When did it get cut off the air?
When Did it start?
Does it have to do with anything with Vampires?
Can you answer those lol. I've never seen Dark Shadows but it was my Grandma's Favorite Soap besides The Young And The Restless.

It was about the Collins family of Collinsport, Maine. They lived in Collinwood, the family estate which had been built in 1795. (Pre-1795 they lived in the Old House, which is on the grounds of Collinwood). Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Portrayed by Joan Bennett) is the matriarch of the family, Carolyn Stoddard (Nancy Barrett) is her wild teen/early 20s daughter, Roger Collins (Louis Edmonds) is Elizabeth's brother who she is constantly arguing with, and David Collins (David Henesy) is the 10 year old son of Roger. In the first episode, Victoria Winters (Alexandra Moltke) comes to Collinwood to be the governess of David Collins. At first the show dealt with more soap-like things: The manslaughter case of Burke Devlin, who ended up in jail for five years for something he did not commit, and the origins of Victoria Winters, since she was an orphan and thought that clues to her past might be hidden there. The first supernatural thing to come was some ghosts, followed by Roger's estranged wife Laura who is a phoenix. In April of 1967, Barnabas Collins, a vampire, arrived. If you want to know anything about the show that happened between April of 1967 to April 1971, just post.

In episode #211 (April 1967), Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins was introduced. He is one of the most famous vampires ever to be on any screen. He was on the show until the end of it's run, but by mid-1968 he had been cured of his vampirism. The witch Angelique Bouchard Collins was for a while a vampire who kidnapped Victoria among other people. Other short term vampires, such as Tom Jennings, were on the show between 1968 until 1971.
Plata 05-23-2002, 05:56 PM I don't watch soap operas anymore, but I used to watch Young And The Restless back when I was 10.
LucyFan30 05-23-2002, 06:10 PM My favorite Soap Opera has to be Santa Barbara!! It was the best soap ever. I wish it was still on the air. My favorite couple on SB was Mason and Julia!! Now that SB is no longer on tv the only other soap I watch is General Hospital. Tracy
80sTrivia 05-23-2002, 11:23 PM I had to vote for The Young & the Restless. I've been watching this show since I was knee high to a grasshopper, as both my mother and grandmother were addicted to the show. And Nikki and Victor still can't get enough of each other, after all of these years!!!
17Mar59 06-12-2002, 09:38 PM Dark Shadows.
I think anyone who was a kid back in the 1960s would have to
vote for Dark Shadows as that was a really cool show.:)
Barnabas Collins was probably the second most famous and
recoginzable tv character after Mr. Spock.

I remember watching Dark Shadows when it went into syndication in the 80s. My mother told me that she used to rush home from middle school in the late-60s to watch the show and that all of her friends had to watch it as well. I enjoyed when they would travel back in time. I also liked to spot all of the mistakes that were made, as the show was filmed live as it aired! Lots of booms falling into view and stage hands coughing loudly in the background! :)
sweetflava 07-01-2002, 11:24 PM I love Y&R TO ITS THE BEST SOAP OPERA ON TV! I REALLY DILIKE THE NEW MACKENZINE I HOPE THE OLD ONE COMES BACK SOON. BUT I HEARD SHE LEFT BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO FINISH SCHOOL THE ACTING WAS TAKING UP TO MUCH OF HER TIME.
Christopher 07-02-2002, 10:07 AM Just a question, why wasn't Passions included in the poll? There was a time when Passions was great... only in the beginning. Anyways my favorite soap opera is All My Children. I love Kendall.

Hmm actually it wasn't taped live as it aired. The shows were taped usually two weeks in advance, but were rarely edited and unless a crew or cast member was seriously hurt (Broken bones etc) they would not stop unless the entire cast was laughing cause of a blooper. I think the show got it's first editing machine in 1967. In an interview Dan Curtis did, he said that he'd have to get another guy in the editing room and whenever they wanted to cut out a frame they'd have to push two buttons at the exact same time..if you didn't do it exactly at one time, it would edit out a frame. The budget for one episode was around $14000 I bleieve.
Brian 07-02-2002, 07:08 PM I don't watch soap operas but my mother watches One Life to Live, so I voted for that for her.
Tiger32 07-03-2002, 11:41 AM On the list I would have to say The Young & the Restless, but Generations was my favorite of all time, although it was a short lived Soap Opera.
Finnigan 07-07-2002, 08:56 PM It was not called City Limits, it was called The City, it had Morgan Fairchild in it. It was originally called Loving and they tried to retool it to improve ratings and avoid cancellation. Didn't work.
jerry allen 10-01-2002, 04:56 AM well, favorite soap of all-time is Guiding Light and why wasn't it mentioned on the poll? I have watched the show on and off since 1983 and I have seen most of the other soaps and none of them can beat GL. Not only does GL honor it's history but it also has family values. Mickey 05-27-2004, 08:25 AM Ideally a Days Of Our Lives/Sunset Beach amalgam. All the weirdness of both! :) Ben, Derek and Annie, possibly Greg, from SB, transplanted into DOOL. Forget the boring storylines, and just have general Stefano-style insanity! :)

