Last season was a triumph for Saturday Night Live, but head writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider exited over the summer. Now SNL is returning Jost to a head writer position, which he abruptly stepped down from in 2015. “Replacing Kelly and Schneider with Jost and Che seems like a further pivot away from the writing that made last season of SNL feel so fresh,” says Joanna Robinson. “To distance oneself from a highly-acclaimed, award-winning tone is a baffling choice, but Lorne Michaels has proven us all wrong before.”

You'd think writing Update would take all their time.

not a big fan of Jost, Che is good but it seems like they would do better to have someone else do it that is not writing for update

I prefer it when it isn't all political all the time, and they really haven't been using the cast very well this season at all so far

che is not the worst idea in the world to try as head writer but jost was head writer for 3 seasons and was so so at best

The Writing has been terrible this season. Update has been pretty good but not great. The new cast just isnt working. Aside from Keenan (he makes terrible writing work) and Cecily Strong I would clean house. MAybe keep Mckinnon. I would suggest Miachels do something similar to what they did in 84 when they hired established stars MArtin SHort, Christopher Guest, Billy Crystal and Harry Shearer. Bring back Norm MAcdonald for Update now that Ohlmeyer is dead and Michaels pretty much runs NBC late night at this point. I would also suggest a season where every host is a former SNL Cast Member. Those are always the best episodes.
