John Ratzenberger Says "Cheers" Reboot Not Likely to Happen
by Marc Malkin

With "Full House", "Will & Grace", "Roseanne" and now a "Mad About You" update, it seems the golden age of TV is the golden age of reboots. But there's still one classic sitcom waiting to be drafted: "Cheers".

"I would love to see it, and I think the cast would, too," says John Ratzenberger, who played lovable mailman Cliff Clavin on the NBC series. "The audience is still there."

Sadly, Ratzenberger said, “I don’t think the producers want it. … I don’t think they want a bunch of geezers sitting at the bar.”

Well, Ted Danson gets work. It's not like we never see him.

I'd love a two or three part episode just catching up with everybody, with it just some random day at the bar, perhaps. By this point Norm could have a beer on a drip on his stool just to out the middle man.

I think it's very, very unlikely to happen though.

Cheers is a classic. Let it rest.

No one loves Cheers! more than me. I just re-watched the finale today , 25 years on, plus the Bob Costas pre-game show and the Tonight Show after-party. Cheers! is my hands down favourite show of all-time and half my life has gone by since it ended. But I wouldn't want a reboot. You can not recreate perfection. I am happier with eleven seasons of Cheers! on DVD than even 1 half-hour reboot could ever create. Don"t do it.

What I would love to see is Shelley Long and Ted Danson act again together in something, anything. Their chemistry was magic and I would pay to see it again. A comedy, a drama, a movie, anything. Get Shelley a guest spot on "The Good Place!" It's about time.

I could live with that, I love The Good Place. It's one of my favourite things at the moment.

I particularly loved seeing Ted Danson behind a bar in the season two finale.

I agree with that. I have awesome memories of Cheers that I still watch whenever I can. I wouldn't want to someday say "Cheers was awesome BUT..."

How about just a one-off cast reunion; would that be such a bad idea? I mean, they don't have to do anything else besides that. None of its cast members have died during the quarter century after Cheers ended.

That could work.

A show like Cheers would probably be hard to adapt today because of the fear from the PC police that a show set in a bar glorifies alcoholism (especially with the Norm and Cliff characters being looked at as nothing more than a couple of drunks always sitting around at a bar).

I would love to see maybe a one hour reunion special.

How about another spin off focusing on Fredrick Crane? Have an episode where the cast of Cheers and Frasier reunited.

Me too, but I'm not holding my breath.
