View Full Version : The Apartment-same one all 6 years??
shocolah 05-19-2002, 12:52 AM I fell asleep last night when watching this one episode I've never seen before...Lucy wanted to move to another apartment in the building and Ricky kept telling her "no" and the Mertz's wanted 20 dollars more a month.
I could swear that there was a window in the living room in some of the shows (like when Lucy had to dress up as "Superman" for Little Ricky's B-day party) and in other ones, there was no window.
Does anyone know how that ep. ended? Did Lucy and Ricky move to the new apartment...? Or did they live in the same one all 6 years? Please help...this is driving me crazy! LOL !
(Sorry if this is a repeat post...I didn't see it anywhere on the first 3 pages.)
SoFl123 05-19-2002, 01:05 AM yes. they did move.

Thanks...I guess that explains the window in the living room.
Kristina 05-19-2002, 12:00 PM Yep they did move, I think I saw that window at Lucy: A Tribute in Universial Studios.
shocolah 05-19-2002, 09:05 PM Could anyone tell me how that ep. ended? Did the Mertz's still charge 20 dollars a month more, and was that new apartment right next door...if not, was it on another floor? Thanks!
dawsongirl 05-19-2002, 09:39 PM If you're talking about episode #61- it ended with the Mertzes and Lucy switching the furniture in their apartment with the Benson's furniture, as they decided to switch apartments. When they were done, the 3 went to get something to eat and at the same time, Ricky had hired some people to switch the furniture. So when they got back, the furniture was switched back.
SoFl123 05-19-2002, 10:26 PM ok we established what that episode was about so lets drop the subject.

No, you mean the furniture was "swished" back!

Why? People can talk about this episode as long as they want. It's completely on topic. If you're not interested, the solution for you is quite simple: Don't need to read or participate in this discussion.

Great--another Officer of the Message Board Police.
"Let's drop the subject"? That's laughable. I want to talk about it all week for that comment alone.

Mysty Eyes 05-20-2002, 04:24 PM Well, I want to talk about it.
I'm trying to remember...
Ethel told Lucy that the new apartment was $20 more. Lucy figured Ricky wouldn't like that.
Then wasn't it revealed somewhere in conversation that Fred was charging Ricky $20 more each month, because he was in show business? And Ethel countered with: "I've been giving it back to them each month."
But... the question at hand: What happened with the extra $20 for the new apartment? I don't remember.
As to the floor: I think it was on a different floor than their first apartment, but next to the Mertz's apartment? Hmmm...
Anyone know off-hand? I could possibly find out when I get home.
< But... the question at hand: What happened with the extra $20 for the new apartment? I don't remember >
They don't say anything about the $20/month more in rent for the new apartment, so we assume R & L began paying the extra. This goes along with Ricky's character-- every time he rants "We can't afford it!" they end up paying for it and apparently affording it rather easily. Other examples are the sofa and coffee table Lucy 'saved' for by making that silly dress and leaving her home permanent on for 5 hours, the Pontiac to drive to California, Lucy's 'Don Lopper' original dress, and the house in Connecticut.
As for the $10 more in rent Fred charges Ricky, that is when they think they are trapped in the Swiss Alps in that cabin and they are making "confessions." Like many eps in a series that ran for years, we are just supposed to ignore a lack of continuity in some details.
Mysty Eyes 05-20-2002, 09:26 PM Yep, you're right: $10 in the Alps episode.

I looked this up in a couple of books I have.
The "I Love Lucy" Book by Bart Andrews says that Lucy promised to pay the additional $20/month out of her household budget. But, we know how good she was at keeping to that.
The apartment number given in this book for the new place was 3-B. This changed later to 3-D for the "Lucy Tells the Truth" ep.
TV Sets - Fantasy Blueprints of Classic TV Homes by Mark Bennett gives the first apartment address as 623 East 68th Street, Apt. 4-A. The second apartment is 3-B (3-D).
Now...
In the 1st Season (Apt. 4-A), Lucy and Ricky try to break their lease by causing a lot of noise, etc. Fred and Ethel come walking in with plaster and a chandelier on their heads. The Ricardos therefore lived above the Mertzes, who would be on the 3rd floor.
When the Ricardos moved, they went to the 3rd floor. In at least one episode, they lived side by side: the episode where the washing machine was sold to the Mertzes, and it ended up falling off the landing between the two apartments.

There is NO rule on this board about how long a conversation can go on...therefore that comment was uncalled for.
shocolah 05-21-2002, 09:40 AM I'm surprised Fred and Ethyl's apartment looked so much different than the ones Ricky and Lucy had. I think the Mertz's had a much smaller one. Anyway, I like the bigger apartment better with the window.
Janice 05-21-2002, 10:31 AM Does anyone know how much the Ricardos paid for rent?
dawsongirl 05-21-2002, 02:07 PM Uh...$125? I thought I heard that somewhere.

I know. The Mertzes should at least have the same size or bigger apartment than the Ricardo's considering they were the landlords of the building.

I dunno. I live in an apartment building. When I first moved in the Landlord (since deceased) lived in the building as well. He used the least appealing unit: next to the alley, next to the laundry room, etc. He also never bothered to put up drapes.
He left the nicer and larger units available for rental to others, and spent his money making those units more attractive to tenants.

Yea, sounds right. we own a hotel and it's the same thing with us.

Not when the show mostly revolves around Lucy and Desi lol. It was just a sitcom, they made it bigger because they were the bigger stars and since it mostly focused on them the got the bigger set. lol
