Ellie Kemper celebrated her 38th birthday yesterday. Kemper spent most of her childhood in St. Louis, MO, where she attended John Burroughs School and had Jon Hamm as a drama teacher. She went on to graduate from Princeton, and then did graduate study at Oxford for a few years. While at Princeton, she was involved in several theatrical groups, and in the last half of the 2000s, she began appearing in comedy sketches on shows like Late Night with Conan O’Brien. She also was active in several New York area improv and sketch comedy theater groups. In 2009, Kemper auditioned for a role on Parks & Recreation; she didn’t get it, but wound up joining the cast of The Office as Erin Hannon. She was a recurring character for the show’s fifth season before becoming a regular in seasons 6-9.

Kemper made her feature film debut in 2009’s Mystery Team. She has has supporting roles in films like Get Him to the Greek and Laggies. Her best-known film role so far has probably been as one of the title characters of Bridesmaids. She has made a number of TV guest appearances, including filling in as the host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show when DeGeneres was out sick, and since 2015 has starred as the title character of Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Kemper has received two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, as well as a pair of SAG Award nominations, as Kimmy Schmidt.
