Coming on the heels of a tremendously successful 2017-18 season that boasts the No. 1 show on television (“Roseanne”), the No. 1 new drama (“The Good Doctor”) and the No. 1 reality show launch (“American Idol”), ABC is set to announce a stellar slate of programming for the 2018-19 season. Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment, will unveil the network’s new lineup to the advertising and media communities this afternoon at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall in New York City.

“We enter the new season bolstered by success and the stability that it affords us,” Dungey said. “The new shows we unveil today strengthen an already-vibrant schedule of some of the best television has to offer. These shows, with their compelling characters and aspirational storytelling, will keep our momentum going.”

A total of eight new series have been announced for ABC’s 2018-19 season, including the one-hour dramas “A Million Little Things,” “The Fix,” “Grand Hotel,” “The Rookie” and “Whiskey Cavalier,” and the half-hour comedies “The Kids Are Alright,” “Schooled” and “Single Parents.”

Additionally, “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors,” previously announced last year, will be on the fall schedule. Starring the three-time Emmy® winner, the one-hour show will showcase Baldwin’s in-depth conversations with compelling personalities. The show is executive produced by Jason Schrift, along with Baldwin and Mallory Schwartz via his El Dorado Pictures.

For the entire 2017-18 season, ABC ranks a strong No. 2 in entertainment programming, pacing within 100k Adults 18-49 of tying NBC for No. 1. The Network claims 3 of the Top 5 broadcast entertainment shows this season (“Roseanne,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Good Doctor”), a network-leading 5 of the Top 10 comedies (“Roseanne,” “Modern Family,” “Splitting Up Together,” “The Middle” and “The Goldbergs”), the No. 1 freshman series (“The Good Doctor”) and the No. 1 TV show (“Roseanne”).

Bad schedule! Instead of Dancing with the Stars getting cut to one cycle a year, it goes back to two nights a week for the first time since the results show was cut. And yes, the junior edition is technically separate but it is the same overplayed franchise that is well past its prime. Fresh Off the Boat and Speechless are not being done any favors on Friday. Many had thought they would go there but that was before Last Man Standing was revived at FOX and they didn't upgrade its night. They would have been a lot better off on Sundays at 8:00, or even Fridays at 9:00 with no former ABC Friday comedy competition. On Wednesdays American Housewife should have stayed at 9:30 with the new comedy at 8:30. Past its prime Modern Family will continue declining next year, and The Goldbergs would be a stronger launching pad now. The new comedy airing at 8:30 would also have avoided two rookie shows back-to-back on Wednesday. Another waste: keeping Station 19 where it is and not using Grey's Anatomy to launch a new drama while it is still around. One good move was keeping The Good Doctor where it was, moving it to Tuesday like many thought would have been a disaster.

American Housewife kept going down in ratings season 2 while Speechless was more steady. AH should have been the show sent to Friday, despite ABC shoving constant ads for it down our throats Speechless had become the stronger show. Maybe that made ABC angry and they are trying to kill Speechless now, already had barely advertised it in season 2 and cut its order. The show that survived despite ABC not caring about it. Moving to Friday would have been one thing if The Goldbergs had been used to launch a new comedy, but instead past its prime Modern Family will be doing that.

I agree it was a bad schedule! Hell, if I ran ABC, I'd do an I love the 90s night on Tuesdays with Schooled, FOTB, and Roseanne! (in its original time slot!)

Boneheaded schedule here

It's just so hard to believe that this upcoming Fall schedule for ABC will be the first year without the Middle after all this time. But this will take getting used to no more Middle on ABC.

I never knew that one bad tweet would end up bringing down the most popular scripted series on U.S. broadcast television. After Roseanne Barr tweeted an incredibly racist comment directed towards a former advisor of Barack Obama's, ABC Network has decided to cancel the second special-attraction season of Roseanne, which was to have started airing this fall.

http://deadline.com/2018/05/roseanne-canceled-barr-abc-racist-tweets-1202399123/

I think this opens the door for American Housewife to move to an anchor slot, a "Plan B" of some sort. AH aired after The Middle in season 1 and Modern Family in season 2. Now with The Middle being gone from new episodes, ABC Network should take the opportunity to build the next top comedy and put American Housewife on the Tuesdays-at-8:00-PM timeslot next season.

