Jimmy Kimmel presided over a boring Oscar ceremony, but that was probably a good thing (https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/tv/a-boring-oscars-show-might-have-helped-soothe-hollywoods-year-of-being-fed-up/2018/03/05/898d2786-1fff-11e8-94da-ebf9d112159c_story.html)

"Boring Oscar shows aren’t the worst thing in the world," says Hank Stuever, adding that "a boring Oscar show is good for an industry trying to shuck off its past." Thanks to Kimmel, says Stuever, "the show has blessedly become more efficient — and thanks to a host such as Kimmel, less of an extravaganza of ego. It was only five years ago, after all, that host Seth MacFarlane opened — very badly, especially in hindsight — with a song called 'We Saw Your Boobs,' about actresses who have done on-screen nudity. In his second year, Kimmel has shown that the telecast needn’t be anything but sharp and sure, with a funny host whose bits are manageable, shareable and — best of all — forgotten. We’re not making showbiz history here; we’re just trying to get through another Oscar night."

Why ABC shouldn't be too worried about the worst-ever Oscar ratings (http://www.vulture.com/2018/03/2018-oscars-lowest-academy-awards-tv-ratings-ever.html)

Sure, the Oscar ratings freefall looks bad, particularly with early numbers predicting that viewership will fall below 30 million for the first time ever. But ABC should come out of this year's ceremony okay. "While ratings for Sunday night’s show will prompt a flurry of negative headlines, odds are they won’t make a huge difference to ABC’s bottom line," says Josef Adalian. "Consider: Even though the 2017 Academy Awards scored the second-smallest audience ever, the Alphabet network was able to charge about 10 percent more for ad time on this year’s show, according to reports in multiple TV-industry trades." As Adalian notes, ratings are down across television, so the lower Oscar ratings are part of a broad trend. "Why are advertisers paying more for fewer eyeballs?" asks Adalian. "Simple: With TV ratings down across the board — even the Super Bowl stumbled this year — it’s harder than ever to reach really big audiences all at once." He also points out that the Oscars are still a great way for ABC to promote its TV shows. "Even if only one or two of the new shows hyped last night get a boost from the Oscars advertising, it’ll be a big win for ABC," he says.

That is true...I didn't hear about the Best Pic Movies until January...plus...the Oscars haven't used older clips of movies or shorts for awhile...I wish they did that more often!
