Stana Katic's "Absentia" Thriller Finally Finds U.S. Home on Amazon
by Ryan Schwartz
November 15, 2017

"Castle" star Stana Katic’s follow-up has finally found a U.S. home. Amazon has acquired the rights to "Absentia", the streamer announced on Wednesday.

The 10-episode thriller is slated to premiere sometime in 2018.

Created by Gaia Violo and Matt Cirulnick, "Absentia" centers on Emily Byrne (Katic), an FBI agent who, while hunting one of Boston’s most notorious serial killers, disappears without a trace and is declared dead.

Six years later, Emily is found in a cabin in the woods, barely alive and with no memory of the years she was missing. Returning home to learn her husband (Patrick Heusinger) has remarried and her son (Patrick McCauley) is being raised by another woman (Cara Theobold), she soon finds herself implicated in a new series of murders.

The series’ ensemble cast also includes Angel Bonanni, Richard Brake, Neil Jackson, Ralph Ineson, Paul Freeman, and Bruno Bichir.

“Absentia is an exciting new thriller which combines family and love with suspense and vindication,” Brad Beale, VP of Worldwide TV Content Acquisition at Amazon Prime Video, said in a statement.

“Prime members worldwide are going to love this well written show with remarkable performances by a terrific ensemble cast led by Stana Katic in her newest lead role.”

"Absentia" Taps New Showrunner, Eyes Season 2 Renewal
by Nellie Andreeva
March 12, 2018

"Absentia" has tapped a new showrunner, Samantha Corbin-Miller (ABC’s Conviction) as the Sony Pictures Television Networks’ crime thriller drama is plotting a second season, sources said.

No one is commenting but I hear that "Absentia" is in the process of being renewed by Amazon Prime Video, which is the series’ exclusive U.S. home and also carries it in several international markets, including the U.K., Australia, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Austria, Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, and Turkey.

According to sources, "Absentia" may be getting a multi-season renewal for seasons 2 and 3.

"Absentia" Renewed
by Vlada Gelman
June 19, 2018

Stana Katic’s TV comeback will continue: TVLine has confirmed that the former "Castle" star’s new drama "Absentia" has been renewed for a second season, as was quietly revealed earlier this month at the Corus Upfronts in Canada.

The sophomore run will reportedly again consist of 10 hour-long episodes. An Amazon rep did not immediately respond to TVLine’s inquiry about whether the streaming service will again host the series in the U.S. (as it did this past February).

Watch episodes 1 & 2 and it was enough for me! Did not like the plot and storyline was continuous. Not an episode based series.

Amazon to Stream "Absentia" Season 2 in U.S., Story and Cast Details Revealed
by Matt Webb Mitovich
Sept. 13, 2018

Amazon announced on Thursday that it will again serve as the Stateside home for the Stana Katic-led thriller "Absentia", which was previously renewed for Season 2 back in June and is currently in production in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The series, which is also executive-produced by Katic, centers on FBI agent Emily Byrne, who in Season 1 returned to the living after being declared dead while hunting one of Boston’s most notorious serial killers.

In the 10-episode Season 2, having tracked down and killed her abductor, Emily struggles for a tenuous new normal with son Flynn and ex-husband Nick (Patrick Heusinger). Alas, her obsessive investigation into the questions that haunt her uncovers a serial killer and a spiraling conspiracy that threatens more than just her family.

New cast members for Season 2 include Matthew Le Nevez (Australia’s Offspring) as Cal Isaac, a rugged ex-Navy SEAL who is all too familiar with the demons that chase Emily (and thus proves to be a loyal and sympathetic counterpart, hmmm), and Natasha Little (The Night Manager) as Julianne Gunnarsen, an accomplished FBI profiler who joins the ranks of the Boston Field Office after a deadly terrorist attack rocks the city.

Season 2 will premiere sometime in 2019.

Watch an episode in Season 3 and at last Katic character is going on the offensive instead of always being terrorized and running scared.

"Absentia" to End with Season 3 at Amazon — Read Stana Katic's Farewell
by Rebecca Iannucci
May 7, 2021

"Absentia" will indeed be absent from Amazon Prime’s lineup moving forward: The Stana Katic drama series is ending with its previously released third season.

Katic broke the news herself in a tweet on Friday, explaining that “although we’ve danced with the idea of continuing the tale, Absentia was always meant to be only three seasons, and I couldn’t think of a better note to end on… for any person on this planet, but especially [Katic’s character] Emily and her loved ones.”
