I bought a set of vcr tapes that someone made of 9 seasons. Why are they saying there are only 4?

ALF only had 4 seasons. It aired from 1986 to 1990. Now there were some cartoon spin-offs. "ALF" the cartoon series and "ALF Tales"- maybe someone was considering those shows additional seasons?

ALF only ran 4. It's funny, one of the crew on Grey's Anatomy when I worked there a few years ago thought there were 6 when they were talking about how long the show ran and I was all "What?! No way!"

ALF ran 1986-1990 on NBC.

The most it would have gotten was one more season into 1990-1991.

Correct, producers were hoping for one more season. Depending on who you talked to, NBC had it unofficially on the 1990-1991 schedule in a first draft but then dropped it when they made their final version for the upfront. Alf, while great, was one of the sci-fi themes of the 1980s like Small Wonder that became to get stale towards the end of the decade. 227 also was under heavy consideration for the season as well but got tossed aside like Alf.

NBC to me was pretty much done once the early 1990s arrived. There were no more family shows. Each year they cancelled the last of them...

1985- Diff'rent Strokes (which went to ABC for one more season)
1987- Gimme A Break! and Silver Spoons
1988- Punky Brewster, The Facts Of Life
1989- Family Ties
1990- Alf and 227
1991- Amen
1992- The Golden Girls and The Cosby Show

Then we got Frasier when Cheers ended, and all these "Adult" sitcoms such as Friends and other shows like that. Family sitcoms were over at this point. It was sad.

1988- Punky Brewster.

NBC cancelled Punky Brewster in 1986. It aired for two more seasons in first run syndication after that.

NBC didn't cancel TGG. Bea Arthur made it the last year she would do the show, and everyone agreed to wrap it all up.
