JamesG 01-09-2018, 02:43 AM "The Goldbergs" 1990s-Set Spin-off Pilot To Air as Episode of ABC Series

January 8, 2018
Remember that 1990s-set spin-off from "The Goldbergs" that ABC ordered to pilot last year? It’s about to air this month.
The network said today that the pilot, which was not picked up to series, will air at 8 PM January 24 as a regular episode of the fifth-year comedy created by Adam F. Goldberg. He also was behind the untitled spin-off, which will be titled 'The Goldbergs-1990 Something' for its “special event” airing.
The episode picks up where the Goldberg family leaves off at William Penn Academy in the 1990s as former teacher and now Head of School John Glascott (Tim Meadows) leads a faculty with wildly different views on how to mentor students and recruits his tough-as-nails-sister Lucy (Nia Long) to join his staff and enroll her teenage daughters Felicia and Gigi (Rachel Crow, Summer Parker) as new students.
Lucy is desperate to ensure they avoid the social pitfalls of high school and finds herself torn between Glascott’s nurturing and communicative approach to parenting and Coach Mellor’s (Bryan Callen) tough-guy belief that physical competition brings out the best in students. Even Beverly Goldberg (Wendi McLendon-Covey) comes to visit the school’s staff despite all her kids already having graduated. But she can’t help but meddle one last time.

This is the only episode I haven't been excited for.
TV Guy 01-24-2018, 11:32 PM Wow - it really sucked. No wonder it didn’t get picked up.
IllinoisTVFan 01-25-2018, 12:33 AM It had its moments and could have been a modest hit, but nowhere near as popular as the Goldbergs. The Goldbergs works because they have the right chemistry.
ABC may want to reconsider The Goldbergs’ 1990s-set spinoff (http://deadline.com/2018/01/the-goldbergs-spinoff-ratings-top-night-911-american-housewife-amazing-race-fox-cbs-1202269026/)
Last night’s “The Goldbergs-1990 Something” episode was the highest-rated show of the night.
Jamey Greek 02-19-2018, 01:19 PM I hope they pick it up and ABC can do an I love the 90s block on Tuesday nights. With this, FOTB, Roseanne, and Coach. (The latter two the reboots of course.)
icecream 02-19-2018, 01:54 PM I hope they pick it up and ABC can do an I love the 90s block on Tuesday nights. With this, FOTB, Roseanne, and Coach. (The latter two the reboots of course.)A Coach revival would really be pointless now that Jerry Van Dyke is dead. Shelley Fabares did not want to come back either, no Luther and no Christine would make the new Coach a pale shadow of its former greatness. I would settle for classic Coach coming back to multiple stations in syndication at good timeslots.
'80sSitcoms 02-20-2018, 10:33 AM It has been way too long since a new episode of "The Goldbergs", so that disappointing '90s attempt makes me miss new episodes even more!
After watching the 90's purposed spin-off I changed my tune a little. I will say it had potential to be good. However I hated the kids it centered around. If they do it as Adam's life in college I could really get behind a 90's Goldbergs. We all know there's enough material for at least a full two seasons for a 90's Adam version of the show.

Part of the problem with why 1990-Something (http://forums.previously.tv/topic/65779-s05e00-the-goldbergs-1990-something/?tab=comments#comment-4044902) didn't work because it simply felt like a hollow cash-in. It's kind of like how when Fox rolled out That '80s Show to go along with That '70s Show. The thing with The Goldbergs is that it isn't just an '80s nostalgia-fest, it's a warm, romanticized account of the real Adam Goldberg's actual childhood. It's kind of hard to do that with a '90s based spin-off if there isn't a heart and center beyond the pop culture references.
Also, it's kind of redundant right now for ABC to have a '90s nostalgia sitcom when we already have Fresh Off the Boat. Even without the existence of Fresh Off the Boat, you need to have characters to make me care about. And I just have a sense that Coach Mellor and Mr. Glasscott are good as supporting characters/comic foils only.

