I saw Elizabeth Mcrae sp? on a black and white Gunsmoke episode and her speech if I recall was somewhat the same.

She was born where my father was, and grew up there, but I have never heard anyone in the south speak like that.

She is from South Carolina and is probably her real voice, maybe slightly exaggerated. While people from North Carolina are Southern of course, and have a drawl (and really we all have accents) people from North Carolina have a particular sound. Of course Andy Griffith has that sound.

There are videos of a one Charles Jenkins who was a Sargeant in the US Army who defected to North Korea. Listen to him and hear a North Carolina accent. It’s different than someone from Mississippi or Arkansas or Texas.

McRae was a sexy woman. Her voice was hers.

Her real voice wasn't anywhere near that extreme. Obviously that voice was tried and they wanted her to do it that way. I think it worked for the character. Gomer was more or less a cartoonish character and to have him mixed with someone like her was a good match. They were a fun couple.

Jim Nabors admitted that he merely exaggerated his Alabama accent for Gomer so it makes sense that they'd have had her exaggerate her North Carolina one for Lou Ann! At least it wasn't a complete parody of someone NOT from the South attempting to do an accent (e.g. Shirley Mitchell from Toledo, Ohio doing that cringeworthy deep-fried deal as Cousin Mae on 'Petticoat Junction').

Her accent doesn't bother me but then again I'm from the south. I don't really dig those New Jersey accents, like the mobsters use.

She was in the "Big Brother" episode on the Andy Griffith show. I was never too concerned with her voice considering what she looked like.
