Today is Alyson Hannigan’s 44th birthday. She began appearing in commercials as a young girl, and was cast in her first major film role at 13, costarring with Dan Aykroyd and Kim Basinger in My Stepmother Is an Alien (a young actor named Seth Green had a supporting role). She worked regularly in film and television in the 1990s while studying at Cal State Northridge, and near the end of that decade became well known for two roles. On television, she was cast as Willow Rosenberg on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A couple of years later, she became part of the ensemble cast of a film called American Pie.

Hannigan returned to the role of Michelle Flaherty for three sequels to American Pie, and remained with Buffy for all of its seven seasons, also making a few crossover appearances on Angel. She and fellow Buffy/Angel cast member Alexis Denisof have been married for nearly 15 years. In 2005 she was cast in the regular role of Lily Aldrin on CBS’s How I Met Your Mother (which at times was aired back-to-back with The Big Bang Theory). Since 2016, she has been the host of The CW’s Penn & Teller: Fool Us.
