Just watched the two part episode...David gets a job....season 2
I have a question. Did the actor leave the role or was he fired? I never cared for the actor or the character. I was glad when he left. I know he returned again in later seasons.

He was let go because they didn’t want Ann to have a boyfriend. But Richard Masur must have left on good terms, because he came back at the beginning of season 2 to tie up his character’s storyline, and again returned for a guest appearance five years later.

Incorrect.
Masur actually Asked to leave the series as he saw the character was being painted into a corner...Norman Lear actually wanted him to Stay and do MORE episodes than the four he did in Season Two - he liked Masur, (He worked with Lear on the short lived cult show "HOT L BALTIMORE" prior to ODAAT) and according to Masur eventually offered him a chance to work on the production side of another (unrealized) project years later.

He also was on Rhoda at that time. He played Nick Lobo , Brenda's boyfriend. :) Maybe another reason for him not doing ODAAT anymore was being he was on another show, didn't feel he needed to be on two, didn't need the extra work.;)

His role on "Rhoda" was reoccurring, and he only made 7 appearances between 1974 (predating ODAAT) and 1977. He only made TWO of those appearances AFTER he left ODAAT. He was available and they didn't expand his appearances (But then Brenda did have at least a couple of reoccurring Boyfriends by this point...)

I liked David much more than any other boyfriend Ann had, including her husband, Sam, and her ex, played by Joseph Campenella.
I was very sorry to see him leave.

I fully agree. Richard Masur and Bonnie Franklin were very good together in the show. Too bad Masur didn't stay on with it, but marrying Ann off too soon would have strayed away from the original concept of the series, a recently divorced woman trying to move on with life and raise her two daughters.
Joseph Campanella? Yuck, I don't like him either, he looked too old for Ann. :p
Howard Hesseman/Sam gets a yuck also, to me he seems like a sleazeball. :p