You're half right. Loving had been canceled, and ABC wanted another soap. Instead of getting a new soap out-right, they took Loving and killed off half the characters, leaving only the younger and hippest characters. They were then transported from the fictional town of Cornith, Penn to the non-fictional town of So-Ho, New York. Tess (Catharine Hickland, now Lindsay, OLTL) became owner of a modeling agecny, Alley (Laura Wright, now Cassie, GL) started dating Private Investegator Tony, and tried to help solve crimes. The entire cast also moved into a hip looking apartment building (now the set of "The View"). The camera angles were changed from normal, tradional camera angles to funky and stylish ones (sideways, upsidedown, etc)...
Morgan Fairchild joined that cast as Sydne Chase, the owner of the building. Half-way through the shows run she left the series and Jane Elliot (Tracey, GH) joined the cast as Tracey. The story was that Tracey bought the building from old friend, Sydne.
The addition of Tracey to the cast facilitated to additon of Mob Boss Gino Soletio who she tricked into marriage, to inherit his fourtue. She faked the measels so she wouldn't have to consemate that marriage. He was shot and killed which left Tracey all his money. This enraged his daughter, i beleive her name was Gina?
Anyway The City just didn't work, the ratings never amounted to anything (i believe it was last place every single week it was on the air) and it never won a major Emmy or soap opera award. After a year and a half (give or take a few months) on the air, The City was canceled in 1997.
But it wasn't for nothing as The city did feature some ground-breaking storylines, including Daytime TV's first Transexual storyline. The story was that Model Azure who worked at Tess's agency had once been a man and had a sex-change operation. It was a ground breaking storyline and a daytime first. It pre-dated the coming out of AMC's Bianca by at least six years.
Friendsfan#555 06-06-2004, 08:28 PM My favorite is Guiding Light

Molson 02-26-2005, 01:27 AM I have stopped watching All my children years ago... I got really tired and still am getting tired of all the teenagers taking over these soaps......
My all time favorite was Another World.... I really wished they got rid of a few others and left that one alone......
As it is I tape Y&R and GH so I can watch it in the evenings so I can skip the boring parts and the commercials.... The problem with these writers is they have the actors always repeating everything.... It is very frustrating.......

What teenagers? Reggie and Dani? Wow, 2... and they're ever hardly on.
I see you like Y&R and GH. I find Y&R very boring (puts me to sleep) and GH is just awful -- with everything revolving around Sonny (who's played by an atrocious actor that mumbles and stutters over all his lines).
I’ve watched AMC since the late 70s, and I believe it’s in awesome shape right now.
Different Strokes for Different Folks :)

Yeah AMC hardly has any teenagers at all... I mean Bianca, Maggie, Babe, Jamie and JR are much older than teenagers. and anyways for a show called "All My Children" i find it hard to believe that anyone would expect that it wouldn't have children and teenagers. "AMC" is in very good shape right now, the best its been for sometime now... sure some things could be improved, but honestly its great right now. Its been on an upward swing ever since 2003. I do fear however that once Bianca and Maggie leave that the show won't have any stories left to tell... The Maria/Zack thing is boring as all heck, no one really cares about Ryan/Greenlee at all, Ethan/Kendall stink... and thats really all the stories they have right now. I've heard rumors that in the fall we'll see Rebecca Budig and Eva La Rue leave, but nothing has been confirmed yet. i wouldn't be surprised though. It would suck then, cause who would be left???? and with La Lucci not be written for right now i'd be hard pressed to find a leading male or female character on the show...
Molson 02-27-2005, 04:34 AM Well excuse me!!!!!! Back when I use to watch it everyone's kids were getting older then other young people started coming on and it got to be way too much... I am tired of everything always about the younger generation(not to say I am old but it gets really boreing)
And I have flipped through the channels when I am surfing and the sound and the sets now look weird......It is sooooo different now, I just don't like it......
But I will agree about the Sonny storyline all the freak'n time..... I wished that the writers would kill him off for good.....Big tough Sonny, noone can get hi...Huh!!!!!
And yes Y&R can be really slow to, but there is still a few people on there I like....So I tape all of my soaps so I can bypass all the boreing stuff and the commercials...... So I guess we could agree to disagree??

