freeform-organized live-tweets during its second season.

Freeform officially cancels Bella Thorne's Famous in Love (https://variety.com/2018/tv/news/famous-in-love-canceled-freeform-1202858826/)

The drama starring Thorne about a college student who gets her big break in a Hollywood blockbuster was one of Freeform's lowest-rated series. Freeform's cancelation comes three days after The Hollywood Reporter reported the cancelation (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/famous-love-canceled-2-seasons-freeform-1123477), citing the high costs and Hulu opting not to pay more for Season 3 -- plus an alleged feud between showrunner I. Marlene King and Thorne, who was described as having "diva-like behavior" on set. Both Freeform and King denied the show was canceled (https://deadline.com/2018/06/famous-in-love-renwed-canceled-freeform-marlene-king-season-3-1202417818/), and Thorne expressed shock that she wasn't told of the cancelation in advance. King also denied any feud with Thorne as she rallied fans to push Freeform to order a Season 3 renewal. As recently as yesterday, King had high hopes for a renewal. "We have such great story planned for season 3 (https://twitter.com/imarleneking/status/1012562586359873536). Fingers crossed," King tweeted. Freeform released a statement confirming the cancelation: “We are proud to have had the opportunity to air Famous In Love. After many discussions with our partners at Warner Horizon, we have made the difficult decision not to renew the show for a third season. We want to thank our colleagues at Warner Horizon and our incredible producers, writers, cast and crew, especially Marlene King, for their creativity, hard work and dedication.” Thorne has yet to respond to the cancelation news.
