Canadian actor and filmmaker Seth Rogen is turning 36 today. He grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, and began getting gigs as a comedian in his teens. When he was about 16 or 17 he attended a casting call, which led to his being cast as Ken Miller on Freaks and Geeks. Regarded as a classic today, the series lasted just one season, but for Rogen it meant being able to link up with executive producer Judd Apatow. Rogen subsequently was a regular, and a writer, on Apatow’s Undeclared (another short-lived series), and had a prominent supporting role in the director’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin. He wrote several episodes for Da Ali G Show, and costarred in the 2006 comedy You, Me and Dupree, before reconnecting with Apatow to star as a slacker who has a one-night stand with a go-getter of a TV host—which has consequences.

Knocked Up was one of the biggest financial successes of 2007. That year, Rogen also was the co-writer (with his childhood friend Evan Goldberg) of Superbad, and also costarred in it as Officer Michaels; the film was another financial and critical success. Those two films, along with Neighbors, are the most successful live-action films of Rogen’s career. He and Goldberg also wrote, and Rogen starred in, Pineapple Express, and the duo made their directing debut with the disaster comedy This Is the End. Rogen’s venture into big-budget action as The Green Hornet was a flop, but he has successfully moved beyond comic roles in films like Sarah Polley’s Take This Waltz and Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs (as Steve Wozniak). He has also been a successful voice actor, in films like Monsters vs. Aliens and the Kung Fu Panda franchise. He costarred in last year’s The Disaster Artist, will be the voice of Pumbaa in the remake of The Lion King, and will star as Walter Cronkite in David Gordon Green’s Newsflash, reportedly due out in 2019.
