PBS Cancels "Charlie Rose"
by Denise Petski
November 21, 2017

PBS has joined CBS News in ending its relationship with Charlie Rose. The public broadcaster announced it has cancelled distribution of his self-titled interview program "Charlie Rose".

“In light of yesterday’s revelations, PBS has terminated its relationship with Charlie Rose and cancelled distribution of his programs. PBS expects all the producers we work with to provide a workplace where people feel safe and are treated with dignity and respect,” PBS said.

"Charlie Rose" began airing in 1991.

The word from PBS comes on the heels of CBS News firing the veteran interviewer earlier today and his "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell expressing on-air their profound disappointment in the sexual harassment allegations against him.

The end to the 75-year-old Rose’s five-year run on "CBS This Morning" and as a "60 Minutes" correspondent, as well as his long relationship with PBS followed revelations on Monday of eight women accusing the host of “unwanted sexual advances toward them,” reported by the Washington Post.

Shortly afterward, CBS, along with PBS and Bloomberg, suspended Rose.

Charlie Rose is out on his ass. What a shame. Who's going to interrupt all those guests now?

Three female CBS News staffers came forward today accusing Charlie Rose of sexual misconduct (https://www.thedailybeast.com/three-cbs-news-employees-accuse-charlie-rose-of-sexual-misconduct)
“Two of the women who came forward at CBS say they are not ready for the details of their allegations to be made public,” CBS News correspondent Bianna Golodryga reported Tuesday night on CBS Evening News, which made Rose’s firing the No. 2 story (https://twitter.com/koblin/status/933117084091015172). “But a third woman alleges Rose whispered a sexual innuendo while touching her inappropriately at a work-related event.”

For years, Oliver’s HBO show highlighted Rose’s (https://www.tvtattle.com/topic/Charlie-Rose-eJfJzE) weird sexual banter on CBS This Morning (https://www.tvtattle.com/topic/CBS-This-Morning-yOf8dl) in recurring “And Now” segments. Last Week Tonight happens to film at CBS’ New York Studios, and Oliver would occasionally visit CBS This Morning to tease the co-hosts about their “sex talk.” As Amy B Wang reports, “It is unclear how or why Last Week Tonight came to put together and air these montages. Did Oliver — or any of the writers or producers on the satirical weekly news show — know about Rose’s alleged off-air behavior? Or was it a mere coincidence that they had highlighted the weird sexual vibe on the show in a recurring segment? HBO representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday morning.”

PBS was caught rather flat footed here. Rather than have a new 'temporary' host or even show a rerun, they reran the "Finding Your Roots" they had just aired hours earlier. I wonder if they'll attempt to have another late night news interview show with another host or will they simply keep using that hour to air reruns of other shows? What can I say but too bad for all of them that this happened and why would someone who seemed so intelligent and mannered oncamera behave in such a crude and vile manner offcamera (at least on PBS he was mannered).

Don't you think that they all knew this was going on and turned a blind eye to it? They're all out boo hooing for women's rights on their news shows but when someone makes them money they magically see nothing. Stop being suckered by the news/entertainment industry. They're total hypocrites.

In it, Bee reveals that Rose’s dark background contains a bunch of creepy, leering Charlie Roses — all played by Charlie Rose himself. Newsbusters also highlighted Bee’s appearance last year on Charlie Rose, where the “Charlie Rose Clones” bit was taped. As Newsbusters notes, Rose pointed out her show's title, Full Frontal, and said, “I love the idea.”

Rose’s (https://www.tvtattle.com/topic/Charlie-Rose-eJfJzE) exit hasn’t hurt his former CBS morning show’s ratings, and Today without Lauer has only thrived and beat the competition since his ouster. Which begs the question: Do viewers actually care who hosts their favorite morning news programs, or were they impressed by how Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell and Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb each handled the loss of their male co-anchor?

PBS Boss Explains Why They Fired Charlie Rose and Tavis Smiley
by Megan Vick
Jan. 16, 2018

Perhaps the TV network most affected by Hollywood's movement against sexual assault is PBS. The system of networks fired two marquee names — Charlie Rose and Tavis Smiley — when they were accused of sexual misconduct last year.

PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger explained to reporters Tuesday at the TCA winter TV previews how PBS came to those decisions and how it has changed in the wake of Rose's and Smiley's exits.

"As you know, the way that we're organized is that the production that comes to public broadcasting is all done by independent organizations, as was Rose's. It was an independent production company that was housed at Bloomberg," Kerger said.