The Kids Are Alright is excellent, the next Wonder Years. The family was cast well, and it is already a better period comedy than The Goldbergs ever was. And it is a lot better than ABC's other totally new comedy Single Parents, which was awful. The Kids Are Alright will remain my live viewing on Tuesdays over NCIS.

The Kids Are Alright is okay so far I guess. I'm gonna give it a 5 episode go before I decide if I want to keep watching it or not. I found it way too similar to Malcolm in the Middle and Everybody Hates Chris. My other gripe was some of the characters felt predictable. War veteran dad, older sibling who doesn't want to follow in the footsteps of his family and doesn't get along with his dad, middle child protagonist whose misunderstood/doesn't get things his way. I honestly wouldn't go as far as saying it's better than The Goldbergs, but it has some potential. Just needs to find its own identity.

Plus, The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Holiday Special will air on December 2 at 10 pm, and ABC's annual telecast of The Sound of Music will air on December 16 (at 7 pm).

HAPPY NEW YEAR, CHARLIE BROWN – The ABC Television Network and the PEANUTS gang will ring in the new year with the animated PEANUTS special “Happy New Year, Charlie Brown,” created by late cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, along with “She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown.” In “Happy New Year, Charlie Brown,” the PEANUTS gang is ringing in 1986, and Marcie and Peppermint Patty are throwing a big New Year’s Eve bash. Charlie Brown plans to celebrate the holiday by curling up with a big book that weighs nearly as much as he does, Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.” The book’s weight doesn’t stop him from lugging it to Lucy’s pre-party dance class, where he cuts a mean rug with a rollicking Patty. With just 1131 pages to go, Charlie Brown takes another break, this time for the party, and summons the courage to invite his true love, the little red-haired girl. She doesn’t respond, but hapless Chuck shows up anyway – with Tolstoy in tow. Then, he settles down with the book – on a porch swing in a snowstorm – and in so doing, misses the evening’s big surprise. In “She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown,” disaster strikes as Peppermint Patty heads to her first major ice-skating competition with coach Snoopy and faithful companion, Marcie, by her side. As always, the unassuming Woodstock flies in to save the day. (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

Unfortunately, everyone seems to have their own ideas about what Christmas is all about, so when Donkey, Puss In Boots, Gingerbread Man and the whole gang try to join in on the fun, Shrek’s plans for a cozy family celebration end up spiraling into one truly unforgettable Christmas. THURSDAY, DEC. 27

RUDOLPH’S SHINY NEW YEAR – It’s Rudolph to the rescue when Happy, the Baby New Year, goes missing, in “Rudolph’s Shiny New Year,” the classic Rankin/Bass stop-motion animated holiday special. Father Time asks the most famous reindeer of all, Rudolph, to find the next Baby New Year before midnight on New Year’s Eve. Red Skelton narrates and voices Father Time, while Frank Gorshin and Morey Amsterdam also provide voices for characters. (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

MONDAY, DEC. 31

Ryan Seacrest will serve as host and executive producer of the prime-time festivities and lead the traditional countdown to midnight from Times Square in New York City, as he has for the last 13 years, with live onsite reporting from actress and comedian Jenny McCarthy. Performers will be announced soon. (Beginning at 8 p.m.)

For those of you who were hoping that Sue Sue in the City would succeed The Conners in the Tuesday-at-8-PM timeslot once The Conners finished its 11-episode order, I've got some bad news for you. The The Middle spinoff is not going forward at ABC Network.

https://deadline.com/2018/11/the-middle-sue-heck-spinoff-dead-abc-pass-1202506243/

I guess this means the network will be considering that move of American Housewife to the Tuesday lead-off slot?

