Anthony Bourdain, the gifted chef, storyteller and writer who took TV viewers around the world to explore culture, cuisine and the human condition for nearly two decades, has died. He was 61.

CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday and said the cause of death was suicide. Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series, "Parts Unknown." His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning.

"His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

Viewers around the world felt connected to Bourdain through his fearless travels, his restless spirit and his magical way with words. Fans, fellow chefs, celebrities and friends reacted to his death with stunned sorrow.

"My heart breaks for Tony Bourdain," CNN's chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, wrote on Twitter. "May he rest in peace now."

Former President Barack Obama recalled a meal he shared with Bourdain in Vietnam while Obama was on a trip through Asia in 2016 -- an encounter captured in a "Parts Unknown" episode that year.

"'Low plastic stool, cheap but delicious noodles, cold Hanoi beer.' This is how I'll remember Tony," Obama posted to Twitter on Friday. "He taught us about food -- but more importantly, about its ability to bring us together. To make us a little less afraid of the unknown. We'll miss him."

I heard on the radio that he hung himself. No other details. So sad. He was a very talented and accomplished man. So surprised that he would do that. There could be many reasons I suppose. He might have been suffering with depression or had a serious illness. I'm sure it will be revealed eventually. He will be missed. May he rest in peace. :(

This celebrity chef who rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous at the Brasserie Les Halles in Manhattan has hanged himself in a Strasbourg, France hotel room, one assumes whilst the balance of his mind was disturbed. Few will really know what occurs in the brain of those predisposed to suicide, though the strain of keeping up with a younger woman and a history of substance abuse must eventually take its toll. https://youtu.be/5Itq5lWfOVk

I can't help but think there's some cant and pretence here:

Anthony and Asia had a free relationship, they loved without borders of traditional relationships, and they established the parameters of their relationship early on.

Really? You mean they are both the product of the liberal 1960s revolution where everyone does their own thing, where they knew exactly what they were doing and nobody would get hurt. They had both been married previously more than once and sired children with more than one partner.

They assumed that there would be no collateral damage, no wider impact on society from wealthy individuals who ought to have shown a degree of restraint and set an example to their children, if not the wider society at large.

I agree with you what you are saying about modern relationships and the repercussions that come with them.

I'm mainly concerned about depression which is becoming epidemic. He chose not to follow the doctors advice and that did him in. I have family members who are Bi-polar and on meds to control it and it is working out fine for them. I don't know if he was ever really treated for his problem as he stated that he had been contemplating suicide for years. Unfortunately the depression became too much for him to live with which is a sad thing not just for him but for everyone who struggles with it.

My big question is what is causing all of this depression (especially with young kids)? Is it something in the air, our diet, etc.? I know that excessive drinking or drug use causes a lot of it but not everyone falls into that category.
