CHCH-TV in Hamilton is having great success with their new daytime retro lineup, which includes "Bewitched", "Batman", and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", and now get ready for a new addition starting next week. On Monday at 5 pm, they will be showing the last episode of "The Partridge Family" called "S.O.S". But, strangely enough, once that episode ends, they won't be going back to the first season and start over, which leaves me very sad. But instead, CHCH has put out their own S.O.S to come up with an excellent replacement!

On Tuesday, January 30, at 5:00 pm, get ready to say "Hey! Hey!" once again to "The Monkees". The series which inspired "The Partridge Family" is in the midst of its 50th anniversary on TV and I will be ready to celebrate it. So far, that is the only notable change that CHCH will make to their retro schedule. But, since "The Monkees" only ran for 2 seasons and 68 episodes and a few of the other series are close to the end of their runs, there could be further changes to come this summer. I'll let you know if and when it happens. For now, I just can't wait for Tuesday!

CHCH is airing some great "old" shows during the day and I see that this week they removed "The Americans" from their night time schedule and have started airing "Community" at 10pm. The pilot episode aired last night.

I've never seen "The Monkees" so I guess I'll have a look next Tuesday. Thanks for the info.

It's official! The Monkees are back on Canadian TV and I am very thrilled:

Looks like there will be another change on CHCH. According to zap-it listings, starting Wednesday March 28 The Bob Newhart Show and I Dream of Jeannie will no longer air at 10am and 10:30am and Charlie's Angels will be airing in that time slot.

ETA: IDOJ is off the CHCH schedule beginning Friday March 23

Yes, that is correct. Nice going!

Here is your proof:

Will the Partridge Family be coming back?

What is odd is that I believe Batman had the shortest original run among the CHCH shows. The PF was the first to be done showing their entire series and they are gone, but just recently Batman started again from the beginning.

Bewitched is on Year 4 of their 8 year run, while MTM is on Year 6 of their seven year run. Not sure how far along Newhart is.

I'm surprised that CHCH chose to remove The Partridge Family, IDOJ and The Bob Newhart Show but are keeping Batman. I was expecting all the shows that started airing in September 2017 to air until the end of August 2018.

Newhart just started on season 7 and it ran for 8 seasons.

I think the reason why Batman survived and the others didn't could be because it has become the most popular show among the retro shows on the schedule and certainly the most publicized. Otherwise I would have been very happy to see the Partridges and Jeannie come back and stay until September.

In keeping with this trend, the next shows to go should be Newhart (one season to go) and The Monkees, since it only ran for 2 seasons. Anyone care to guess what might be replacing them around the end of April? I honestly have no idea but I'm sure it will something good. I'll take a very wild guess and go with The Brady Bunch!

"The Brady Bunch" would be a good replacement, or "I Love Lucy," there really are endless possibilities. They could even go into the 80s or 90s.

Since they've decided to air and hour long Aaron Spelling "drama" I would be happy to see them add "Starsky and Hutch" to the lineup. As far as I know, that show hasn't aired on any station that broadcasts in Canada for nearly 20 years.

Here's a nice video from last summer for Batman fans as Burt Ward drops by the CHCH studio to promote the series:

CFTV had it on last year.

They've also been running Emergency, The Rookies, Man from U.N.C.L.E, The Saint, Remington Steel, The Avengers, Magnum PI, Streets of San Francisco, Courtship of Eddie's Father, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Underdog, Lancelot Chimp: Secret Agent, Hogan's Heroes, Leave it to Beaver, The Monkees, Six Million Dollar Man, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Fat Albert, The Rockford Files, MacGyver, Wings, I Dream of Jeannie, The Odd Couple , Taxi, Have Gun Will Travel, Dallas, The Andy Griffith Show, AstroBoy, The Munsters, The Partridge Family.

CFTV is a great station but I can't get it so I can't comment too much on it. I wish more stations would follow their lead but nobody will so it's their loss.

"Starsky and Hutch" does sound like a good show for CHCH to add and if they do they might put it on in the morning after "Charlie's Angels" which would give them 2 1 hour dramas for the morning and all sitcoms in the afternoon. What I was thinking for the morning slot would be a series that would work great with "Charlie's Angels" and would add another hour of "Girl Power" and that would be "Wonder Woman" with Lynda Carter. Now wouldn't that make for a great combination?

