McDonough succeeded Mike Tirico two years ago when Tirico moved to NBC Sports. But with Jon Gruden's departure, Monday Night Football will get a new play-by-play announcer this fall. ESPN college football broadcaster Tessitore will take over, as McDonough returns to college. ALSO: Peyton Manning has turned down Monday Night Football, but Fox's Thursday Night Football is still a possibility. Ex-Monday Night Football announcer is okay with his demotion because "it wasn’t a tremendous amount of fun the last two years" (https://nypost.com/2018/03/15/sean-mcdonough-happy-to-be-done-with-watered-down-monday-night-football/)
“If you go back and look at the schedule, generally we got one of the worst NFL games each week," Sean McDonough said on radio station WEEI in his first comments since ESPN demoted him back to college football announcing. "You’re trying to make something sound interesting and exciting that isn’t. For me, part of it was just the way the booth was set up the last two years. It was really geared around Jon Gruden. That’s not unusual, TV really is an analyst-driven medium."