I think all soaps go through periods of time where they are slow. Though, for the most part, I don't see this happening on Y&R.

I also like Babe and Jamie.

Well there's very few teens on AMC now and the ones who are are actually very good actors with great storylines, AMC is the best it's been in a very long time IMO :)
Molson 04-06-2005, 04:25 AM Well I am finding now on Y&R... Mac, Lilly, Sierra, Davonne(who hasn't been there much) are on all the time and without much of an interesting storyline...and Cassie trying to fit in.... I think that Sierra and Davonne are not very good actors and if they are going to keep them on then they should hook up...But it also looks like Daniel and Lily might start something...But why can't they just hang as friends like they do...and this JT and his hidden love for Britney is getting old....
And GH my other soap, there is Georgie, Dillan, Deago and Brooklyn they are all boring too.....
I feel really bad for the little kids like Christina and Morgan...I mean how are they suppose to understand about real parents and pretend parents... all those shots of Christina sitting with Sonny or Alexis and saying mommy and daddy......doesn't that confuse them...Or do they wear some kind of ear plugs so they don't hear all that is being said???? I always wonder about that......there venting over..... JMO does anyone agree????
chelsealiz 04-08-2005, 07:37 PM Does anyone else watch Passions? I think that and General Hospitol rank as my favorite soaps! They are so good and their storylines keep you waiting for more! :)

shaeluv12 10-07-2006, 10:52 AM Days of our lifes is the greatest soap ever.
factsoflife 10-08-2006, 07:48 PM As of now my favorite soap opera is General Hospital, and OLTL is a close second, AMC is third...
But overall, i would say that most TV critics would agree that "Guiding Light" is the most influential and groundbreaking soap opera of all-time, espeically during the time that Irna Phillips was writing and producing it... With this show Irna created much of the framework of what would become soap opera staples, it was here that plots involving amnesia, coma's and evil twins were first introduced... It was here that Irna first used the idea of close-ups to convey a characters thoughts... I would also say that just the sheer number of years it's been on the air is enough to give it that title... but i would say most critics would also place As The World Turns, General Hospital, Another World, All My Children and Santa Barbara on the list of the best soap operas of all-time...
JO jr 10-09-2006, 01:45 AM MY FAV SOAP OF ALL TIME WAS ONE FROM THE 80'S-SANTA BARBARA. INCREDIBLE ACTING, MEMORABLE CHARACTERS AND GREAT PLOT-LINES. WISH I COULD GET THIS SERIES ON DVD!
ALSO, ANYONE REMEMBER PRISONER CELL BLOCK H? NOT YOUR TYPICAL SOAP, BUT IT SURE WAS GREAT.
LivinLaarge 10-16-2006, 06:55 PM I like AMC best. then GH and then OLTL. basiclly all the ones on ABC

factsoflife 10-23-2006, 11:08 PM General Hosdpital and wasnt there a soap called The City?
Yes, "The City" aired on ABC from 1996-1997. It was a retooled version of ABC's "Loving" which after years of struggling in the ratings needed an overhaul so in the summer 0f 1995 ABC proceeded to kill off half the characters on the show, mostly the older characters and shipped the remaining members of the cast (give or take a few) to New York City's SoHo district where Tess opened a modeling agency and Ally and Alec among others worked as Private Investigators... This new version of the show introduced Morgan Fairchild's character of Sydney to the show... the series never got good ratings and despite the presence of General Hospital's Jane Elliot (Tracey) the show was canceled in 1997. The set of the show can still be seen to this day as it is used by ABC's talk-show "The View"...
Yooch 10-23-2006, 11:28 PM Not a big soap opera fan, but I like The Bold and the Beautiful--mostly because I think Brooke Logan Forrester (Kelly Lang)--is very attractive.
Katya 11-07-2006, 05:27 PM Dark Shadow is my favorite I would trade almost any of the show on now to have DS back.

Actually her name is Katharine Kelly Lang. not Kelly Lang.
