“We’re in a unique position of being this one show that really appeals to everyone regardless of your political beliefs,” says Sher. “I think it would’ve been good, at least in a subtle way, to hint at some kind of political change. A way to make some kind of statement of, ‘We don’t think this. We don’t think that.’ A simple way to get through to people.” But she adds that The Middle “exists in its own world and you can’t look at it as a reflection on the actual issues that are happening…I have to accept that The Middle is a different beast.”

It's a good idea for right now, but it dates the show. In years to come, it won't be as amusing.

why - there is enough politics on TV as it is, who needs it and why risk alienating half your viewers with every political joke.

One of the reason people like The Middle is no politics.

The only two shows I think handled politics well was All in the Family and Family Ties.

I am glad Eden is not a producer, politics are such a turn-off most places.

I liked that episode where Axl supported that candidate because his name was Harry Butts. That was so like him! He said that if a guy with that name could be brave enough to run for office, he must be worth something! Those weren't his exact words, but it was something like that.
