What’s up, Doc? Did you know that Mel Blanc (1908-1989), the “Man of a Thousand Voices,” was one of the most famous names ever in voice acting. He graduated from a Portland-area high school and began working for radio stations in Portland in the late 1920s. In the early 1930s, he moved to Los Angeles to work in radio there. Over the years he voiced characters for The Joe Penner Show and The Jack Benny Program, to name a few. In 1936, he began to work for Leon Schlesinger Productions, which produced cartoons for Warner Brothers, and the most famous part of his career began. Directors like Tex Avery quickly recognized his talents, and soon he was getting “star” voice roles in cartoons like Porky’s Duck Hunt, where he was the voice of the stuttering pig who was the star of the short, and the zany waterfowl who nearly stole the show.
From 1941-1960, at least when it came to film work, Blanc was under an exclusive contract with Warner’s. He was the voice of almost all of the most famous Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies characters—Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Sylvester, Tweety, Yosemite Sam, etc.—except for Elmer Fudd. He was one of the only voice actors to be given official credit for his work in the forties and early fifties. Starting in 1960, Blanc also began doing extensive voice work with Hanna-Barbera. He was the voice of Barney Rubble and Dino on The Flintstones, along with Cosmo Spacely on The Jetsons, Secret Squirrel, Speed Buggy, and many more. He continued working up until his death in 1989.