Well, I would disagree about the redundancy. I mean between this, FOTB, and the Roseanne reboot, we could have a Tuesday 90s night with Rosenane back in its old time slot. Also Mellor and Glasscott could continue to make appearances on The Goldbergs. It would make sense since the show is set in the 80s.
Chocolate Moose 04-04-2018, 11:40 AM Too bad. Tim Meadows is very funny and talented.
ABC orders The Goldbergs' 1990s-set spinoff to series, starring AJ Michalka (http://tvline.com/2018/04/16/the-goldbergs-spinoff-1990s-series-order-aj-michalka-lainey/)
The actress will continue her role as Barry’s ex-girlfriend Lainey Lewis on the untitled spinoff. ABC originally passed on The Goldbergs spinoff last year, but the rejected pilot aired in January to great ratings (http://deadline.com/2018/01/the-goldbergs-spinoff-ratings-top-night-911-american-housewife-amazing-race-fox-cbs-1202269026/) and producers have retooled the idea for the show.
IllinoisTVFan 04-17-2018, 12:53 AM That could work. I think the gym teacher is very underrated.

Hope that Mellor and Glasscott continue to do Goldbergs as well.

The Goldbergs 1990s spinoff now has a title: Schooled (http://deadline.com/2018/05/the-goldbergs-series-gets-title-first-image-abc-adam-f-goldberg-1202389081/)
Tim Meadows, who spent nearly the entire 1990s (1991 to 2000) on Saturday Night Live will be joined by AJ Michalka and Bryan Callen on the 1990s-set comedy about the "hilarious teachers" of William Penn Academy.
JamesG 10-03-2018, 02:08 PM "Jane the Virgin's" Brett Dier to Co-Star in "The Goldbergs" Spin-off "Schooled"
by Rebecca Iannucci
October 3, 2018
Brett Dier is about to get "Schooled". The "Jane the Virgin" alum has been cast in ABC’s forthcoming "Goldbergs" spin-off in a series-regular role, our sister site Deadline reports.
Slated for a 2019 debut, the 1990s-set "Schooled" — which snagged a series order back in April — will star AJ Michalka in a continuation of her "Goldbergs" role of Lainey Lewis.
The series will take place at the fictional William Penn Academy, where Lainey is a teacher along with Principal Glascott (Tim Meadows) and Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen). Per the official description, the teachers are heroes to their students, “despite their eccentricities and crazy personal lives.”
Dier will co-star as C.B., an energetic teacher who engages his students with impressions and classroom antics. The character — who is based on series creator Adam F. Goldberg’s favorite real-life teacher — will serve as both a friend and rival to Lainey’s rookie educator.

ABC pairs The Goldbergs with spinoff Schooled, moves American Housewife to Tuesdays (https://deadline.com/2018/11/schooled-premiere-date-time-slot-the-goldbergs-spinoff-american-housewife-moves-tuesday-1202510456/)
The 1990s-set Schooled will take over American Housewife's Wednesday timeslot after The Goldbergs starting on Jan. 9. American Housewife will relocate to the Tuesday at 8 p.m. timeslot, taking over for The Conners, beginning Feb. 5. This will be the Katy Mixon-led family comedy's fourth timeslot.
IllinoisTVFan 11-28-2018, 04:40 PM They want it to start as a hit and I think it will.
Does this have any effect on Barry and Laney getting married?
I think that now is the right time to bring this up in light of the recent news (https://nypost.com/2021/12/16/jeff-garlin-fired-from-the-goldbergs-amid-misconduct-controversy/) about Jeff Garlin. But there was a "blind item" (https://www.crazydaysandnights.net/2019/04/blind-item-10_5.html) from about two years ago that was allegedly about AJ Michalka being given her own spin-off as Lainey to keep quiet about a sexual assault the may have happened while she was working on The Goldbergs.
And then, a much more recent "blind item" (https://www.crazydaysandnights.net/2021/12/blind-item-7_16.html) suggests that AJ wanted her role on The Goldbergs knocked down from a regular role to merely recurring status simply because she didn't want to be in the room with Jeff Garlin.