If you want to check out CHCH "on the go" you can try the live feed here. It won't always work, but when it does you're in for a real treat:

CFTV sounds like a great station. I've never heard of it and have no access to it, but I sure wish I did.

Lucky you, PanamaMike.

It's a low power, community station in Leamington (lots of Town Council meetings) which for some reason is carried by Bell.

Sal

CFTV is carried by Bell Canada on Bell Satellite on Channel 586, but not on Bell Fibe, which I have, and I don't understand why. It just might be Canada's best (and certainly smallest) classic TV station. It seems like just an ordinary cable access channel, like the type that was spoofed in "Wayne's World", with council meetings, mayor's speeches, supermarket openings, and other dull little municipal government details. They also must have one heck of a budget because the channel also carries such gems as "The Courtship Of Eddie's Father", "The Munsters", and even "H R Pufnstuf", shows that are rarely seen anywhere on both sides of the border. Thanks to Zap2it, here is what a typical weekly schedule looks like after eliminating all the boring stuff:

4:30 pm Courtship Of Eddie's Father (April 9), MASH (April 16)

5:00 Mork & Mindy

7:00 The Saint
8:00 Lost In Space

11:00 The Man From UNCLE

FRIDAY

4:00 pm Hogan's Heroes
4:30 Munsters

SATURDAY

8:30 Scooby Doo
9:00 Fat Albert
9:30 Rocky & Bullwinkle

I doubt you could find a channel anywhere that has that much variety with such a limited schedule. The best part is on Saturday mornings which are the way that Saturday mornings should be.

Your leaving out all the classic movies they show. They show a double feature of horror movies on Saturday nights and Abbott and costella movies on sundays to name a few.

Another change is coming to the CHCH afternoon lineup. Starting next Friday at 5:00 pm after the Monkees finish their run, CHCH will be bringing back Barney Miller, the classic cop comedy starring Hal Linden and Abe Vigoda. It kicks off a solid hour of workplace sitcoms, with Mary Tyler Moore following it at 5:30. Before that, nothing has changed. Batman and Bewitched will still kick off the "Retro Afternoon" beginning at 4. And that should be it as far as changes go until the fall season arrives for the afternoon group. In the mornings, Newhart is about to enter its final season and I'll let you know what will replace it sometime around May.

Sounds good. Thanks for the update.

I wonder if they'll replace MTM as well. The last season is airing right now.

I think the reason CHCH shows all these classic TV shows is to get viewers from other cities to watch their station. I'm not from Hamilton, and don't know if anyone on here is. They need to offer something different than we can get elsewhere to get a foothold in other markets.

Regardless of the reason, of course I am glad to be getting all these classic TV shows. Especially since I cancelled Comedy Gold, which we all know is not a classic TV station anymore.

I've never heard of CFTV. Is CHCH in Ontario only?

I don't think an hour drama will replace Newhart.

Alright, I'm not a Canadian, but I happen to know CFTV is a local station in Leamington that airs mainly city government programming for the Leamington area. It is the only Canadian station with digital subchannels. Its power is very low (.587 kilowatts) meaning its signal can't be received outside of Leamington.

CHCH only has transmitters in Ontario, but it is available online internationally.

Thanks.

I'm guessing the reason CFTV shows all these classic TV shows is to get more viewers to tune in, since who wants to watch city government programming all day?

You cancelled Comedy Gold at the right time. Right now, all they have on their schedule are endless repeats of "Everybody Hates Chris", "The Jim Gaffigan Show", "Comedy Bang Bang", and "Comedy Now", none of which are worth spending any extra money on for any reason. Now here's even worse news for you: Soon, the channel may no longer exist except in a very different form. Last year, it was announced that Comedy Gold was sold to a group called Wow! Entertainment which specializes in children's programming, which means that soon, maybe as soon as this fall, another once-beloved retro station will be gone to be replaced by another ordinary all-kids channel. I'll have more details on that later this summer when I discuss the Canadian upfronts (with the full dates to be posted today) and see what may come up in the near future. For now, let's be happy that we at least have CHCH to keep the retro shows going. Let's hope someone else steps up and gives us a little more because I believe Canadians deserve it!
