Tom Selleck became an icon wearing a mustache and Hawaiian shirts. Yet Jay Hernandez is sporting neither in promos for the CBS revival series. "Will a Magnum sans his mustache really have what it takes?" asks Vincent Boucher. "Much like Samson who lost his godly abilities when shorn of his lengthy locks, will the new iteration of the TV folk hero still have the power to keep the people tuned in without his bro-mo? We'll have to wait until this fall to find out. For now, we can only hope some kind of hairline storyline makes the cut."

i don't see why they don't just claim that it is also a reboot of Simon & Simon, My Mother The Car, The Love Boat and All My Children as well - that will REALLY bring in the viewers

They should have the Ferrari wear a mustache.

No, I do not think the reboot of Magnum PI can survive without a mustache. Hopefully, the reboot of the show will never as good as the original.

Why new Magnum P.I. Jay Hernandez doesn't have a mustache: "No one is going to replace Tom Selleck" (http://www.tvguide.com/news/magnum-pi-jay-hernandez-mustache/)

The mustache-free Thomas Magnum has been buzzed (https://twitter.com/MagnumPICBS/status/996021335565352960) about since the first image of Hernandez on the Magnum P.I. reboot was released. At CBS' upfronts on Wednesday, Hernandez explained why he's not sporting a mustache. "No one is going to replace Tom Selleck," Hernandez told TV Guide. "You can't do that. You gotta sorta reinvent it, take what works from the original show and sort of make it new so that's what we did." He added: "Just wait! Watch the show, there might be something that people who need the mustache might feel satisfied with." In reviewing the new Magnum P.I. trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMmv9JFOEB0), critic Daniel Fienberg said Thomas Magnum without the mustache doesn't feel like Magnum P.I. "I've got no objections at all to Jay Hernandez as Magnum, but without a mustache or conspicuous chest hair, nothing about him instantly screams 'Magnum!'" (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/fien-print/cbs-trailer-rankings-upfronts-2018-1112667) he says. Meanwhile, Vincent Boucher asks: "Will a Magnum sans his mustache really have what it takes?" He adds that a mustache in 2018 may be seen as "too ironic, too Brooklyn hipster." (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/new-magnum-pi-jay-hernandez-loses-mustache-1112063) TV mustaches, he points out, have also been associated with Milo Ventimiglia's tragic This Is Us character and James Franco's dark The Deuce characters. "For now, we can only hope some kind of hairline storyline makes the cut," says Boucher.
