Beloved “Frasier” star John Mahoney died Sunday, TMZ reported. He was 77.
Mahoney was best known for his role as Martin Crane. He played the role of Frasier and Niles’ father for 11 seasons. Mahoney was nominated for an Emmy twice for the role. He won a SAG award for his role on the show.
He also had roles in “Flipped,” “Barton Fink,” “Say Anything” and “Hot in Cleveland,” among others.
Frasier casting director Jeff Greenberg mourned Mahoney’s loss on Twitter.
” I’ve not known a kinder man nor more brilliant actor,” Greenberg said. “We were all blessed to have spent 11 glorious years together.”

John Mahoney, an appreciation: The Frasier star connected with viewers with the twinkle in his eye (http://www.vulture.com/2018/02/john-mahoney-frasier-appreciation.html)
Mahoney’s role as Martin Crane, “the salt-of-the-Earth father” of Frasier and Niles, is always misperceived, says Jen Chaney of the actor, who died Sunday at age 77. “When people describe that character, they tend to use words like ‘cantankerous’ or ‘crusty,’ which are not inaccurate,” says Chaney. “Martin Crane was emotionally closed off, sometimes grumpy, a man’s man, and a father who often had trouble understanding how his genes could possibly be linked to the ones inside his pretentious-sophisticate offspring, whom he loved even if he couldn’t bring himself to say it. But when I think about Martin Crane and what Mahoney brought to the part — what he brought to so many of the roles he played — I immediately think about the twinkle in his eye. It was that twinkle that allowed audiences to feel connected to him, to look past the flaws of the men he portrayed and connect with the joy, childlike mischief, and affection he felt for the people — or, in the case of Martin’s beloved dog, Eddie, the animals — in his characters’ lives.”

king of comedy 02-06-2018, 07:21 PM I never even knew he was from England. Great actor and may he R.I.P.
Samme 02-06-2018, 11:13 PM I first saw him in Tin Men. One of those actors who seemed to always be good. But he was great on Frasier. It was a great show that sometimes faltered in later seasons, but he didn't. He was always a pleasure to watch. He made it a great character. A sad loss. Actors as good as him feel like television friends.
Family Ties Forever! 02-07-2018, 02:23 AM He was a good actor. RIP. :(
lakesgirl 02-07-2018, 12:36 PM I'm currently watching S2 of Frasier. Loved him. Here is one of my favorite quotes from him:
“I’ve achieved remarkable success, and I think it all goes back to my faith, especially after I became an actor and realized that was God’s plan for me and surrendered myself to it joyfully,” he says. “It enabled me to shrug off the disappointments because I figure the only reason I didn’t get a part was that something better is awaiting me. Unless there was a plan for me, God would not have let me quit my job at thirty-seven to become an actor where at any given time 95 percent of the union members are out of work. So I might be disappointed I didn’t get a part, but I’d think, Forget it. There must be something better up ahead. And there always was.”

Veteran stage actor and sitcom star John Mahoney passed away on February 4, 2018. For 11 years, he played Martin Crane, the irascible father of Frasier and Niles Crane on NBC's hit Cheers spin off, Frasier. It was a completely against-type role for the congenial British actor, who was once described by a neighbor as "a delight." The role also turned Mahoney into an instant star, which afforded him the luxury of pursuing his lifelong passion, theater. But he actually didn't set foot on a professional stage until he was almost 40. So what was he doing all those years before his Frasier fame, and how did the sitcom's success affect his life afterwards? This is the untold truth of John Mahoney.

32 Times John Mahoney Was The Best Part Of "Frasier" (https://www.buzzfeed.com/jamiejirak1/best-martin-crane-moments-in-honor-of-john-mahoney)
Frasier's success hinged on John Mahoney’s painfully real father-son dynamic with Kelsey Grammer (https://decider.com/2018/02/06/john-mahoney-frasier-best-tv-dad/)
“Frasier works because Mahoney works,” says Brett White in tribute to the late actor. “While Niles and Frasier serve two-peas-in-a-pod comedy, Martin Crane–a cantankerous and retired police detective with a bad hip and a delightfully dopey dog–is exactly the foil that the fussy and pompous Frasier needed. It’s the kind of foil he never got in his near decade-long run on Cheers, as no one in that bar was his dad. It’s this push and pull, the battle of wills between a full-grown son and his polar opposite dad, that pushed the show from brilliant farce to legit, gut-punching art.” ALSO: Mahoney shunned his fame. I just learned (https://www.datalounge.com/thread/32957440-actors-who-were-surprisingly-old-by-the-time-they-made-it-big) that John Mahoney (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mahoney#Early_work) didn't start acting (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001498/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) on the regular until he was already well into his 40s. He was 47 when cast in Moonstruck and 53 when Frasier started. Often cast older than his actual age, he was only 15 years older (https://www.reddit.com/r/Frasier/comments/s33kaf/john_mahoney_was_only_15_years_older_than_kelsey/) than his TV son Kelsey Grammer.
Sgt. Saunders 07-24-2023, 08:32 PM There’s a terrific interview with Mr. Mahoney on the set 8 dvds of the superb “Foyle’s War” series from England. Mr. Mahoney portrays a quintessentially “ugly American” on that wonderful show.
Mr. Mahoney was, obviously, a great actor, outstanding in both comedic and dramatic roles. And, he led such an interesting life, from his boyhood in Manchester, England to his life in
America as an American soldier, student, teacher and actor.
I read that Mr. Mahoney, who was a devout Roman Catholic, would always pray for God’s help in his performances and in his dealings with all the people he worked with and met during his life. Mr. Mahoney was both respected and beloved by his fellow actors on “Frasier” and by his cast mates in film and on stage.
What a talented, kind and decent man, he was.
Requiem aeternam, Mr. Mahoney.
