Why would they already start repeating episodes?

With 24 episodes The Middle is bound to have repeats.
I think it was a smart move for ABC to be repeats tonight, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer always does well in the time slot and The Middle's ratings would have been hurt by it.
