Both are on the surface, about terrorists holding people hostage inside of a high rise building in Los Angeles. There's even a character in "Desperate Hours" named Mr. Gruber (http://www.tv.com/shows/its-a-living/desperate-hours-13427/) just like the chief villain (http://villains.wikia.com/wiki/Hans_Gruber) in Die Hard.