The Kids Are Alright should get moved up to the leadoff slot when The Conners finishes, and Schooled can air at 8:30. American Housewife does not need to be an anchor, it is a mediocre show that is just getting dragged to syndication now. AH should have been banished to Fridays instead of the much superior Speechless. Kids Are Alright is a fantastic show that ABC should advertise more and make a long time priority for their network. Next year Kids can stay in the leadoff slot and The Conners move to 9:00 where the original Roseanne aired a lot, with Black-Ish moving to 9:30 (or 8:30 with a new show airing after The Conners), and Splitting Up Together cancelled.

The ABC Network has confirmed today that American Housewife will indeed be moving to Tuesdays at 8 PM after The Connors finishes, starting February 5. Schooled, the new spin-off of The Goldbergs to premiere on January 9, is being slotted on Wednesdays at 8:30.

Oh, well, there's always the possibility of The Kids Are Alright being placed on Wednesdays at 9 after Modern Family ends.

* A Million Little Things will move to Thursdays at 9 PM and will air following Grey's Anatomy for the rest of its first season. Station 19 will return to the post-GA timeslot on March 7, and is to be joined by the second season of For the People at 10 PM.

* New action drama Whiskey Cavalier will air on the Wednesday at 10 PM hour starting February 27.

* Dancing with the Stars is not on the ABC midseason scheudle, but will still return next fall. Instead, The Bachelor will be running through March 11 in DwtS's Monday slot. American Idol will premiere its second season on Sunday, March 3, and will add a Monday installment on March 18. AI's Monday episodes will lead into new legal drama The Fix, which will succeed The Good Doctor in the Monday at 10 timeslot after that medical drama wraps its second season.

* America's Funniest Home Videos and Shark Tank will air two-hour installments during January and February 2019.

* New soapy drama Grand Hotel will air in the summer (launching June 17), following summer staple The Bachelorette on Monday.

* Veteran newsmagazine 20/20 will expand to two hours on Friday, and, starting March 3, Shark Tank will move to the Sunday at 10 PM hour, following AI, and AFHV returns to one hour.

These disappointing TV shows may not see another fall season (https://nypost.com/2019/02/11/these-disappointing-tv-shows-may-not-see-another-fall-season/)

The networks have given early renewals to freshman series including “God Friended Me,” “Magnum P.I.,” “The Neighborhood” and “FBI” (CBS) and “New Amsterdam” and “A Million Little Things” on NBC and ABC, respectively.

The CW has picked up nearly its entire lineup (no surprise there).

With a couple of months to go before the networks shut down production, executives will start deciding which programs will go by the wayside in May, when new fall lineups are announced. We now live in an era where the exits of veteran series that have run their course such as “Criminal Minds” (CBS) and “Modern Family” (ABC) are announced a full year in advance as a way to honor both the employees of those shows and the fans who stuck by them all these years.

Other programs will not be as fortunate.

On The CW, “All American,” a noble effort to imbue a teenage soap with some gravitas by sending an African-American football star from South Central LA to a high school in Beverly Hills, has one of the lowest scores in the ratings — a dire 0.24 in the 18-to-49 demo. Time to clean out the locker, quarterback.

On ABC, two new series, the sitcom “Splitting Up Together” and the procedural “The Rookie,” are in the same sad boat, scraping the bottom with ratings below 0.8 in the demo. What’s the point? Also heading south is the Viola Davis vehicle “How To Get Away With Murder.” With executive producer Shonda Rhimes developing new programs at Netflix, don’t expect any network loyalty there.

On NBC, two aging crime procedurals, “Blindspot” and “The Blacklist,” seem destined for the TV graveyard. “Blindspot” in particular is doing really poorly with a 0.48 in the demo.

CBS has had a great year, as usual, and will bid goodbye to its most successful sitcom, “The Big Bang Theory,” after 12 years. Its weakest link seems to be the Sunday night drama “Madam Secretary,” which is faltering in the demo with a desperate 0.6. The network may decide to move the Tea Leoni show to Friday nights, where the pressure is off and expectations are low. The cancellations of disappointments such as “Murphy Brown” and “Happy Together” probably will not be announced until May.

