Melissa Gilbert Accuses Oliver Stone Of Sexual Harassment: “It Was Humiliating And Horrid”

During an interview on Andy Cohen’s satellite radio show Radio Andy, actress Melissa Gilbert claimed that director Oliver Stone sexually harassed her during an audition for his 1991 film The Doors.

At first, Gilbert told her story without naming any names. She kept the accusations very anonymous saying that she was humiliated during an audition because she had “embarrassed him in a social situation.” Gilbert ended up running out of the room crying.

“I’m actually sitting here telling you this story, afraid to say his name, because I’m worried about backlash,” she said in the interview. After being reluctant she eventually said, “Oh f*** it! It was Oliver Stone, and it was The Doors.”

Gilbert says the role she was auditioning for was the Meg Ryan’s character. She goes into detail about the scene she had him read — a scene he said he wrote especially for her. The scene had her on her hands and knees saying, “Do me, baby.” Gilbert said that Stone asked her to stage it and she refused and left the audition crying.

“I never really talked about it — and it was all because I had said something and embarrassed him publicly,” she said. “He wrote this special scene that he wanted me to do for him physically in the casting room, and it was humiliating and horrid.” She adds, “He got me back and it hurt.”

Gilbert’s accusation against Stone is not the first. Former Playboy model Carrie Stevens claimed that the director groped her during a party. Stone has yet to respond these allegations.

This news comes after Stone backpedaled on his comment about Harvey Weinstein saying that ““It’s not easy what he’s going through” in regards to the scandal. It also comes after he said that he would “recuse” himself from Showtime’s upcoming series Guantanamo “as long as the Weinstein Company is involved.”

Oliver Stone has responded to claims made by Melissa Gilbert that the Oscar-winning filmmaker sexually harassed her during an audition for The Doors.

“We auditioned dozens of actors for roles in The Doors and it was made clear from the outset that our film was going to be a raunchy, no-holds-barred rock ‘n’ roll movie,” Stone said in a statement to THR.

“Anyone auditioning was told the scenes would be rehearsed and performed from a script, with my casting director, Risa Bramon Garcia, present throughout the process to ensure a safe environment for all actors who auditioned.”

Garcia echoed these sentiments in her own statement, saying:

“Every actor who auditioned came in voluntarily and was aware of the provocative material prior to engaging in their scenes. No actor was forced or expected to do anything that might have been uncomfortable, and most actors embraced the challenge, recognizing Oliver Stone’s vision and the creative process.

In my experience, there was no attempt to personally offend any particular actor. I always have and still do go out of my way to create a safe and creative space for actors in the audition room. It was no different on The Doors.”

I obviously don't know who's telling the truth here but movie/TV geared for adults are a different animal. You shoot sex scenes where people are naked and there's an entire crew around. Plus, you have people audition for those scenes. And when you audition for those scenes people are often naked for very good reasons. Number one, you have to see what they look like because they're going to be naked in your movie. Not much good having a NY Yankee tattoo on your back if you're in Game of Thrones. And number two, you have to make sure they have the guts to do it. There's a lot of money on the line and having someone crying all day in their dressing room because they can't go through with it while you're paying 75 people to do nothing is not the best way to make a movie.

Between Miss Gilbert's claims re Mr. Stone and that other performer's claims re Mr. Kilmer, that movie sounds as though it may have been a bit of a nightmare take part of. I wonder if Miss Ryan will open up to whether she herself wound up being harassed on that set.

P.S. Though I'm sympathetic towards Miss Gilbert and lean towards believing her account, I wonder if she's ever expressed regret over having agreed with Whoopi Goldberg during her "The View" guest spot in which Miss Goldberg said that what Roman Polanski had fled the US to avoid prosecution for was NOT 'rape-rape'.
