View Full Version : We have upgraded our forum software and moved to a new server

Sorry for the downtime. It took a little longer than expected.

We have been moved to a brand new, more powerful server. This should make things run faster.

We have upgraded our forum software from vBulletin 3.5 to 3.8.11 . This will allow us to add some new features (such as a mobile theme) going forward. GIF and PNG images should now work in the photo galleries.

We will soon be switching everything over from http to https to make things even more secure.

There is a lot new in this version, so there will probably be some bugs. We haven't gone through all of the options yet, so there will probably still be some changes. If you come across any major problems or if something doesn't look like it did before, please let us know. It's still a work in progress.

You might need to clear your cache and temporary files in your browser to get the old graphics to work.

You might want to visit the User CP to change any of your settings:

I like some of the new features to be honest.

Yes, I noticed this morning it was running very slow . I was so happy to have S.O. back and I figured just that , it will take some time to get it completely perfected, so I just waited it out !;) Just came back on a little while ago and now it is running like a charm. Very fast!:) We're cooking now!! ;):wave:

I did notice its slower now but thank you TJ for not taking us to something worse!!

We will soon be switching everything over from http to https to make things even more secure.Yes but there is NO NEED to block HTTP sessions TJ . THIS SITE DOESNT NEED FORCED SSL!!

cellar.org and hipforums.com/forum both have SSL but they dont block HTTP traffic......

davidicke.com/forum does have forced SSL but he has "No browser left behind" so any browser can connect.......

Blocking HTTP sessions will only make it harder for those of us on older browsers or non standard browers to get here directly..... (W/o using a proxy to get here for example)

There is NO REASON to force SSL on this site.... NOTHING MORE UNSECURE NOW THAN THERE EVER WAS..... THIS IS THE INTERNET!! (The only difference now is control)

TJ
06-15-2018, 04:56 PM
I don't know if it will block http requests, but it may re-direct to the https pages. I will have to see how it works once it's installed. This is the future because people are big on security.

Google is going to start marking all http pages as insecure in October, so you are probably going to see the remaining sites change to https. Google is forcing their hands. It's time to update your browser because you can't expect sites to support those types of browsers which are used in very limited numbers.

If you live in the UK, then you are part of the GDPR. If you are getting those types of popups or consent banners on other sites continually, then you probably don't have cookies enabled. You can read up about it here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Data_Protection_Regulation

I see DATABASE THREAD TRACKING is enabled..... (I mark the bases read before I logout now :))

Thanx TJ for your hard work buddy :)

This was enabled by default on the new version.

Database Read Marking Limit
The amount of time in days to store the thread and forum read times. All threads or forums without posts in this many days will be considered read.

With "database read marking", the unread markers on threads and forums are persistent across forum sessions. If a user does not read a thread that is marked as unread, then that thread will remain unread every time the user visits the forum.

This setting allows you to force unread markers to switch to "read" after a so many days. This would be the amount of time after which the user probably has no interest in reading that thread and therefore does not need to know that it contains unread posts.

It's set to 14 days. The number can be changed.

TJ
06-18-2018, 06:28 PM
Why can I see a thread made by someone I have on ignore? Shouldn't it be so I can't see any threads by anyone on my ignore list? Thanks.

I don't know if anything was changed in this version. Maybe you can still see the threads, but not the individual posts within a thread. If you are ignoring a complete thread, you are losing out on reading anybody else's posts.

TJ
06-18-2018, 06:30 PM
About your own posts not displaying in the New Posts section, I think that's the default in this version. It marks it as read in the database and assumes you have already read it. Your new posts will still show up to other people. If you are visiting every day, it would be better to use View Today's Active Threads because it includes everything.

Svenfan1234
06-18-2018, 06:51 PM

Previously I didn't see the threads made by posters on my ignore list, but now I do. I hope that can be changed so I don't see it because there are about two posters in my ignore list and reasons why they are, and I'd rather not see their threads. idk if you can change it or not. If not, it's OK, I preferred it the other way.

These are links by VigLink (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VigLink). There's a plugin for it, so we are testing it out.

It highlights and links certain keywords like Amazon.com and iTunes. If somebody posts a link to a DVD, book or other product from Amazon, Walmart or any other from a list of 65,000 merchants, it changes it to an affiliate link. We would get the commissions on any purchases made through the links.

If you find it to be too annoying, it can be turned off in the User CP.

I don't think the friends list changes anything. It's just a list to easily find friends profiles in one area. It doesn't seem to send out any more e-mails. It's actually not a new feature. They called it a buddy list before.

I've noticed this updated site puts more cache (probably for tracking) on the computer, than the "old" site did. I'd advise frequently clearing your history, which will keep it clean.

