The Skakel's hired a private detective to refute that Thomas did it. He investigated and told them Michael did it. If you knew the facts you'd have no doubt Michael did it.

Reading around online about how the Moxleys are handling this, Dorothy in particular, is that nothing surprises them anymore after everything they have experienced.

How did they make that claim? If I remember correctly, Thomas was the last one to see Martha alive. Also, wasn't Michael the one throwing rocks at Martha's bedroom window at a time where detectives believe she was already dead? It's possible that Michael didn't know she was dead at that point. The golf club used to beat Martha to death was lost or never found. To not have that crucial piece of evidence for fingerprint and DNA testing makes the case bungled.
