With the exciting announcement of "Mighty Orbots - The Complete Series" coming to DVD through Warner Archive this April 17th (pre-order is up on wbshop.com) I figured Id make a topic on this short lived but beloved series!

Mighty Orbots was a co-production between TMS entertainment of Japan and MGM. Some of the greatest directors and animators in the history of Japanese anime were involved with its creation. Fred Silverman had pitched the idea in response to the transforming robot boom of the early 80s. A common misconception is that the show was cancelled because Tonka sued due to the series being to similar to the Go Bots- this is not the case, the Orbots show is NOTHING like the Go Bots (The Orbots are more like Voltron and less like Go Bots or Transformers). Tonka did sue, but it was over the fact that the planned Orbots toy was a recolored "God Mars" (another Japanese giant robot anime) combiner figure that Tonka owned the US rights to, but alas never produced. This was the nail in the Orbots coffin.

The Mighty Orbots (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/MightyOrbots), the story (https://marcallie.com/2019/08/17/in-praise-of-mighty-orbots/) of smaller robots (https://www.aintitcool.com/mighty-orbots-83202/) that combine (https://www.tfw2005.com/boards/threads/combiner-wars-mighty-orbots.1054912/) into a bigger robot, only lasted 1 short 13 episode season on ABC in 1984.

It had no toys, no comics, no lunchboxes, no video games, no nothing.

But what it did have was a lawsuit (https://www.cbr.com/the-might-orbots-tonka-lawsuit/) from Tonka alleging infringement on it's copyright for The Gobots.
