Does it get any weirder than the exit of Petticoat Junction’s Kate Bradley? She was played by a stand-in during her last appearance on the show, shot only from behind or from a distance, with a voiceover from the original actress. And then she was never seen or mentioned again.

I suppose the exit of Chico from Chico & the Man is bizarre as well. At first, Chico is said to have left to go into business with his father. Months later, Ed has a breakdown of sorts when his young ward finds Chico’s old van in the garage, and it turns out that Ed deluded himself into thinking Chico had left voluntarily, when in reality he had died, but Ed couldn’t face it.

How about The Torkelsons who never were ? Millicent has five children - Dorothy Jane (14), Steven Floyd (12), Ruth Ann (10), Chuckie Lee (8) and Mary Sue (6) in 1991 and 1992. Under a new title, Almost Home, in 1993...she has three. Steven Floyd and Ruth Ann [cue dramatic music] never existed.
