I have heard a lot of people say MTV hasn't been good since they stopped showing music videos. From this article it sounds like MTV was not good when they were showing them either, 1987 has to be near the start of the channel (don't know the exact year, but cable didn't really start until the 80s). There are a lot of bad remakes I have heard about. I did not know about this one until tonight, but sounds like it takes the cake.

It wasn’t on MTV; it was syndicated. It was inspired by the success of MTV’s reruns of the original series. But it was put into syndication as a companion to “The New Gidget”, which had entered syndication the year before.

And yep - it was such a bomb that they actually cancelled it in midseason, very unusual for a syndicated series. And it deserved to be cancelled - it was nonsensical.

The mid-late 80s had a new fad of digging up and remaking dead shows like "The New ____" or "____, The Next Generation" or "____ Today". Only Star Trek and the Munsters managed to make more than a season and with Trek it was an utter miracle...

The worst part is, listening to the songs on their own merit, the new band's musicians are pretty rock solid - pardon the pun. The TV show, regardless of what name it would have had, is outright stupid and unwatchable. But the music was well above average for the often tinny-sounding late-80s.