"That's where he produced his program. He managed the program himself — all of the human resources — all of that came out of his own organization. We didn't have the kind of view into that organization and we learned of the issue with Charlie Rose the morning they actually wrote the story in The Washington Post."

In the meantime, world renowned reporter Christiane Amanpour is filling in for Rose while the network seeks a permanent replacement.

"I am particularly happy to have Christiane Amanpour, who I think is an amazing talent, and creating an opportunity to bring her to public television has been great," Kerger said.

"But look, Charlie Rose was on the air for 25 years, and I think we have a moment to really think very hard about what we want to do at 11 o'clock broadcasting, and so we're looking at a lot of different possibilities, of which Christiane may very well be a part."

The allegations against Smiley differed, however, because the complaint came directly to PBS, putting them in a position to investigate.

"Because we were contacted by someone [directly], we hired a law firm that has expertise in this area and they conducted the investigation. I'm sure many of you have seen what Smiley has spoken about in the press. The investigation included, quite frankly, an interview with him," Kerger explained.

"It was based on multiple allegations of inappropriate behavior, as well as his own words about what happened, that led us to the decision to suspend his program."

On a personnel level, PBS is re-enforcing their anti-sexual harassment policies and making sure their employees know of the multiple ways to report inappropriate or troubling behavior.

"Within PBS, we obviously have had for many years very clear policies not only around accepted behavior but also remedies. That is the most important, that people feel that if they are uncomfortable. You want to make sure that they understand how they can raise issues as they arise," Kerger said.

"Part of that is about having an HR department that is robust and equipped to deal with issues so they are not only responsive but proactive in looking across the organization and trying to anticipate issues. By the way, that also ties into good management and looking into ways that we can strengthen the organization so that people can bring the best work."

The organization also has a whistleblower hotline that employees can use for reporting. Sexual harassment training will now be required annually and managers have a mandated second level of training they must complete each year.

"We're going to require people to go through training every year, so that it's always fresh and people are just reminded what it is to be in a workplace where people are treated with respect, but also feel comfortable that they can build relationships," Kerger said.

"That's part of the challenge that we all face moving forward is how do we talk about it to one another?"

Charlie Rose described as "broken" and "desperately lonely" since his sexual harassment scandal (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/what-happened-charlie-rose-we-asked-his-friends-associates-1101333)
The Hollywood Reporter describes how Rose was completely ignored last week and had to keep his head down while visiting a popular New York City restaurant. "Dressed in a dark suit, Rose projected dishevelment: his hair messy, his notebook's pages askew, his gait shuffling," writes James Oliver Cury. A source says of Rose's current state: "He's a broken, powerful, old man surrounded by people who love him, but the truth is, he is desperately lonely." ALSO: The Hollywood Reporter criticized for giving Rose the "sob stories" treatment. Report: A Charlie Rose-hosted #MeToo redemption show is in the works (https://pagesix.com/2018/04/25/tina-brown-wants-no-part-of-charlie-roses-metoo-redemption-series/)

Journalist Tina Brown, the former editor of The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, tells Page Six she was recently approached to produce a #MeToo atonement series that would have the disgraced former CBS News and PBS host interview other men embroiled in sexual harassment scandals. Brown also mentioned the proposed show this week at a Women’s Luncheon in Brooklyn, with a source saying she told the audience she had rejected the proposal while mentioning potential guests like Matt Lauer and Louis CK. Brown tells Page Six's Ian Mohr, however, she "can't remember" who exactly is behind the series. Page Six adds: "Three guests at the Brooklyn lunch recalled Brown mentioning the Rose show was pitched to her as a 'Netflix show.' But a source familiar with the streaming service told us that it’s not at all a Netflix project, and no one there had heard of it." This news comes amid a recent spate of media articles exploring how high-profile men could stage their comebacks.

