Good OLDER things that RAN BETTER are being replaced with cheap garbage and its sad people just WILLINGLY accept this trash.... Stuff made in the 50s,etc was MUCH BETTER and ran nicer........

Now those units were the biggest energy hogs,but just like cars,got WORSE in the later 70s..... But I would rather have something OLDER than was made well and runs good then this newer garbage made from 2000 on!!

I have seen people (Even my own parents) take perfectly GOOD things and replace them with something else (Which isnt as good WHICH THEY THINK IS BETTER!) -- Its really sad what the elite have done to people...... (To make them easily managable (Those with WEAK MINDS are most vulnerable))

Whenever old stuff gets tossed out it bothers me. My feeling is that an appliance that still functions should never be replaced until it stops working.

They used to make electronics that would last for decades. But these days I'm not so sure that's a priority. Cutting corners is economical in the moment so there you go.

Our microwave is from the 80s and it still works just fine.

Like many other examples, which is better has to be looked at on a case-by-case basis. For example, refrigerators from the 1950s will still run, but older ones are not self-defrosting. That's a true hassle. Another advantage with newer big appliances is that they're lighter in weight, therefore easier to move.

There are also modern materials that have advantages. My old air conditioner outside unit had a painted steel grill that was beginning to chip and rust. The new one is made of very tough materials that won't degrade.

It's great when you can get prolonged life from an old appliance. I recommend Consumer Reports and other sources to help you steer clear of new ones that are substandard.

No argument with you there. Contemporary refrigerators are plastic and styrofoam junk. Lucky if the compressor lasts 10 years.

I've got a 1960s vintage Frigidaire with all wire racks that runs like a charm in my basement.

Got an old 1940s era Servel gas refrigerator, that is great in principle, but dates from an era when natural gas was almost free.

Turn that baby on now, and watch the gas bill go through the roof.

My apt bldg is old and my kitchen stove is OKeef Merritt and it's the best old stove out there....works like a charm. There is a restoration business out there for these stoves.

Most of goods are now made in China, and because of this, things are not made to last for whatever reason. I will even go so far as to say mobile phones are the same way. I use Apple, I like Apple products, even though they are obscenely expensive and I hate their politics. Now I have three Apple phones, all "hand me downs" from my wife. My main phone which I had for about four years has stopped connecting to Wifi and was told that basically the phone was "shot" and repairing it would cost more than just getting another phone. My other smaller phone is about on its "last legs" but its a trooper. I also have two older Ipads, and the oldest one is now over ten years old and still works but will no longer download applications.

I bought a toaster online in China. Chinese dont eat toast and wanted a toaster badly. Bought one online from Taobao which is the main online retailer. I loathe to buy anything online but this was the only way to get it.

The toaster lasted about six months. I used it a lot for breakfast and make sandwiches. Then one day it just stopped working. Couldnt push the lever down without the bread opooing back up and the coils stopped heating. No more toaster. Now, I have no toaster but wont get another one online. It isnt Amazon here (and I hate Amazon like Hitler) there is no same day delivery. The faux-virus slows everything down to nothing. I did get my pickles from Taobao so they arent completely worthless, but the delivery took a month.

But these are my experiences and I think TVs still last a long time, but when they die, they are garbage. The era of the TV repairman went out over thirty years ago. Just buy a new set. They are not that expensive really. The problem is the pollution caused by throwing old electronics away. They have no reuse and cannot be recycled (correct me if I am wrong). Probably literally four billion plus people on Earth uses a phone and/or portable device. They die either by old age. dropped in a pool of water or ran over by a car. Its junk and junk that wont go away.

Go on YouTube and look up "Bowling Ball in a Dryer." It is what it is, someone puts a bowling ball in an old dryer and then the bowling ball tears the dryer up.

I dont know why, but this is fascinating and hilarious.

There was a movie called She-Devil with Roseanne Barr and Ed Begley Jr., playing her husband (who hated each other and divorced). The Roseanne character decided to destroy his house and put a can of Raid aerosal spray into a microwave. Maybe that is online too. By the way, She-Devil is a good movie despite how bad it sounds.

On the other hand, old gas refrigerators were a PITA the way the central core would ice up and require manual defrost 4-5 times a year, with drips and ice chips flying everywhere.
I remember my mom encouraging me to expedite the process with an ice pick, and then nagging me through the whole process "dont hit a gas line".

The central core shown in the following photo, would acquire a built-up layer of frothy white ice an inch thick all around it, and the only remedy was to put the unit in defrost mode and peel away, mess everywhere. (but it beat having to lug a block of ice home from the store 3 times a week, so it WAS "progress")

The house I grew up in was built in 1940, built originally with a forced-air gas fired furnace, and was considered a "modern" home, compared to the homes around it that still used coal for heat.

They kinda went overboard with the "modern" gimmick, and put a gas incinerator in the basement right next to the furnace under the pretense that you no longer had to go outside to burn your trash.

We never used the incinerator while I was there, but once asked why not, and was told that using it made the entire house smell like smoke. This is another one of those things that I don't think you'd want to pay modern gas utility prices to operate.

Ours was a little bigger than the following, and round instead of square, ...but same basic concept.

Of course, gas was so cheap back then because coal was the predominant form of home heat, and the gas utilities were trying to woo customers away from the competition.

Below is a typical residential coal furnace of the prior era, complete with the trademark "octopus" air ducts on top.

Most you'd have to go downstairs every 3-4 hours to restoke with coal, manually with a shovel, or otherwise you'd wake up to a cold house that would take hours to recover comfortable temps.

Not to mention periodic ash removal you'd have to carry out of the house.

I'll bet there were not many people runnin around claiming "these new gas furnaces are garbage, I miss coal"

I have one of those smaller/newer air conditioners in my window and it really sucks!!

I put it on 65 and close my door and go out and hours later I come back and it really isnt that cool in my room!

There is a button on this for "POWER SAVE" but it still runs much more than my older AC..... I should have had that one put in when I could! (That one is too heavy for my dad to lift)