It would be shocking if either of these shows returned in the fall.

what I would schedule ABC fall 2019

Sundays
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos
8:00 Mike Vogel Bermuda Triangle Drama- This is the slot where Once Upon a Time started big. ABC has wasted opportunities to premiere new dramas here since Once moved to Fridays. All their new drama flops on Sundays recently have been at 9:00 and 10:00. 8:00 is also the hour Lost did the best.
9:00 How to Get Away with Murder final season
10:00 For the People or The Fix

Mondays
8:00 Shark Tank- would be a stronger leadoff show than DWTS has been lately
9:00-11:00 Dancing with the Stars

Tuesdays
8:00 The Conners full season
8:30 New Comedy
9:00 Black-Ish
9:30 American Housewife

10:00 New Drama

Fridays
8:00 Fresh Off the Boat
8:30 Speechless

Excuse me, why did you slate The Conners for a full season (read: 20+ episodes) if its cast and crew will only be doing 13 episodes per season because of cast availability issues. That's not going to be fair to American Housewife, which ABC is trying to push as the network's new flagship now that Modern Family announced its end next year. That, along with the fact that it beat the ratings of both Modern Family and The Goldbergs to be ABC's #1 comedy, is why I hate The Conners and avoid it as much as possible.

I think Fresh Off the Boat could be final season in 2019-20 also, because of low ratings it's been getting during its current fifth season.

American Housewife will never be strong enough to be ABC's flagship comedy, despite how much they try to push it down our throats. It is one of the weakest leadoff shows of a 4 comedy block in history (at least on ABC). Housewife should have been sent to Fridays instead of Speechless, Speechless was stronger after The Goldbergs. The ratings are precisely why I had The Conners at a full season. ABC needs that show all year, they can at least try to get the cast to do full seasons. I agree next year will probably be the final season for Fresh Off the Boat.

I wonder what ABC liked in American Housewife for it to be a potential top comedy, other than having the word "American" in its title? Clearly, the Roseanne revival and the subsequent The Conners reboot derailed those plans. If American Housewife got cancelled after one year (or was not picked up for the Fall 2016 season), then ABC would likely have put Speechless on after The Middle, Modern Family, and The Goldbergs, and pushed that to be the top comedy instead (and got screwed-over because of Roseanne/The Conners anyway). Another reason why they went with pushing AH instead of Speechless is because Speechless is produced by 20th Century Fox. Even if it means taking longer (like, eight years?) to reach syndication, I still doubt The Conners will ever do a full season, and personally, I do not want it. It might keep the cast from doing other projects, and it'll be easier for them to get burned-out that way. I just want to know, ratings aside, What Makes American Housewife Weak?

I bet ABC Network will probably go through a cycle of letting The Conners and American Housewife share the Tuesday-at-8pm timeslot. Under that scenario, The Conners airs in the Fall, and AH moved into the timeslot in the Winter/Spring once The Conners's seasons end.

If you don't want American Housewife occupying an anchor slot at all, then maybe ABC shouldn't have ordered it to series in the first place, and then it would be easier for The Conners to air 20+-episode seasons. Will American Housewife end after five or six years because of The Conners holding it back? If yes, this will just be further proof that having the word "American" in the title does not guarantee success on the American Broadcasting Company Network.

And now the recently-announced expansion of 20/20 to two hours (as part of a format change, reported by Variety) will limit space for scripted shows on Fridays to one hour.

hmmm. I don’t know about Modern Family. They moved the middle during its last season. That is because The Middle was not treated good by ABC. The Middle moved a total of three times and never got a push from ABC for Emmy nominations it should have received, while Modern Family has stayed where it is from the start.

An article (https://www.goldderby.com/article/2019/dancing-with-the-stars-results-show-fans-want-back-poll-results/) on GoldDerby.com posted earlier this month says that Tom Bergeron wants the Dancing with the Stars results show brought back, and so do its fans, however long it is. In a recent poll, 90% of the website's readers are in favor of a results show, with 72% saying it should be 30 minutes, and the other 18% saying it should be an hour. That is not going to sit well with those who prefer scripted programming, and I earlier today posted a comment saying no to a potential revival of the DwtS results show. Results shows have always been a waste of a broadcast network's schedule, and room for scripted shows will be tightened because of them.

