Paul Sorvino is celebrating his 79th birthday today. The father of past headliner and WTHH subject Mira (https://lebeauleblog.com/2016/09/28/september-28-happy-birthday-naomi-watts-and-mira-sorvino/), Sorvino grew up in Brooklyn and worked for a time writing copy for an ad agency. In 1964, he made his Broadway debt in the musical Bajour, and he worked regularly on Broadway through the late 1970s. The high point of his career was undoubtedly winning a Drama Desk Award, and receiving a Tony nomination, as Phil Romano in the original Broadway production of Jason Miller’s That Championship Season. Sorvino returned to the role of Phil Romano in the 1982 feature film adaption of the play, and in 1999 he directed an adaptation for Showtime, while moving over to the role of Coach.

Sorvino has made occasional forays into series television, most notably as a regular parts of two seasons of Law & Order and in the starring role of CBS’s That’s Life from 2000-2002. He is best known for his feature film work. He has been one of the leading character actors in film since his acclaimed performance in 1971’s The Panic in Needle Park. As with most character performers, it’s hard to do more than hit a few high points of his film career. He has been in notable political films, as Louis Fraina in Reds and Henry Kissinger in Nixon. He and yesterday’s headliner Claire Danes played father and daughter in Romeo + Juliet. He may be best known for playing a variety of cinematic mobsters, ranging from Eddie Valentine in The Rocketeer, to Anthony Salerno in Kill the Irishman, to one of his most famous roles, as Paulie Cicero in Goodfellas.
