Anne Baxter (1923-1985) was a granddaughter of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. She began acting in school plays as a child, and made her Broadway debut at the age of 13 in the play Seen But Not Heard. She signed a contract with Fox at the age of about 16 or 17 and made her film debut in 1940. She was loaned to RKO for Orson Welles’s The Magnificent Ambersons, and starred in a variety of films through the forties, like The Pied Piper, Five Graves to Cairo, A Royal Scandal, and Yellow Sky. She appeared several times with recent headliner Tyrone Power, including Crash Dive and The Razor’s Edge, winning Best Supporting Actress honors for the latter film. In 1950, she was cast in her most famous film role, Eve Harrington, the title character of All About Eve.

Baxter and Bette Davis both received Best Actress nominations for All About Eve, but both lost to Judy Holliday. Baxter remained a major star until well into the fifties. She starred in thrillers like Hitchcock’s I Confess, and Fritz Lang’s The Blue Gardenia, and played Nefreteri in the epic blockbuster The Ten Commandments, In the late sixties, she appeared as two different guest villains on Batman, Zelda the Great (http://batman.wikia.com/wiki/Zelda_the_Great) and Olga, Queen of the Cossacks (http://batman.wikia.com/wiki/Egghead_(Vincent_Price)#Known_Associates). One of her last notable roles was a return to Broadway in the musical Applause (an adaptation of All About Eve), in which she changed roles, playing Margo Channing (she replaced Lauren Bacall about halfway into the show’s run).
