On thing I have noticed in practically all tv shows is everyone's couch is in the middle of the room. In real life most everyone has their couch against a wall, I've never seen anyone with a couch in the middle of the room lol

Just curious has anyone ever had a sofa in the middle of the room?

I generally just attribute this to the fact that on TV shows most everything like the staircase, closet, windows, etc are always aligned with the wall that we the audience see, so realistically the couch SHOULD be against the 4th wall that we do not see, but that would put ppl's backs to us when the sit on the couch, so they have to bring the sofa out and put it in the middle of the room like that.

Never actually saw a sofa "floating" in a room.

Yes! I have a friend that has had her sofa like that before! ;) I even commented when she first arranged the sofa that way that it's like sofas on TV shows! :D

Thats neat, come to think of it... My aunt an uncle have a really big den and they have a curved sofa kinda like that, there is at least walking space behind it. And also come to think of it I think in All in the Family, their sofa is against the wall.

Yes, the sofa was on the outside wall in front of the windows! They had two chairs in the middle of the room though which counts being that not all the furniture to sit on was against walls like you usually see in real/ non TV livingrooms! ;)

Obviously it's for filming in front of a live audience. Also, you might notice that when characters sit around the dinner table they always crowd into the far half of the table so they are all facing the camera.

lolol I also notice when they eat on TV they sit down at the table for like 2 minutes, and usually never have a drink with their meal. ALSO on TV shows when they are talking they usually stand like 3 inches from each other's faces, like when Archie and Mike argue or talk they are like right in each other faces and always standing...that would make me as uncomfortable as hell hehe

I did once in a small apartment I lived in. Then eventually moved it against one of the walls.

We did in our previous house. In the family room, it sorta served as a divider, in front of the couch the TV viewing area, behind it the computer area. We had a chest sitting behind the couch for easy access to blankets.

A friend of mine had a large sectional in the middle of the living room of their townhouse. Behind the sofa was a small computer desk.

It just hit me that a lot of TV living rooms are very open, likely for staging purposes.

I had a love-seat pulled out 4 feet from the wall so I could store my sons toybox & toys behind it when he was little. Having a sofa in the middle of the room wouldn't give you much space to get around it, especially if you have end-tables at each end. Now living in a mansion with enormous rooms, it would work out great. ;)

While my sofa is against the wall, my loveseat is in the middle of the room, providing a divider between the living room and entryway area.

My parents have a fairly long living room, maybe 60 feet by twenty feet square, so it is a big space, and all the walls are occupied with a piano, an organ, shelves, TV and what have you, but not the furniture, so basically they have had sofas in the middle of the room.

Yes, always. I've never had a sofa against a wall ever.

Now I wish I could do this!:) But the way my living room is I don't see how a sofa in the middle of the room would work or be practical !!
