I've loved UM since I was 12. It was the show that made me a true crime buff

I've been going through the seasons on amazon and I just can't believe the amount of paranormal type segments. The number seems to increase with each season

UM jumped the shark by season 4....unfortunately

I loved the paranormal segments. What made Unsolved Mysteries stand out from the rest was that it wasn't just a true-crime show. It focused on a wide range of unsolved mysteries. That's part of the show's charm and appeal for me.

I have to agree. Though some were..........well....yeah. But it was the mix that MADE Unsolved Mysteries what it was, and made it stand out. And it didn't just stand out from true-crime stuff, it stood out even among paranormal shows. Like when Sightings started. I could never get into it.

Personally, I think the only show that holds a candle (content-wise and viewability-wise) to UM was In Search Of.

I was totally into Sightings. I loved that particular show. Not as much as UM, but I found their segments interesting...

Having had several years of UM-I think Sightings started airing over here or I first saw it at least around 1994/1995, by which point Sky had been showing UM since 1988 I just thought it was a bargain basement rip-off. Liked the host a lot & was always wondering if he was wearing a wig or not. We also had a show hosted by Corbin Bernsen called The Extraordinary based off an Aussie series that had a different host which I prefered to Sightings-the reconstructions were hilariously campy.

It is hard to judge the supernatural stuff because being a youngster I believed in all that stuff so it was great & even now being a skeptic I still enjoy them. The things I always liked the least were past lives, lost loves & hidden treasure.

I always liked the ghost segments because...who doesn't love a good ghost story?!

*I* DON'T! But I'm a Christian who doesn't feel it's worth my time to give unsavory things credence. Isn't there all ready too much vile stuff in this world without seeking out and attempting to validate to more from another dimension?!

P.S. I don't mind fictional stuff as long as it's clear that it IS fictional and that the protagonists find this out by the end of the account (e.g. Legend of Sleepy Hollow).

P.P.S. TOTALLY agree with you, Perhaps It's You! IMO, these were big time wasters!

I loooooove In Search Of. Got the box set a while ago (they used to all be on YT not sure if that's still the case).

For me the holy trinity of these shows would be completed with the 80s Jack Palance-hosted Ripley's Believe it Or Not which has sadly not been available in any form for a long time (unless something happened recently). Never on DVD or streaming.

Christian here, too. But I enjoy ghost stories and legends. I see nothing wrong with a good tale.

Have you ever seen the Arthur C Clarke series? The entire collection from 1980-1995 is available on box set.

Yep I have that box as well...

Other than that, UM, ISO and Ripley's, none of the other shows of this ilk (that I have seen) have consistently delivered the goods.

There was just something magical about the approach of the 70s/80s where supernatural curiosity and scientific rigor met and formed a tasty combo; few things spark nostalgia for my childhood as much as these shows do.

I've been putting off buying the box set for years, now. The last I knew, it was still on YT. And I totally forgot about Palance's RBION!

It was the music.

Think about it...the best UM theme was the original. It got...lame...in later years. Then the Farina ones....... *shudder*

ISO was the same. That great synthesizer stuff in the original airings....then they updated the theme for the rebroadcasts on the History Channel. Hell, they even changed the announcer for the disclaimer!

Nah, that isn't the only thing  but I do say it's a part of it...

The round mound of love.

Seriously, Alan Mann has the GREATEST "ghost story" of all time.

"A ghost decided to hijack my wife's body into a night of rough sex!"

And he was...like....scared of it? Dude...there's only one thing to say about that:

I'm with you 100%

The first thing that got my attention in the beginning was the original theme music. Even the original Update music was distinctive and chilling at the same time.

Absolutely. I always found the update music creepy as hell.

Even the paranormal and true crime mixing in cases like Teresita Basa and John Hardin.

Looking back on this now years later, the supernatural segments added to UM's nostalgic value for me, but now, I find they get old quick and are why I quit my last run through toward the end of season 5 (whereas the last time I watched season 1-8 straight through)

As a kid I loved the paranormal bits, but I too now use them as buffers to surf the web in between true crime segments.

Ehh - the Rendlesham Forest case has stuck with me, so much so, that it's the only one I've plugged into YouTube.......have watched at least 3-4 other documentaries on it (remember one where Halt, Burrows & whoever else are pitted against Larry Warren in the accounting of what happened)

Just saw the episode where young chucky came down with rye syndrome

It was enraging. The parents credited superstition and an imaginary young boy for his recovery. At no time did they thank the doctors
