Kiefer Sutherland was born 51 years ago today, the son of Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor Donald Sutherland and actress Shirley Douglas. He spent much of his youth in Canada with his mother, and made his screen debut in 1983 in Max Dugan Returns, which starred his father. He then starred in the Canadian film The Bay Boy, and made his Hollywood debut in the 1986 films At Close Range and Stand By Me.

By the end of the 1980s, Sutherland was starring in films like Young Guns and its sequel, Flatliners. But, although he continued to appear in prominent roles through the 1990s, in films like the 1993 version of The Three Musketeers (as Athos), A Few Good Men, and the John Grisham adaptation A Time to Kill, he never quite made it as a major film star. Where he really found his niche was on prime time television, as the star of one of the most iconic series of the 2000s.

Sutherland was nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series six times as Jack Bauer in 24, winning for the show’s fifth season; he also shared in the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for that season as a co-executive producer. He was a five-time Golden Globe nominee as well, winning for the first season. Sutherland currently has another starring role in prime time, as President Thomas Kirkman on ABC’s Designated Survivor, and this year had a supporting role in the remake of Flatliners.