TJ
06-21-2018, 05:02 PM
It would be a good idea also to clear your cache and temporary internet files if you aren't seeing the TV new post icons on the main page. When they did the upgrade, they uploaded new graphics. I had to re-upload the old ones.

stevea
06-21-2018, 05:36 PM
For those with a Mac, clearing history will clear the cache and cookies. When you use the "today" option when clearing history, you will retain cookies for frequently visited sites (such as Sitcoms, or Banks), since you went there yesterday and days previous. But, all cache is cleared, which is where a lot of the tracker stuff is (like google).

I've been experimenting with the new Groups feature, and created a group for The Facts of Life (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/group.php?groupid=1). The Group feature is very neat, but there are some strange restrictions: no 'attachment' feature, so I can't attach a PDF, only insert an image. No way of pinning the welcome message to the top of the group, and the text on the messages is very small.

Despite these small drawbacks, I absolutely love the new feature!

Thanks for checking, TJ. I did find a work-around for adding a PDF attachment: I can add it as an attachment on the main forum, then once that post is saved, I can copy that link and use that link in the forum. It's not a great solution, but it will work okay for my needs.

If it's possible to make the default text larger on the group messages, that would be great; it's just harder for some readers to see.

The Groups are a nice addition, and I can see many cool uses for them. Thanks for continuing to support and upgrade the site.

This has happened to me about 4 times already. I'm logged in on the message boards but when I go to the photo galleries I'm not logged in. I have to come back here and log out and log back in to fix it.

I've noticed this also. It seems to logout people quicker than the old version. The timeout is set to 60 minutes. I really don't want to mess with the cookie settings, so hopefully it will work itself out. I would suggest clearing your cookies and temporary files to see if that helps. The forums and photo galleries both use the same registration system, so I'm not sure what's causing the conflict.

I don't see any options to enable notifications for accepted friend requests.

You can turn off the e-mail notifications for friend requests in the User CP - http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/profile.php?do=editoptions

How about the opposite question. If I want to delete a friend, do they get a notification if I do ("Hey, that rat bastard opus abandoned you") or do I just quietly disappear from their list?

It could be due to the browser you are using.

TJ
07-04-2018, 02:09 PM
People tend to notice and complain only when things are slower. 99% of the time it seems to be running great. Even the largest sites like Yahoo, Google and Facebook face some sluggishness and downtime.

Everything about this new server should be better. Faster processor, more memory, more storage space, better security, automated backups, disaster recovery, faster ping times, quicker internet response times from coast to coast and even internationally as well, etc. It still may not be optimized as far as the PHP and MYSQL settings, but the slowdowns are not because of the software itself.

I have no idea what would be causing it be slower at 7-8AM on an American holiday when most people are sleeping. Maybe there were a lot search engine spiders on at the time because I can't imagine there were that many humans on at that hour.

I'm not really too keen on this new "friends" option here, I think it's unnecessary and has potential to cause problems. Sometimes I think people send friend requests not so much because they really want to be your friend, but because they want to appear popular and see how many names they can collect on their friend list.

And what happened to the privacy settings option? I wanted to adjust a few things but the privacy settings option is gone and replaced with "customize profile".

Well the other server had a buddy list and when the new friend list came up all my old buddy list was transferred over except I had to refriend them. The problem is none of them post here anymore. Unfortunately we can't please everybody with all the options. Some are customizable and are able to be turned on/off by members, others are not. The friends list is not something that can be turned on/off by member. I felt like it was worth upgrading the software since we hadn't made any major changes in a number of years. There's probably more options than what we would ever use.

The search function is probably one of the culprits. The minimum time between searches has been changed to 30 seconds. We may turn off the searches for guests, but I'd prefer not to do that.

We're also going to start block some search engine spiders like Baidu, since we don't get any Chinese traffic.

About a week ago the archives section changed. (This place: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/archive/index.php)

It used to display 250 threads per page when looking at a forum and 250 posts per page when viewing a thread. Now it's down to 50. If this was done for some efficiency reason then I won't complain but if it was just some random update it may be worth reverting to the old way.

It was really helpful when looking for a specific thread or post at high speed using the ctrl-f search because there was so much on one page.

In the big scheme of things it's not important but I'm curious why it was changed.

We are continuing to tweak the settings. Hopefully we will hit the sweet spot one of these times where everything runs smoothly all day. I think there weren't enough connections being allowed because it was taking sometimes 5-10 seconds or longer just to make the initial connection. The connections have been raised and the timeouts increased.

I wasn't sure if anybody was even using the Archives section. That's really more for search engine purposes. I tried various things to get the server load lower. It wouldn't be a problem to raise it back to 250.

The font size of the social group messages has been increased. It could be lowered a bit if it's too big.

It seems to run great after about 4pm Eastern, but there's times when it seems to run slower in the morning or early afternoon for some reason. It also seems like it runs faster when they are more people online. We've changed a lot things like the number of connections and memory settings. I don't think it's the server or the software.
