You wouldn't think that Magnum P.I. would become the nucleus of a shared universe, but that's exactly what eventuated. Even thought technically, Hawaii Five-O came first, it was only Magnum P.I. that started connecting the dots, so to speak. Magnum constantly referred to the Five-O, and although that didn't explicitly imply a direct connection between the two shows, at one point, Magnum did impersonate an officer and said "Billy, this is McGarrett of Five-O. Is David Norman armed?", McGarrett is of course, Steven J. "Steve" McGarrett, the lead actor of Hawaii Five-O. Magnum appeared on a couple of episodes of Simon & Simon, and then Simon appeared in an episode of Whiz Kids, and then the Whiz Kids appeared on
an episode of Simon & Simon. Magnum P.I. and Jessica Fletcher both appeared on each others shows, and the Law & Harry McGraw was a spin-off from Murder She Wrote.
Quantum Leap also figures into the Magnum P.I. shared universe, albeit, more tentatively. Magnum P.I. and Quantum Leap were both produced by Donald P. Bellisario. Donald had plans to have Sam Beckett leaping into the body of Thomas Magnum. Magnum P.I. cast members John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley and Larry Manetti were also slated to appear as well. Plans for a Magnum P.I. movie in the early 90s (which never materialized) led to the early demise of this episode plot, but some footage was filmed, namely the end-of-episode "juMagnum P.I.ng in" scene in which Beckett jumps into Magnum's body, turns to the camera, and raises his eyebrows the same way Tom Selleck made famous. In the Quantum Leap pilot,
Sam Beckett mentions that his sister is married to a man named Jim Bonnick, ostensibly the same Jim Bonnick from Magnum P.I. In one episode of Quantum Leap in season 1 episode 9, Sam actually mentions Thomas Magnum by name, lending credence to the notion that it was the same Jim Bonnick that Sam's sister was married to. There was also another TV movie made for Simon & Simon.
