View Full Version : Anyone ever see the American version of Are you being served? Sitcomwriter 05-25-2002, 09:23 PM Anyone? I think it was called Beanes of Boston and it starred Charlotte Rae (FOL) as Mrs.Slocomb! I would LOVE to see it! 80sTrivia 05-25-2002, 11:48 PM I didn't realize there was an American version of Are You Being Served. But the thought of Mrs. Garrett from The Facts of Life as Mrs. Slocombe is quite hilarious!!! mook42 06-08-2002, 10:37 PM "The Beanes of Boston" was actually an unsold pilot produced by Garry Marshall and starred Alan Sues ("LAUGH-IN") as Mr. Humphries, John Hillerman ("MAGNUM P.I.") as "Mr." Peacock, Lorna Patterson ("PRIVATE BENJAMIN") as Miss Brahms and, of course, Charlotte Rae as Mrs. Slocombe. It never sold. 17Mar59 06-09-2002, 08:51 PM Sounds like it would have been utterly hilarious with those folk in it!too bad it never sold. FYI:Another American version of a Britcom that never sold was the American Red Dwarf, one version of which featured Terry "Jadzia Dax"Farrell as Cat. mook42 06-09-2002, 11:03 PM When I get a chance I'll check at the Museum of Broadcasting and see if they have it in their archives. They have almost everything. I once saw the very first "All in the Family" pilot with different actors playing Gloria and "Richard" Stivick (let's just say it was not yet what it would become). Also saw the pilot for the Dick Van Dyke show called "Man of the House" I believe. It starred Carl Reiner as Rob Petrie (pronounced Pee-tree). Its a great place to spend a day if you're a sitcom nut! Sitcomwriter 06-17-2002, 11:55 PM Mook42 do they have a website? mook42 06-18-2002, 11:39 PM Yes. www.mtr.org 17Mar59 07-08-2002, 09:39 PM One of the ironies of All In The Family is that one of the actresses that Sally Struthers eventually beat out for the role of Gloria was Rob Reiner's then wife Penny Marshall. pkripper001 01-18-2015, 11:42 PM Is there at least one photo and/or at least a few second video clip to prove it was made ? I know it aired, but back then a VCR was very expensive and the few people who had them might have been watching and not recording, since it aired on 5 May 1979. rusty spike 03-08-2015, 10:58 PM With good writing, it could have been an interesting venture. jayman75 03-09-2015, 12:36 PM IMDB Details of Beans of Boston (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0164386/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_40) I checked YouTube - no clips there. I bet this could have seen a bit of footing, but then we might never have seen The Facts of Life or Magnum, PI. pkripper001 03-09-2015, 11:01 PM This could have been better then Magnum, PI and could have gave The Facts of Life a run for there money. snowpeck 11-01-2016, 02:35 AM It's finally been posted to YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rry-zw1buo Willbo 11-01-2016, 08:11 AM Just watched and thought it was very funny and true to the original. Wish they had picked it up. Babalu 11-06-2016, 02:33 PM I watched most of it. I saw many episodes of the original but I don't remember a character like the nephew. He's the real weak point in the show. He's a wooden actor and lousy straight man. John Hillerman, Charlotte Rae and Alan Sues are all good but Lorna Patterson is horribly annoying with that whiny voice. Tom Poston, a reliable character player is miscast, although his character as an old lecher is great and unusual for American TV. That's probably why it wasn't picked up. I think this would have been better suited for Norman Lear because he would have went for it. That bland nephew character killed any chance the show had. Mayberry'sBadBoy 08-19-2017, 08:58 PM I don't know whichis worse: Beane's of Boston or the Australian Remake of Are you Being served? They're both pretty bad with significant miscasting for the majority of the cast. I found interesting that the Humphries character in both seemed to be more of a combination of Lucas and Humphries than his regular self, which is rather surprising given John Inman played Humphries in the Australian remake. I also found it surprising that in both versions the actress playing Mrs. Slocombe seemed to be the only perfectly cast character though Beane's of Bostons Mr. Peacock seemed a lot closer to the original than the Australian version who was renamed Captain Wagstaff. |
