What’s bizarre, says Alan Sepinwall, is that the Star Trek-inspired series employs many Trek veterans, yet it just feels out of place. The Orville, he says, is “an hour-long drama that basically is 1990s Star Trek — or, rather, a mediocre facsimile of that era’s lamest Trek components, and with MacFarlane (who also created the series) as the lead instead of Patrick Stewart.” PLUS: MacFarlane’s acting ability (http://variety.com/2017/tv/reviews/orville-review-seth-macfarlane-star-trek-fox-1202544522/) isn’t up to snuff for an hourlong drama, it’s the first real stinker (https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/tv/seth-macfarlanes-the-orville-sets-off-for-a-humorless-and-lifeless-void/2017/09/07/83220c24-93e4-11e7-8754-d478688d23b4_story.html) of the season, and it’s an hour-long show for no real reason (https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/9/8/16267782/the-orville-seth-macfarlane-review-lol-what).