Charlie Rose's alleged sexual misconduct was widespread at CBS News; 27 new women come forward (https://www.washingtonpost.com/charlie-roses-misconduct-was-widespread-at-cbs-and-three-managers-were-warned-investigation-finds/2018/05/02/80613d24-3228-11e8-94fa-32d48460b955_story.html)

The Washington Post, which reported first reported on Rose's sexual harassment allegations at PBS last November, has learned that the former CBS This Morning (http://forums.previously.tv/topic/3681-the-hosts-john-gayle-norah-and-whoevers-filling-in/?page=3) co-anchor and 60 Minutes correspondent also allegedly sexually harassed many female staffers at CBS News. CBS News managers received complaints about Rose's behavior as early as 1986 and as late as April 2017. The Post spoke to 14 CBS News employees who accuse Rose of sexual harassment and 13 women who worked with him elsewhere. The new allegations date back to 1976, when a former research assistant at NBC News' Washington bureau says Rose exposed his penis to her and touched her breasts. Meanwhile, at CBS News, "some women who said they were harassed said they feared reporting the violations to executives, whom they viewed as prioritizing the careers of male stars," report Amy Brittain and Irin Carmon, who broke the first Charlie Rose story. In all, three CBS managers were warned over a 30-year period of Rose's behavior (https://www.datalounge.com/thread/20065384-charlie-rose-an-unmitigated-*********-who-tried-to-get-a-woman-writing-a-profile-on-him-in-trouble-with-boss-anna-wintour-). When asked to respond to the new allegations, Rose sent a one-sentence email: “Your story is unfair and inaccurate.” CBS News issued a statement in response to The Post's article: “Since we terminated Charlie Rose, we’ve worked to strengthen existing systems to ensure a safe environment where everyone can do their best work. Some of the actions we have taken have been reported publicly, some have not. We offer employees discretion and fairness, and we take swift action when we learn of unacceptable behavior. That said, we cannot corroborate or confirm many of the situations described. We continue to look for ways to improve our workplace and this period of reflection and action has been important to all of us. We are not done with this process.” ALSO: Gayle King responds on CBS This Morning (https://twitter.com/CBSThisMorning/status/992017729245843458): "I have a very bad case of deja vu, I have to say. I feel sick to my stomach. I don't know what to say about this."

A Charlie Rose #MeToo redemption show sounds absurd, but don't be shocked if it ever does happen (https://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/2018/05/03/think-that-charlie-rose-pitch-absurd-then-you-haven-been-watching/uHnvgwHZDa85epW5yViRtK/story.html)
The overwhelming response to last week's Page Six story (https://pagesix.com/2018/04/25/tina-brown-wants-no-part-of-charlie-roses-metoo-redemption-series/) is that "this would NEVER, EVER happen," says Matthew Gilbert. But he says in an era where O.J. Simpson's If I Did It is a possibility, anything can happen. "I can just see some producer putting together a low-budget affair starring Rose and streaming it through Rose’s website, perhaps, or a site with a less obvious stigma," says Gilbert. "I can see people watching it, especially those who find the #MeToo movement to be an expression of liberal political correctness, those who feel that women shouldn’t be so sensitive and difficult. I can see the show developing a loyal following, just as off-kilter sites such as Alex Jones’s InfoWars have. It’s hard to believe Charlie Rose’s Bathrobe Confessions would ever come into existence. But I remember the disbelief I felt in the late 1990s, when I first heard about an upcoming TV series where — oh my God — they actually leave a group of people in the wild to see if they can survive." CBS and Charlie Rose sued by three former staffers for sexual harassment (http://www.tmz.com/2018/05/04/charlie-rose-lawsuit-sexual-harassment-women-cbs-this-morning/)

Former CBS News broadcast associate Katherine Brooks Harris, ex-news associate Yuqing "Chelsea" Wei and Rose's former executive assistant Sydney McNeal -- who were all cited in Thursday's Washington Post story on Rose (https://www.washingtonpost.com/charlie-roses-misconduct-was-widespread-at-cbs-and-three-managers-were-warned-investigation-finds/2018/05/02/80613d24-3228-11e8-94fa-32d48460b955_story.html) -- have filed a lawsuit (http://variety.com/2018/biz/news/charlie-rose-lawsuit-three-accusers-1202798839/) against CBS News and the disgraced former CBS This Morning anchor. All three women allege that Rose berated and intimidated them, boasted about his sexual conquests and encouraged them to share their sexual experiences, according to TMZ. They all say that Rose would repeatedly caress and touch their bodies. Wei said Rose would refer to her as "China Doll" and that he once called her a "f*cking idiot." Harris and McNeal say Rose fired them after The Washington Post's bombshell story (https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/eight-women-say-charlie-rose-sexually-harassed-them--with-nudity-groping-and-lewd-calls/2017/11/20/9b168de8-caec-11e7-8321-481fd63f174d_story.html) last November that resulted in his firing.
