Practically speaking I advise shredding or burning all personal information once you've read it.

that won't prevent identity theft - if they have your information they can just create accounts in your name.

Seriously, I think doing things the old fashioned way is the best way to avoid it. Like not having your banking information online and stuff. And as the other poster said shredding documents with your information on them when you are done reading! ;)

I agree. I've never banked online. I understand the convenience of doing things online but there comes a point where you have to wonder, is it really convenience or just laziness.

:) Even, if you don't have a bank account or a credit card account, we ALL have social security numbers, and that's all they need! The IRS was hacked,
Equifax was hacked, Hospital and Voting Systems have been hacked. There goes your name, address, phone. and social security number. I wish it WERE that simple to prevent identity theft. :)

I know !! I wish!!! ;) When did all this start !? It would be cool if it was like the REALLY old days where you got your hard earned pay in cash and put it in an old tea pot on a shelf! :lol: Well not to go back THAT far, Social security was a really good idea for retirement and disability and all but life got very complicated and dishonest ! :confused:

So back to identity theft, besides really keeping your banking offline and shredding documents ,these days making purchases online could jeopardize your credit cards ! That is the ONLY modern thing I do! And well, my credit isn't great so I have a very low credit card limit . So if someone stole my credit card information , they really would be sh*t out of luck and have picked the wrong person to hack.;) They wouldn't get very far or many purchases on what I have!!!:lol:

Yep!!! Like illegal or criminal type people who can't work under their own identity stealing a Social Security number from an honest law abiding citizen so they can work and getting that person in really big trouble with the IRS and stuff !! I've heard of this stuff happening!!!! :eek: :confused:

I use a credit monitoring service that sends me alerts. It cost $16 a month but worth it for the peace of mind.