Your thoughts on this, CatsRule, or anyone else?

JIMMY KIMMEL BRINGS AN UNFORGETTABLE NIGHT OF TELEVISION TO ABC WITH

‘LIVE IN FRONT OF A STUDIO AUDIENCE: NORMAN LEAR’S ‘ALL IN THE FAMILY’ AND ‘THE JEFFERSONS,’’ WEDNESDAY, MAY 22

ALL-STAR CAST INCLUDES ELLIE KEMPER, JAMIE FOXX, JUSTINA MACHADO,

MARISA TOMEI, WANDA SYKES, WILL FERRELL AND WOODY HARRELSON

ABC’s late-night host Jimmy Kimmel presents a live, 90-minute prime-time event in tribute to classic television sitcoms. “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons’” teams Kimmel with television icon Norman Lear and executive producers Brent Miller, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Justin Theroux. This special, airing live WEDNESDAY, MAY 22 (8:00-9:31 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network, will take viewers down memory lane, recreating an original episode from each of the Emmy® Award-winning series “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons.” This legendary night of television will be hosted by Lear and Kimmel, and directed by 10-time Emmy winner James Burrows.

“All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” were groundbreaking shows that changed American television. In this new, one-night-only event, Woody Harrelson will take on the role of Archie Bunker, alongside Marisa Tomei who will be playing Edith Bunker, with Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes playing George and Louise Jefferson. Ellie Kemper will play Gloria Stivic; Will Ferrell will appear as Tom Willis, and Justina Machado is set to play Florence Johnston. More stars will be named later.

“The fact that a group of Oscar® winners eagerly agreed to play these iconic characters is a testament to the greatness of these shows and their creator, Norman Lear. To be a part of this is a dream come true for me and for everyone involved,” said Jimmy Kimmel.

“We are so honored to partner with our brilliant friend Jimmy Kimmel and trailblazer Norman Lear to bring some of the most iconic sitcoms ever made back to television,” said Karey Burke, president, ABC Entertainment. “These revered shows are as culturally relevant today as they’ve ever been, and the talent they have gathered makes this the can’t-miss television event of the year … make that decade.”

“They have said over and over again that these two shows were meant for the ‘70s and would not work today. We disagree with them and are here to prove, with two great casts depicting ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons,’ the timelessness of human nature. I cannot wait to see what these glorious performers make in our time of these indelible characters, and I couldn’t be more grateful for Jimmy Kimmel, Sony and ABC for their collective willingness to conceive and pursue this never-been-done-before event,” said Norman Lear.

“We are honored and elated to be involved in retelling these groundbreaking stories, which are as relevant today as they were 40 years ago when they first aired. And to be working with such brilliant icons as Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel, as well as this dream cast, in this exciting new format, is nothing short of amazing!” said Sony Pictures Television Studios President Jeff Frost and Co-Presidents Chris Parnell and Jason Clodfelter.

From 1971 through 1979, “All in the Family” was in the homes of millions of Americans, tackling controversial subjects for the first time such as women’s rights, racism and homosexuality. The series followed Archie Bunker as the highly opinionated, working-class family man who viewed the world on his terms. When not arguing with his liberal son-in-law, Archie took refuge in his wife, Edith, who tried to understand Archie's conservative ways and outdated beliefs. The award-winning series shaped ongoing political and social conversations among American families in the post-civil rights era.

The success of “All in the Family” launched “The Jeffersons,” running from 1975 to 1985. It was the first television series to feature an interracial couple, and it would go on to be one of the longest-running African-American shows on TV. The series followed George and Louise Jefferson moving on up to the east side and showcasing what it was like to be successful in a predominantly white world. The series changed the landscape and helped shift conversations about race and class, paving the way for other African-American actors and TV shows.

“Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons’” will be produced by Smoking Baby Productions, ACT III Productions, Gary Sanchez Productions and Sony Pictures Television. Norman Lear, Jimmy Kimmel, Brent Miller, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Justin Theroux will executive produce; and the live special will be directed by James Burrows.

Bless This Mess is garbage that doesn't deserve to come back. If ABC foolishly renews it, will be another Splitting Up Together situation for season 2. The difference this year is ABC doesn't need a save face comedy renewal like that, the only other freshman comedies in SUT's season (Roseanne was not a rookie) were The Mayor and Alex, Inc. The Kids Are Alright is the best comedy that has premiered in a long time. I hope ABC is behind TKAA and patient with it like they were The Middle. Hardly advertising it compared to most of their other freshman hasn't helped , but The Middle was constantly under advertised as well and ended up with a nice long run. TKAA is also closer to syndication already having a full season, Mess only has a handful of episodes so far and doesn't fit in with the rest of ABC's family comedy focus. Speechless hasn't done well since being shoved to Friday but should still be protected for one more season by the 3rd season fully owned syndication rule. And Sundays shouldn't be permanently sent to the reality wasteland either. ABC wasn't trying at all the last few falls. DWTS should be reduced to summer or Saturdays, way past its prime now. Bermuda Triangle would be a good show for Sundays at 8:00, the exact slot where Once Upon a Time dominated for several seasons. 8:00 is also where Lost was the strongest on another night, before moving to later hours. If Triangle does well enough for a full season there, American Idol could move to 9-11 when it came back, giving the affiliates a strong lead-in for their news. Shark Tank might do better leading off Mondays or moving back to Fridays at 9:00.

what I would schedule for ABC 2019-2020 season

Sundays
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos
8:00 Bermuda Triangle- ABC the last 2 falls has been pathetic not even trying on Sundays. The night doesn't need turned into a permanent reality wasteland. This is the slot where Once Upon a Time did really well at the start. Also, it is called Triangle now but Bermuda Triangle would be a better title.
9:00 Station 19
10:00 How to Get Away with Murder final season
In March American Idol airs 9-11 giving the affiliates a strong lead-in for their local news.

Mondays
8:00 Shark Tank/The Bachelor/Shark Tank
9:00 The Good Doctor- moves back to 10:00 when The Bachelor airs in January.
10:00 New Drama

Tuesdays
8:00 The Conners
8:30 Mixed-ish
9:00 Life in Pieces if CBS cancels it
9:30 The Kids Are Alright
10:00 The Rookie

Wednesdays
8:00 The Goldbergs
8:30 Schooled
9:00 Modern Family final season
9:30 New Comedy
10:00 NYPD Blue or other new drama

Thursdays
8:00 Grey's Anatomy
9:00 New Drama- GA should launch more new shows while it is still around. Station 19 and AMLT I have moved elsewhere.
10:00 A Million Little Things

Fridays
8:00 Fresh Off the Boat
8:30 Speechless
9:00 American Housewife
9:30 Black-ish
10:00 20/20- I really hope ABC doesn't take the lazy way and make 20/20 two hours permanently.

Saturdays
8:00 For the People- a way to keep a fantastic low rated show around without it dragging down a more important night.
9:00-11:00 Repeats/Movies

Dancing with the Stars gets sent to summers only along with Match Game.

Cancelled
DWTS Junior, Child Support, Single Parents, Bless This Mess, Whiskey Cavalier, The Alec Baldwin Show, The Fix

Grrr! For the People is cancelled after 2 seasons. Nothing like watching tonight's episode and seeing this announcement during the show. The only show from Shonda Rimes I like and the one that did the worst.

ABC sucks. TKAA barely got promoted all year, almost all their other freshman shows got more. And TKAA kept most of its audience despite going to a lot weaker lead-in. I hope ABC does really terrible next year.

I agree catsrule with everything you said!!! They could of atleast brought The Kids Are Alright To TGIF Friday’s. (It kind of had a Just The 10 Of Us meets The Wonder Years feel to it).
